Подзаголовок: The williams films and postwar america
Рейтинг:
Поставляется из: Англии
Описание:

No American dramatist has had more plays adapted than Tennessee Williams, and few modern dramatists have witnessed as much controversy during the adaptation process. His Hollywood legacy, captured in such screen adaptations as A Streetcar Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and Suddenly, Last Summer, reflects the sea change in American culture in the mid-twentieth century. Placing this body of work within relevant contexts ranging from gender and sexuality to censorship, modernism, art cinema, and the Southern Renaissance, Hollywoods Tennessee draws on rarely examined archival research to recast Williamss significance.

Providing not only cultural context, the authors also bring to light the details of the arduous screenwriting process Williams experienced, with special emphasis on the Production Code Administration—the powerful censorship office that drew high-profile criticism during the 1950s—and Williamss innovative efforts to bend the code. Going well beyond the scripts themselves, Hollywoods Tennessee showcases findings culled from poster and billboard art, pressbooks, and other production and advertising material. The result is a sweeping account of how Williamss adapted plays were crafted, marketed, and received, as well as the lasting implications of this history for commercial filmmakers and their audiences.

Описание: The collapse of the classic Hollywood studio system in the late 1960s led in part, and for less than a decade, to a production trend heavily influenced by the international art cinema and reflecting a new self-conscious in the US about the national film patrimony. This period is known as the Hollywood Renaissance - but is known largely through its so-called principal auteurs, with the relegation to increasing oblivion of those other creative voices that emerged during a period that both permitted and encouraged an American art cinema. This book provides a revisionist account of this period by discussing (and thus memorialising) 24 directors of note who have not yet been given a proper place in the larger history of the period. As we approach the 50 year anniversary of the advent of the Hollywood Renaissance (which we can conveniently date with the release of Arthur Penn’s Bonnie and Clyde in September 1967 and the evaluative crisis it posed to the critical establishment), this more expansive approach to the auteurism of the period seems not only appropriate, but pressing - a necessary element of the re-evaluation of "Hollywood" with which cinema studies has been preoccupied under the challenge posed by the emergence and flourishing of other media.

Описание: With landmark films such as Fargo, O Brother Where art Thou?, Blood Simple, and Raising Arizona, the Coen brothers have achieved both critical and commercial success. Proving the existence of a viable market for "small" films that are also intellectually rewarding, their work has exploded generic conventions amid rich webs of transtextual references.

    R. Barton Palmer argues that the Coen oeuvre forms a central element in what might be called postmodernist filmmaking. Mixing high and low cultural sources and blurring genres like noir and comedy, the use of pastiche and anti-realist elements in films such as The Hudsucker Proxy and Barton Fink clearly fit the postmodernist paradigm. Palmer argues that for a full understanding of the Coen brothers' unique position within film culture, it is important to see how they have developed a new type of text within general postmodernist practice that Palmer terms commercial/independent. Analyzing their substantial body of work from this "generic" framework is the central focus of this book.

    Описание:

Global awareness of autism has skyrocketed since the 1980s, and popular culture has caught on, with film and television producers developing ever more material featuring autistic characters. Autism in Film and Television brings together more than a dozen essays on depictions of autism, exploring how autistic characters are signified in media and how the reception of these characters informs societal understandings of autism.

Editors Murray Pomerance and R. Barton Palmer have assembled a pioneering examination of autism’s portrayal in film and television. Contributors consider the various means by which autism has been expressed in films such as Phantom Thread, Mercury Rising, and Life Animated and in television and streaming programs including Atypical, Stranger Things, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Community. Across media, the figure of the brilliant, accomplished, and “quirky” autist has proven especially appealing. Film and television have thus staked out a progressive position on neurodiversity by insisting on screen time for autism but have done so while frequently ignoring the true diversity of autistic experience. As a result, this volume is a welcome celebration of nonjudgmental approaches to disability, albeit one that is still freighted with stereotypes and elisions.

    Описание:

In the late 1960s, the collapse of the classic Hollywood studio system led in part, and for less than a decade, to a production trend heavily influenced by the international art cinema.  Reflecting a new self-consciousness in the US about the national film patrimony, this period is known as the Hollywood Renaissance. However, critical study of the period is generally associated with its so-called principal auteurs, slighting a number of established and emerging directors who were responsible for many of the era’s most innovative and artistically successful releases.

With contributions from leading film scholars, this book provides a revisionist account of this creative resurgence by discussing and memorializing twenty-four directors of note who have not yet been given a proper place in the larger history of the period. Including filmmakers such as Hal Ashby, John Frankenheimer, Mike Nichols, and Joan Micklin Silver, this more expansive approach to the auteurism of the late 1960s and 1970s seems not only appropriate but pressing — a necessary element of the re-evaluation of 'Hollywood' with which cinema studies has been preoccupied under the challenges posed by the emergence and flourishing of new media.

"One part Judy Blume, one part Amy Schumer, Gimme Everything You Got is incredibly warm, bracingly frank, and laugh-out-loud hilarious. I didn't want the game to end." --Katie Cotugno, New York Times bestselling author of 99 Days

It's 1979--the age of roller skates and feathered bangs, Charlie's Angels and Saturday Night Fever--and Susan Klintock is a junior in high school with a lot of sexual fantasies . . . but not a lot of sexual experience. No boy--at least not any she knows--has been worth taking a shot on.

That is, until Bobby McMann arrives.

Bobby is foxy, he's charming . . . and he's also the coach of the brand-new girls' soccer team. Sure, he's totally, 100 percent, completely off limits. Sure, Susan doesn't stand a chance. But that doesn't mean she can't try out for the team to get closer to him, and Susan Klintock has always liked a challenge.

Between the endless drills and grueling practices, Susan discovers something else: She might actually love soccer. But being a part of the first girls' team at school means dealing with other challenges.

As friendships shifts, she finds her real passions might lie in places she didn't expect when the season began--and that discovering who she is will mean taking risks, both on and off the pitch.

Love. Lust. Soccer. Acclaimed author Iva-Marie Palmer returns with a fresh, funny, feminist coming-of-age comedy about learning to take your shot on the things that truly matter.
