Описание: Deification was not only a pagan concept but a metaphor for a deeply Christian view of the purpose of human life. Norman Russell brings together much recent research on the Church Fathers from the second to the seventh centuries, offering an analysis of their spiritual teaching and setting it within the context of the times.
Описание: What is God's ultimate purpose for my life? What is the Doctrine of Eternal Progression, and why do the Mormons believe it? Did the early Christians really believe men could become gods? Did they, at least in part, believe as the Latter-day Saints do? What of other Christians? Did the earliest Christians really believe that the Son was another God, and that a plurality of gods existed in heaven? Does the Bible contain, or even permit such teachings? What did Psalm 82 mean to them? Is it true that early Christians taught in ways to hide sacred teachings of the Church from both their less advanced members and the public? Did ancient scribes deliberately alter their own sacred scriptures? Are many of the scripture proof texts most used by critics of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to attack the Doctrine of Eternal Progression really as useful to them as they think? Author and researcher D. Charles Pyle tackles these questions and critics' objections relative to the Doctrine of Eternal Progression, disentangles proof texts twisted by the critics, attempts to reconstruct the original readings of a few verses in the Bible, based on manuscript evidence, cultural background, structure and style of the texts, and furthermore explains the likely reasons why the Bible reads as it now does in several key texts. Comprised of two parts, one to be read through (presenting to the reader a cross section of texts from the New Testament and other early Christian literature, connecting elements of the early Christian doctrine of deification with part of the LDS Doctrine of Eternal Progression), and the other being a reference collection intended to be consulted as needed when questions arise (although it too can be read through, if desired). The author's original 1999 FAIR Conference paper has been revised, updated, and supplemented in this new print edition, and is the equivalent content of two volumes of material under one cover. Four indexes, including a scripture index listing every scripture or related text cited or quoted in the book, increases its usefulness and makes it easier to find what one is looking for in the text. While not an official LDS Church source, for Mormons and non-Mormons alike this book ought to be a part of any library on the subject of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons), and Latter-day Saint beliefs. Indispensable for those seeking thought-provoking discussions of difficult questions relating to LDS teachings regarding the doctrine of eternal progression, the nature of God, the relationship of man to God, the creation, Bible mistranslations, and more.
There is now a substantial scholarly consensus for the emergence of a high or divine Christology very early and from a Jewish context, but the questions of "how" and "why" need further study. Within the framework of traditional Jewish monotheism, Paul and other early Christians used the language of deity to describe Jesus. To investigate their view of Jesus, the author examines Paul's discourse in 2 Cor 3:16-4:6, employing insights from rhetorical criticism and Oneness Pentecostal Christology. He explains how early Christians proclaimed the deity of Jesus within their monotheistic Jewish context. He then identifies socio-rhetorical reasons for and practical consequences of the monotheistic deification of Jesus.
"The status quaestionis established by the likes of Bauckham, Hurtado, and Dunn among others may be taken for granted by those working in the field of biblical studies but their reception by Oneness scholars is sure to demand rethinking of the paradigmatic Nicene tradition and its interpretive assumptions that will have reverberations not only for the next generation of theologians but also for anyone interested in the christologies of the earliest followers of Jesus the Messiah. Kudos to David Bernard for his encyclopedic research, cogent analyses, and painstaking and measured argumentation that marks the emerging maturation of the Oneness Pentecostal academy."--Amos Yong, Professor of Theology & Mission, Fuller Theological Seminary
David K. Bernard, D.Th. 2015, University of South Africa, is president and professor of biblical theology at Urshan Graduate School of Theology. He is the author of over 30 books on Pentecostal theology, history, and life. He and his wife, Connie, founded New Life Church of Austin, Texas, out of which 16 additional churches were started under their leadership.
Описание: This volume illustrates the complexity and variety of early Christian thought on the subject of the image of God as a theological concept, and the difficulties that arise even in the interpretation of particular authors who gave a cardinal place to the image of God in their expositions of Christian doctrine. The first part illustrates both the p

The sky has opened. Angels descend to earth in fiery fury. Some claim to have seen these creatures, others claim to have been touched by them. Those with psychic abilities find their gifts magnified by the spiritual presences rising from Hell and falling from Heaven. Yes, the end is near. Or is it the beginning?
After a life of violence and crime, gang-leader Torrence provides meaning to her groups' destructive endeavors through discovery of Conrad, a once-possessed orator of demonic doctrines.
Destroying virtues for the sake of sin, Torrence leads her band of bad-boy brethren to murder, blood sacrifice, and supernatural ritual in an effort to restore her dark savior's powers so the apocalypse can be an unholy paradise.

Описание: This book considers the place of deification in the writings of Julian of Norwich and Richard Rolle, two of the fourteenth-century English Mystics. It argues that, as a consequence of a belief in deification, both produce writing that is helpfully viewed as sacred eloquence.

Описание: Building on fundamental re-evaluations of literature and religion in Rome in recent years, this study explores Cicero`s innovative roles in debates about deification. By considering Cicero`s works in their broader cultural contexts, it tracks changing concepts of death and the afterlife, and re-examines the backgrounds to ruler worship at Rome.
Описание: Perhaps no declaration incites more outrage than a human`s claim to be God. Those who make this claim in ancient Jewish and Christian mythology are typically either demonized or deified.
