This book addresses the role of education in overcoming poverty and oppression by imparting social justice education at the institution and community level.
Описание: This is the most comprehensive international discussion of higher education governance ever published. It presents a critical analysis of governance issues and reforms in: Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the UK, and the USA.
Описание: This edited volume, authored by scholars, students, and activists, focuses on how peace educators at the collegiate level can more effectively address gender and sexuality. Chapters focus on the classroom and the campus at large, and emphasize the importance of interdisciplinary practice, thoughtful approaches that offer both challenges and safety, and solidarity and support. The volume includes entries on hot and important topics, including trigger warnings, using popular culture in the classroom, sex trafficking, campus sexual assault, and more. Contributors come from a variety of disciplinary areas, making the volume eclectic in nature. Further, most entries include student voices, providing much- needed agency for college youth. While the book does offer a critical perspective, importantly, chapters also offer hope and possibility.

Описание: 2020 Choice Outstanding Academic Title Research frequently neglects the important ways that race and gender intersect within the complex structural dynamics of STEM. Diversifying STEM fills this void, bringing together a wide array of perspectives and the voices of a number of multidisciplinary scholars. The essays cover three main areas: the widely-held ideology that science and mathematics are "value-free," which promotes pedagogies of colorblindness in the classroom as well as an avoidance of discussions around using mathematics and science to promote social justice; how male and female students of color experience the intersection of racist and sexist structures that lead to general underrepresentation and marginalization; and recognizing that although there are no quick fixes, there exists evidence-based research suggesting concrete ways of doing a better job of including individuals of color in STEM. As a whole this volume will allow practitioners, teachers, students, faculty, and professionals to reimagine STEM across a variety of educational paradigms, perspectives, and disciplines, which is critical in finding solutions that broaden the participation of historically underrepresented groups within the STEM disciplines.

University commitments to diversity and inclusivity have yet to translate into support for women of color graduate students. Sexism, classism, homophobia, racial microaggressions, alienation, disillusionment, a lack of institutional and departmental support, limited help from family and partners, imposter syndrome, narrow reading lists—all remain commonplace. Indifference to the struggles of women of color in graduate school and widespread dismissal of their work further poisons an atmosphere that suffocates not only ambition but a person's quality of life.
In Degrees of Difference, women of color from diverse backgrounds give frank, unapologetic accounts of their battles—both internal and external—to navigate grad school and fulfill their ambitions. At the same time, the authors offer strategies for surviving the grind via stories of their own hard-won successes with self-care, building supportive communities, finding like-minded mentors, and resisting racism and unsupportive faculty and colleagues.

Описание: This volume provides unique insight into how American colleges and universities have been significantly impacted and shaped by college football, and considers how US sports culture more generally has intersected with broader institutional and educational issues.
Описание: At least one in four women attending college or university will be sexually assaulted by the time they graduate. Beyond this staggering statistic, recent media coverage of ""rape chants"" at Saint Mary's University, misogynistic Facebook posts from Dalhousie University's dental school, and high-profile incidents of sexual violence at other Canadian universities point to a widespread culture of rape on university campuses and reveal universities' failure to address sexual violence. As university administrations are called to task for their cover-ups and misguided responses, a national conversation has opened about the need to address this pressing social problem. This book takes up the topic of sexual violence on campus and explores its causes and consequences as well as strategies for its elimination. Drawing together original case studies, empirical research, and theoretical writing from scholars and community and campus activists, this interdisciplinary collection charts the costs of campus sexual violence on students and university communities, the efficacy of existing university sexual assault policies and institutional responses, and historical and contemporary forms of activism associated with campus sexual violence.
Описание: Social demonstrations that take place on university campuses have profound effects on students as well as the environments in which those students live and learn. These demonstrations, in recent years, have taken on traditional forms such as spontaneous protests, organized marches, and organized rallies, but they have also been affected by technologically mediated strategies that can bring larger sets of students together to support shared beliefs.Exploring the Technological, Societal, and Institutional Dimensions of College Student Activism provides emerging research exploring the theoretical and practical aspects of social demonstrations on university campuses and responses from administrative professionals. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as advocacy, student activism, and free speech, this book is ideally designed for university administrators, policymakers, government officials, academic leaders, researchers, and institutions seeking current research on student engagement in social demonstrations on the campuses of colleges and universities.
Описание: The Institutional Research profession is currently experimenting with many strategies to assess institutional effectiveness in a manner that reflects the letter and spirit of their unique mission, vision, and values. While a "best-practices" approach to the measurement and assessment of institutional functions is prevalent in the literature, a machine learning approach that synthesizes these parts into a coherent and synergistic approach has not emerged. A Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence Approach to Institutional Effectiveness in Higher Education presents a practical, effective, and systematic approach to the measurement, assessment, and sensemaking of institutional performance. Included are instruments and strategies to measure and assess the performance of Curriculum, Learning, Instruction, Support Services, and Program Feasibility as well as a meaningful Environmental Scanning method. The data collected in this system are organized into assessments of institutional effectiveness through the application of machine learning data processes that create an artificial intelligence model of actual institutional performance from the raw performance data. This artificial intelligence is visualized through five organizational sensemaking approaches to monitor, demonstrate, and improve institutional performance. Thus, this book provides a set of tools that can be adopted or adapted to the specific intentions of any institution, making it an invaluable resource for Higher Education administrators, leaders and practitioners.
