Описание:
Governments, local authorities, school leaders, and teachers all over the world want to improve the educational attainment and participation of all students, and to minimise any systematic differences in outcomes for social and economic groups. A particular concern is for those students from backgrounds that may objectively disadvantage them at school and beyond. However, considerable effort and money is currently being wasted on policies, practices and interventions that have very little hope of success, and that may indeed endanger the progress that is being made otherwise. The poor quality of much education research evidence, coupled with an unwillingness among users of evidence to discriminate appropriately between what we know and do not know, means that opportunities are being missed. At a time of reduced public spending it is important that proposed interventions are both effective and efficient.
Overcoming Disadvantage in Education is unique in the way that it:
Shows where the solutions to underachievement and poverty lie
combines primary(new), secondary (official) and published (review) evidence
distinguishes between those possible causes of underachievement that are largely fixed for individuals, and those that are modifiable.
There are evidence-informed ways forward in handling under-achievement and increasing social justice in education. This book shows which the more likely approaches are, and where further work could yield further benefits.
This book will be a key text for students, developing academic researchers and supervisors in the social sciences, and for those research users charged with improving educational outcomes.

Описание: In far too many classrooms, the emphasis is on instructional strategies that teachers employ rather than on what students should be doing or thinking about as part of their learning. What's more, students' minds are something of a mysterious ""black box"" for most teachers, so when learning breaks down, they're not sure what went wrong or what to do differently to help students learn.
It doesn't have to be this way. Learning That Sticks helps you look inside that black box. Bryan Goodwin and his coauthors unpack the cognitive science underlying research-supported learning strategies so you can sequence them into experiences that challenge, inspire, and engage your students. As a result, you'll learn to teach with more intentionality—understanding not just what to do but also when and why to do it.
By way of an easy-to-use six-phase model of learning, this book:
Analyzes how the brain reacts to, stores, and retrieves new information.
Helps you ""zoom out"" to understand the process of learning from beginning to end.
Helps you ""zoom in"" to see what's going on in students' minds during each phase.
Learning may be complicated, but learning about learning doesn't have to be. And to that end, Learning That Sticks helps shine a light into all the black boxes in your classroom and make your practice the most powerful it can be.

Описание: Continuous advances in technologies, individuals, and the workplace have increased the importance of adult learning and professional development for keeping up with the current pace of technologies and information.Advanced Research in Adult Learning and Professional Development: Tools, Trends, and Methodologies explores the understanding, practice, and research within technical education and professional development. By providing a comprehensive view on educational technologies for adult learning, this book is essential for lecturers, practitioners, as well as academics interested in a variety of research in continuing education.
Описание: The extent to which teachers should make use of theoretical and expert knowledge as opposed to tacit experiential knowledge, and how these might be combined, is a perennial issue in discussions on pedagogy. This book addresses these debates through a creative development of the concept of productive uncertainty.
Описание: This book explores teacher professional development as a situated, socio-political practice. Drawing on cross-national case studies, and on the theories of Pierre Bourdieu, the study reveals the inherently political nature of professional development practices, showing them to be the product of tensions within and between competing policy, research and work pressures.

Описание:
This book introduces readers to the development of Lesson Study (LS) in the UK, making historical connections to the growth of Lesson Study in Japan, East Asia, the US and Europe. It explains how to conduct LS in schools and educational institutions, providing examples of compelling, externally evaluated impact outcomes for both primary learners and teacher learners, and vivid exemplars of LS in action across age ranges and curricular contexts.
Each chapter presents international research outcomes that clearly demonstrate how and why LS has a place within teacher learning approaches that have the greatest impact and the greatest capacity building potential for creating outstanding teaching. This is supported by primary research evidence, and linked with contemporary and recent high quality research worldwide into pupil learning, teacher learning, school improvement and system improvement. The book illustrates the diverse application of LS for innovating or transferring highly effective practices in a variety of contexts to boost learning for children with a range of challenges and specific needs.
Lesson Study provides a global perspective on the development of LS worldwide, exploring its impact on innovation, creativity, curricula and achievement in a variety of contexts. It will be of key interest to practitioners in schools and teacher education institutions, researchers, and policy and decision-makers at local, national and international levels. The book's explicit focus on the leadership of local authorities will also make it valuable reading for all leaders of professional development and school improvement.
