Описание: This book describes carbon nanothreads with complete and comprehensive knowledge covering theories, numerical methods, and properties comparisons with other carbon-based nanomaterials. For one thing, the main theoretical aspects in this book include: First-Principle Calculation, Density Functional Theory, Classical Molecular Dynamics Simulation, Non-equilibrium Molecular Dynamics Simulation, and Coarse Grained Simulation. For another thing, the main research contents include: Fundamental Mechanical Properties; Fracture Characteristics; Electronic and Magnetic Properties; Thermal Properties; Reinforcement in Polymer Composites; and other promising applications in engineering. The target of this book is to provide to many researchers the available theoretical and numerical methods, and useful computational results of carbon nanothreads for reference. This book can be used as a comprehensive source for scientists, academics, researchers, and engineers in various areas of engineering, physical sciences, and computational modeling. In order to achieve this target, the book introduces the microstructure information of carbon nanothreads and the modeling details at full length. The tunable mechanisms of physical properties of carbon nanothreads are discussed in detail, which enable integration of these nanoscale components into high-order structures for “bottom-up design” purpose. The revealed reinforced mechanisms of carbon nanothreads in polymer composites can provide theoretical guidance for engineering design of advanced polymer composites.

Описание:

Magnetism and Spintronics in Carbon and Carbon Nanostructured Materials offers coverage of electronic structure, magnetic properties and their spin injection, and the transport properties of DLC, graphene, graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, fullerenes, and their different composite materials. This book is a valuable resource for those doing research or working with carbon and carbon-related nanostructured materials for electronic and magnetic devices.

Carbon-based nanomaterials are promising for spintronic applications because their weak spin-orbit (SO) coupling and hyperfine interaction in carbon atoms entail exceptionally long spin diffusion lengths ( 100μm) in carbon nanotubes and graphene. The exceptional electronic and transport features of carbon nanomaterials could be exploited to build multifunctional spintronic devices. However, a large spin diffusion length comes at the price of small SO coupling, which limits the possibility of manipulating electrons via an external applied field.

  • Assesses the relative utility of a variety of carbon-based nanomaterials for spintronics applications
  • Analyzes the specific properties that make carbon and carbon nanostructured materials optimal for spintronics and magnetic applications
  • Discusses the major challenges to using carbon nanostructured materials as magnetic agents on a mass scale

Описание: 'The field of carbon materials is huge and often difficult to comprehend, but this book is easy to read and methodically covers the subject, including presenting materials properties and performance data with clear illustrations and graphs. References include relevant older and up-to-date sources of information. The book is tutorial style in nature and is an excellent resource for senior undergraduates, graduate students, researchers, and anyone who wants to learn more about carbon and incorporate carbon materials into new applications.'MRS BulletinElemental carbon materials take numerous forms including graphite, carbon fiber, carbon nanotube, graphene, carbon black, activated carbon, fullerene and diamond. These forms differ greatly in the structure, properties, fabrication method, and applications. The applications of these carbon forms include electronic, electromagnetic, electrochemical, environmental and biomedical applications. Carbon materials are a subject of intense research, with strong relevance to both science and technology. This book provides a tutorial-style and up-to-date coverage of the carbon forms. In addition to an introductory chapter on carbon materials, the book includes chapters on graphite, graphene, carbon black, activated carbon, carbon fibers, and carbon nanofibers/nanotubes. For example, the chapter on graphite covers various materials in the graphite family, including polycrystalline graphite, pyrolytic graphite, turbostratic carbon, intercalated graphite, graphite oxide, exfoliated graphite and flexible graphite, in addition to their electronic and mechanical properties. This book is suitable for use as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate students in science and engineering, and as a reference book for professionals. It is dedicated to the memory of the author's PhD thesis advisor, Professor M S Dresselhaus (1930-2017) of Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
