Описание: Although the Axis alliance during the Second World War was a set of political relationships just as much as the victorious alliance of the United Nations, it is rarely seen in these terms. Martin Folly's book rectifies this omission. He traces how the members of the alliance pursued their objectives by political as well as military means, addresses not only the diplomacy of relations between Germany, Japan and their allies, but also their attempts to gain benefits from relations with states not involved in the war - including, up until 1941, the United States and the Soviet Union. He also demonstrates the ways which they sought to exploit international politics- such as the inherent differences between the 'Big Three' of Britain, the US and the USSR - first to achieve their expansionist goals, then, as defeat closed in on them, to salvage something from the wreckage by renewed diplomatic initiatives. New Order Diplomacy sheds light on a missing element of the history of the Second World War. By incorporating the story of Axis diplomacy into the narrative of the war, Folly allows for a deepened understanding of the nuanced relationships between the German, Japanese and Italian regimes, their minor allies and with neutral states. This original study will prove a vital contribution to the study of the Second World War and 20th-century international relations.

Описание: This collection of essays on international relations and conflict in Africa is offered as a scholarly tribute to Professor Victor Ojakorotu, a distinguished scholar of African international politics. The editors, rising scholars Kelechi Johnmary Ani and Kayode Eesuola, have assembled a team of contributors whose work examines vital themes for understanding modern Africa. The volume encompasses assessments of African international politics, governance, conflict dynamics, and peacekeeping efforts, focusing on the national conflicts in Central African Republic and Somalia, protests in South Africa, terrorism in Nigeria, and insecurity in West African states. The dynamics of diplomacy and challenges of bilateral and multilateral relations, peacekeeping, gender in governance, and international trade figure prominently. International Relations and Security Politics in Africa will be essential reading for all students of the continent. The second theme of International Relations and Environmental Conflict in Africa covers pressing issues of environmental politics, such as environmental activism and litigation, climate change, conservation, the challenges of coastal communities, flood prevention, and waste management. Oil subsidy removal, rule of law, and the roles of media and religion are also closely considered. This collection’s final theme covers domestic security issues, such as policing, ethno-religious conflicts, local conflicts between farmers and herdsmen, and strategies of conflict resolution. Other issues under discussion include peacebuilding, urban machine politics, the place of children and youth in nation building, and the intersection of politics and psychology in self-determination struggles. Of vital importance to any student of modern Africa, these chapters offer a solid and detailed compendium of readings to contextualize key international relations subjects in the real world. The compendium is also a fitting tribute to the life’s work of one of the brightest scholarly minds Africa has produced.
Описание: Since 2011, the Arab world has seen a number of autocrats, including leaders from Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Yemen, fall from power. Yet, in the wake of these political upheavals, only one state, Tunisia, transitioned successfully from authoritarianism to democracy. Opposition parties forged a durable and long-term alliance there, which supported democratization. Similar pacts failed in Morocco and Mauritania, however. In Why Alliances Fail, Buehler explores the circumstances under which stable, enduring alliances are built to contest authoritarian regimes, marshaling evidence from coalitions between North Africa's Islamists and leftists. Buehler draws on nearly two years of Arabic fieldwork interviews, original statistics, and archival research, including interviews with the first Islamist prime minister in Moroccan history, Abdelilah Benkirane. Introducing a theory of alliance durability, Buehler explains how the nature of an opposition party's social base shapes the robustness of alliances it builds with other parties. He also examines the social origins of authoritarian regimes, concluding that those regimes that successfully harnessed the social forces of rural isolation and clientelism were most effective at resisting the pressure for democracy that opposition parties exerted. With fresh insight and compelling arguments, Why Alliances Fail carries vital implications for understanding the mechanisms driving authoritarian persistence in the Arab world and beyond.

Описание: Since the end of the World War II, developing countries have been exploring ways to realise national prosperity, hasten social and economic development and improve people’s welfare. For various reasons, however, poverty alleviation efforts have achieved different results. On the one hand, some developing countries like China have successfully reduced their impoverished population and become important contributors to the global poverty relief effort; on the other hand, the African continent, a place where most developing countries are located, is still struggling to lift people out of poverty.
At present, China-Africa poverty alleviation cooperation has established solid foundations as can be shown in strong political will and strategic consensus in poverty reduction serving bilateral common interests; the commonality in the basic features of poverty in China and Africa serving as the intrinsic driving force for poverty reduction cooperation; and increasing cooperation opportunities serving as external cementum. With increasing influence from south-south cooperation and African poverty reduction cooperation has entered a new era.
For African countries, it is advisable to draw selectively upon China’s poverty alleviation experiences based on each country’s own characteristics of history, culture and economics. That means, during the localization process of the foreign experiences on poverty alleviation, the African countries should form their own poverty reduction mode with African characteristics; for China, during the process of poverty reduction cooperation, the guiding ideology should be the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind, and the principle should be based on equality, inclusiveness and diversity of cooperation with respect for the autonomy of African poverty alleviation strategies, mobilising various forces to carry out comprehensive poverty alleviation measures.
