The modelling of the process of Neolithization - one of the basic tasks of the FEPRE project - requires the building of a complete data base, including radio carbon dates and inventory of FTN sites: both those excavated as well as those recorded in the course of surface surveys. In view of the fact that in the Neolithization of Europe the axis running from the Balkans to the Carpathians is of essential importance the editors have decided to compile the inventory of FTN sites along this axis and subdividedinto: I - Bulgaria, II - Romania, III - Eastern Hungary, IV - Eastern Slovakia, V - South-Eastern Poland. The result is a five-volume catalogue of FTN sites: Vol. I - Bulgaria - sites of the Monochrome and the Early Painted Pottery Phase (Karanovo I type); Vol. II - Romania (Transylvania and Banat) - sites of the Early Phase (with white-painted pottery); Vol. III - Eastern Hungary (Tisza basin) - sites of the K r s-Star evo Cul ture; Vol. IV - Eastern Slovakia - sites of the Early Phase of the Eastern Linear Pottery Culture; Vol. V - South-Eastern Poland - LBK sites. The database and analysis of archaeological records provide the most up-to-date groundwork for the construction of the model on Neolithization of Central Europe within the frame work of the FEPRE project.

This book summarizes the systematic research on the Neolithic cultures of Taiwan, based on the latest archaeological discoveries, and focusing on the maritime interactions between mainland southeast China, Taiwan, and southeast Asia during (5600-1800 BP). The study demonstrates and sheds light on the distinctiveness of Taiwan’s Neolithic cultures, their interactions with the external cultures of its surrounding regions, the maritime cultural diffusion and early seafaring across sea regions like the Taiwan Strait, Bashi channel and South China Sea.
Drawing on the author’s deep understanding of Taiwan and its surrounding regions, the book also incorporates recent archeological findings by Taiwanese researchers. Further, based on a new reconstruction of the spatiotemporal framework of Taiwanese prehistoric cultures, the chronologically arranged chapters discuss Neolithic cultures of the early, middle, late and final stage of this island region, revealing the prehistoric cultural development, regional typology and their maritime interactions with surrounding regions. M htelek lies in the easternmost corner of County Szabolcs-Szatm r (Carpathians, eastern Hungary). The importance of this archaeological site is manifold. The finds from the 1973 excavation and the fresh archaeological information provided by the site confirmed earlier speculations that the broader region had been part of the Early Neolithic world. The finds enabled the separation of the M htelek group, a variant of the K r s culture of the Alf ld (the Hungarian Plain), as well as the precise cultural and chronological attribution of several assemblages of stray finds, which had earlier simply been classified as Neolithic, to the M htelek group of the Alf ld K r s culture. Assemblages related to or identical with the finds from M htelek came to light in the north-easterly region of the Alf ld (principally in County Szabolcs-Szatm r-Bereg) and in the neighbouring regions of Romania and the Ukraine. Although the number of known sites is low, the currently known fourteen sites outline the boundaries of the group's distribution. The number of sites will undoubtedly increase in the future. Owing to various technical and other reasons, many decades have elapsed between the site's excavation and the publication of the final report on the M htelek site and its finds. No more than a few preliminary and incomplete reports have been published to date, some of them leading to misunderstandings and erroneous conclusions. The time is more than ripe for the publication of this report.
