Описание: This open access book shows how the politics of migration affect community building in the 21st century, drawing on both retrogressive and progressive forms of mobilization. It elaborates theoretically and shows empirically how the two master frames of nostalgia and hope are used in local, national and transnational settings, in and outside conventional forms of doing politics. It expands on polarized societal processes and external events relevant for the transformation of European welfare systems and the reproduction of national identities today. It evidences the importance of gender in the narrative use of the master frames of nostalgia and hope, either as an ideological tool for right-wing populist and extreme right retrogressive mobilization or as an essential element of progressive intersectional politics of hope. It uses both comparative and single case studies to address different perspectives, and by means of various methodological approaches, the manner in which the master frames of nostalgia and hope are articulated in the politics of culture, welfare, and migration. The book is organized around three thematic sections whereby the first section deals with right-wing populist party politics across Europe, the second section deals with an articulation of politics beyond party politics by means of retrogressive mobilization, and the third and last section deals with emancipatory initiatives beyond party politics as well. Описание: Intersections: A Contemporary Student Primer on Race, Gender, and Class provides students with an illuminating and timely collection of articles pertaining to these key social issues in American history and contemporary culture. Students learn how to recognize the intersections of race, gender, and class, how to navigate these intersections in academic and personal pursuits, and how to serve as change agents for social justice. The anthology is divided into four units: theoretical foundations, historical perspectives, American culture, and contemporary moments. In Unit 1, students read selections that introduce Black feminist thought and shed light on income disparity. Unit 2 includes readings that examine labor and race relations in American history and culture. The articles in Unit 3 focus on American popular culture and competing standards of beauty. The final unit offers selections that explore the politics of constructions of womanhood, manhood, motherhood, and fatherhood through the lens of the Obama White House. Each reading is supported by pre-reading questions that inspire critical thinking and self-reflection, as well as post-reading questions that challenge deeper analysis concerning issues of power and empowerment. A diverse collection of current scholarship, Intersections is well suited for courses in history, politics, economics, sociology, gender studies, ethnic studies, and popular culture.

Описание: Hollywood at the Intersection of Race and Identity explores the ways Hollywood represents race, gender, class, and nationality at the intersection of aesthetics and ideology and its productive tensions. This collection of essays asks to what degree can a close critical analysis of films, that is, reading them against their own ideological grain, reveal contradictions and tensions in Hollywood’s task of erecting normative cultural standards? How do some films perhaps knowingly undermine their inherent ideology by opening a field of conflicting and competing intersecting identities? The challenge set out in this volume is to revisit well-known films in search for a narrative not exclusively constituted by the Hollywood formula and to answer the questions: What lies beyond the frame? What elements contradict a film’s sustained illusion of a normative world? Where do films betray their own ideology and most importantly what intersectional spaces of identity do they reveal or conceal?
