Описание:
The only man to serve as president and chief justice, who approached every decision in constitutional terms, defending the Founders' vision against new populist threats to American democracy
William Howard Taft never wanted to be president and yearned instead to serve as chief justice of the United States. But despite his ambivalence about politics, the former federal judge found success in the executive branch as governor of the Philippines and secretary of war, and he won a resounding victory in the presidential election of 1908 as Theodore Roosevelt's handpicked successor. In this provocative assessment, Jeffrey Rosen reveals Taft's crucial role in shaping how America balances populism against the rule of law. Taft approached each decision as president by asking whether it comported with the Constitution, seeking to put Roosevelt's activist executive orders on firm legal grounds. But unlike Roosevelt, who thought the president could do anything the Constitution didn't forbid, Taft insisted he could do only what the Constitution explicitly allowed. This led to a dramatic breach with Roosevelt in the historic election of 1912, which Taft viewed as a crusade to defend the Constitution against the demagogic populism of Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Nine years later, Taft achieved his lifelong dream when President Warren Harding appointed him chief justice, and during his years on the Court he promoted consensus among the justices and transformed the judiciary into a modern, fully equal branch. Though he had chafed in the White House as a judicial president, he thrived as a presidential chief justice.
Описание: Explore the Captivating History of the Six Wives of Henry VIII Henry VIII, King of England and Ireland in the first half of the 16th century, is one of history's most famous monarchs for many reasons. He ruled ruthlessly, was quick to cry "treason " and execute, and equally quick to fall in and out of love. Henry changed the religious fabric of England forever and left his mark on the wider world - but what of the six women he took as his queens? From the regal and capable Catherine of Aragon to the patient and generous Katherine Parr, Henry's wives represented a range of personalities, goals, beliefs, and influences on the king. Each of Henry's six wives represented a facet of the king himself, whether he liked to admit it or not; unfortunately, a Queen of England at the side of Henry VIII could never be sure of her husband's love - or her safety. These are the stories of three Catherines, two Annes and one Jane. This captivating history book covers topics such as:
Henry Tudor
Catherine of Aragon
Mistress Elizabeth Blount
Mistress Mary Boleyn
Anne Boleyn
Anne of Cleves
Mistress Mary Shelton
The Wooing of Jane Seymour
Catherine Howard
The Culpeper Affair
Katherine Parr

Описание: Not many people write a full account of their life. It is especially rare that a man at age 92, was able to write such a thorough account. When his wife passed away, Henry was so lonely that he began to write about his life, starting with his earliest memories, growing up in the Alleghany Mountains in Covington, Virginia during the Great Depression. His memories were so vivid and detailed that it brings his story to life. He remembered so many of those little things in life that it really makes one want to continue to read on. You will learn about what life was like in the different time periods in which he lived. He was an average American trying hard to make a life for himself and his family. He faced many challenges in his life, from surviving combat in the frigid winter of 1945 during the Battle of the Bulge with the 75th Division, to trying his hands at many different jobs, and facing many health issues. Henry said that he wrote this for his family to find when he was gone, but it has become much more than that. It has become a treasured piece of our American history. Henry was the last member of his generation of the Smith family. He wanted his children and future generations of his family to know where they came from. While at an Army training camp in Kentucky before shipping out to Europe in 1944, Henry ventured into town on leave and met a girl in a bowling alley. They had 3 dates and he carried her picture in his shirt pocket throughout the War. As soon as he got home, he married that girl. Anna Laura Conley was never far from his mind or his heart. As he wrote his story after she had passed away, he often paused to reflect on how much he missed her and how he longed to see her again. If you had a father or grandfather who grew up during the Great Depression and served in World War II, you should read this book. I think many questions that you might have will be answered and you might also gain an appreciation for what the "Greatest Generation" did to build our modern America. Henry Smith certainly offers us all a rare glimpse into our past that is slowly fading into the depths of time. -James Slagle McClintock (Editor)
