Описание: This book is an innovative sociolinguistic study of New Australia, an Australian immigrant community in Paraguay in 1893, whose descendants today speak Guarani. Providing fresh data on a previously under-researched community who are an extremely rare case of language shifting from English heritage language to a local indigenous language, the case study is situated within the wider context of the colonial and post-colonial spread of English in Latin America over the past century. Описание: Hubo un periodo en el que el Paraguay fue referido como el pais con mayor bilinguismo en Latinoamerica. Hoy dia se lo considera un pais donde se habla mayormente el jopara, termino con el que se alude a un tipo de mezcla de las dos lenguas mayoritarias, el guarani y el espanol. ?En que contexto y con que proposito surge esta denominacion? ?Que es el jopara desde el punto de vista linguistico? ?Por que se suele focalizar la descripcion linguistica en el jopara y ya no en el guarani? ?Acaso ya no se habla el guarani? A partir de estas interrogantes se analizan diferentes aristas del problema, apuntando principalmente a dos objetivos. Por un lado, ofrecer una vision de conjunto de la investigacion sobre el jopara y de los enfoques teoricos existentes. Por el otro, explorar las implicaciones e inferencias sociolinguisticas del analisis netamente linguistico o estructural, que se basa fundamentalmente en textos escritos o transliterados, y descontextualizados. Si no se analizan practicas de lenguaje en relacion con la competencia de hablantes bilingues y monolingues en guarani, en el caso de que aun existan, ?como saber donde ‘termina’ el guarani y donde ‘empieza’ el castellano.
