Описание:
In the late 2000s climate action became a defining feature of the international political agenda. Evidence of global warming and accelerating greenhouse gas emissions created a new sense of urgency and, despite consensus on the need for action, the growing failure of international climate policy engendered new political space for social movements. By 2007 a 'climate justice' movement was surfacing and developing a strong critique of existing official climate policies and engaging in new forms of direct action to assert the need for reduced extraction and burning of fossil fuels.
Climate Action Upsurge offers an insight into this important period in climate movement politics, drawing on the perspectives of activists who were directly engaged in the mobilisation process. Through the interpretation of these perspectives the book illustrates important lessons for the climate movement today. In developing its examination of the climate action upsurge, the book focuses on individual activists involved in direct action 'Climate Camps' in Australia, while drawing comparisons and highlighting links with climate campaigns in other locales.
The book should be of interest to scholars and researchers in climate change, environmental sociology, politics, policy and activism.

Описание:
The failure of recent international negotiations to progress global action on climate change has shifted attention to the emergence of grassroots sustainability initiatives. These civil society networks display the potential to implement social innovation and change processes from the 'bottom up'. Recent scholarship has sought to theorise grassroots community-based low carbon practices in terms of their sustainability transition potential. However there are few empirical examples that demonstrate the factors for success of community-based social innovations in achieving more widespread adoption outside of their local, sustainability 'niche'.
The book seeks to address two significant gaps related to grassroots climate action: firstly the continuing dominance of the individualisation of responsibility for climate change action which presupposes that individuals hold both the ability and desire to shift their behaviours and lifestyle choices to align with a low carbon future. Secondly, the potential for community-based collectives to influence mainstream climate change governance, an area significantly under researched. Drawing on empirical research into Australian Climate Action Groups (CAGs) and related international research, the book argues that grassroots community-based collective action on climate change holds the key to broader social change.
This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of climate change, citizen participation, environmental sociology and sustainable development.

Описание: Use your kitchen to help combat climate change. When you go to the supermarket to buy groceries, you probably don't think about how everything got there: from the farmers and harvesting machines to the delivery trucks, stockers, and countless other people who are involved in delivering goods to your local market. But many real costs are involved--and most of them involve impacts to the environment more than to bank accounts. Food production contributes to one-fourth of our global greenhouse gas emissions. This is a significant number that's part of the climate change conversation. But you can take a few small steps to help lower that number--and The Low-Carbon Cookbook will show you how. Chef extraordinaire Alejandra Schrader offers science-backed information on how to make the most climate friendly choices--from examining the impact of the supply chain for the foods that end up on our plates to evaluating the carbon footprint of various plant-based options we have. The Low-Carbon Cookbook also includes these features: - 140 plant-based recipes made with fresh, wholesome, and seasonal ingredients that can help you lower your carbon footprint and foodprint - Seasonal and regional ingredient swaps you can make to allow you to create every dish in this book no matter where you live or the time of the year - Expert advice and tips on how to shop wisely, cook smart, and plan your meals as a way to help you save money and reduce your food waste If you're looking for a way to combat climate change from your kitchen, this book will help you with your goals. - - - Foreword by Dr. Gunhild Stordalen, founder and executive chair, EAT Foundation Talk of planetary emergencies and climate change can be so overwhelming as to scare us into inaction. Who has a budget for solar panels, let alone an electric car? We might want to protect the Amazon and other wild places but feel rather powerless at being able to do anything to protect these faraway places. Food changes all this. Our food choices have an outsized impact on the future of the planet. Fortunately, we have no shortage of options, no shortage of flavors, and no shortage of diversity to guide this transition. In this beautiful book, Alejandra has assembled amazing recipes with flavors from around the world. What I really like is how these recipes remind us that being climate citizens isn't just urgent and necessary but that it can be enjoyable while also being good for us. This is a book for the evidence-based, action-oriented eater. For those who want to better understand the challenges we face as a society and who refuse to sit back and watch. Who want to engage, act, and be a part of this decisive decade. There are rich chapters that outline climate, biodiversity, and food challenges. That explain how food can be a major solution. But best of all, it beautifully provides 140 recipes for people and planet. In 2019, my organization, EAT, brought together a team of 37 scientists from around the world to provide the best available evidence on what are healthy diets and what are the environmental limits of food--the so-called "planetary boundaries"--that define the safe environmental space for all of us and for our children. In conversations with Johan Rockstrцm, one of the world's leading environmental scientists who signaled such guidelines are still missing, we learned that food, our most intimate relationship with our own health, and also our most intimate relationship with nature were failing in both areas. Food has become the leading cause of poor health globally and is the biggest source of environmental destruction and degradation. However, this doesn't have to be the case. What foods we eat, how we produce them, and how much is lost and wasted can change everything. It also makes food our best bet for restoring the environment as well as re

Описание: This book pursues a comprehensive approach so as to arrive at a better understanding of the implications of climate change on sustainable development, focusing on the perspective of water.
In the coming decades, countries around the world will face increasingly severe challenges related to global climate change. While the details vary from country to country, the impacts will be especially grave for marginalized people, whose access to food, potable water, and safe shelter may be threatened due to fluctuations in rainfall and temperature, and to extreme weather events. Because weather extremes are the main way that climate change manifests itself, water governance is a crucial aspect of climate change resilience.
Following an overview of the ways climate change is affecting three cities in Africa, Water and Climate Change in Africa: Challenges and Community Initiatives in Durban, Maputo and Nairobi discusses the equity and climate justice implications, and then gives examples of ways in which a range of local community organizations are extending their current activities to address these challenges through innovative new programs and initiatives at the grassroots. This approach has implications for communities worldwide; it is a process of building on existing organizations' aptitudes and strengths in the light of local knowledge of climate challenges, and creating partnerships to build equity-enhancing new methods of protecting people's subsistence.
This book should be of interest to climate change scholars, activists and policy-makers, as well as development studies researchers and practitioners.
