Female seminaries in nineteenth-century America offered middle-class women the rare privilege of training in music and the liberal arts. A music background in particular provided the foundation for a teaching career, one of the few paths open to women. Jewel A. Smith opens the doors of four female seminaries, revealing a milieu where rigorous training focused on music as an artistic pursuit rather than a social skill. Drawing on previously untapped archives, Smith charts women's musical experiences and training as well as the curricula and instruction available to them, the repertoire they mastered, and the philosophies undergirding their education. She also examines the complex tensions between the ideals of a young democracy and a deeply gendered system of education and professional advancement. An in-depth study of female seminaries as major institutions of learning, Transforming Women's Education illuminates how musical training added to women's lives and how their artistic acumen contributed to American society.

Описание: Leadership for World-Class Universities reveals how "world-class" thinking and policy can help university leaders employ modern solutions to the challenges facing higher education today.
Описание: This book proposes the new concept of “comprehensive global competence” in order to explore how to advocate, cultivate, and implement global competence at China’s higher education institutions. The concept essentially refers to an organizational, cross-cultural capacity involving students, faculty members, administrators, and staff in a multidimensional learning domain that values, shapes, and promotes global competitiveness at higher education institutions.Unlike the other literature available, which has largely approached defining global competence it from four perspectives: an adaptation–change mode, an input–output mode, a willingness–tolerance mode, and a learning–competence mode, this book draws on the theoretical framework put forward in “Dimensions of Learning” (Marzano, 1992) in order to explain the meaning, implications, and justification of the concept of comprehensive global competence. Specifically, Marzano’s Dimensions of Learning Model offers a comprehensive research-oriented framework on learning cognition and the learning process. With the help of this resource, the book discusses in detail the conceptual, practical, and strategic aspects of creating comprehensive global competence.
Описание: The book also investigates the improvement of China`s education, and the higher education needs to "face modernization, face the world, face the future". It offers a broader vision to connect with the Chinese higher education system and the international higher education communities contextually.

Описание: Governments are becoming increasingly aware of the important contribution that high performance universities make to competitiveness and economic growth. This book explores what are the challenges involved in setting up globally competitive universities, also called `elite`, or `flagship` universities.
In 2015, the New York Times reported, "The bright children of janitors and nail salon workers, bus drivers and fast-food cooks may not have grown up with the edifying vacations, museum excursions, daily doses of NPR and prep schools that groom Ivy applicants, but they are coveted candidates for elite campuses." What happens to academically talented but economically challenged "first-gen" students when they arrive on campus? Class markers aren’t always visible from a distance, but socioeconomic differences permeate campus life—and the inner experiences of students—in real and sometimes unexpected ways. In Class and Campus Life, Elizabeth M. Lee shows how class differences are enacted and negotiated by students, faculty, and administrators at an elite liberal arts college for women located in the Northeast.
Using material from two years of fieldwork and more than 140 interviews with students, faculty, administrators, and alumnae at the pseudonymous Linden College, Lee adds depth to our understanding of inequality in higher education. An essential part of her analysis is to illuminate the ways in which the students’ and the college’s practices interact, rather than evaluating them separately, as seemingly unrelated spheres. She also analyzes underlying moral judgments brought to light through cultural connotations of merit, hard work by individuals, and making it on your own that permeate American higher education. Using students’ own descriptions and understandings of their experiences to illustrate the complexity of these issues, Lee shows how the lived experience of socioeconomic difference is often defined in moral, as well as economic, terms, and that tensions, often unspoken, undermine students’ senses of belonging.
