In Sacrifice and Regeneration Yael Mabat focuses on the extraordinary success of Seventh-day Adventism in the Andean highlands at the beginning of the twentieth century and sheds light on the historical trajectories of Protestantism in Latin America. By approaching the religious conversion among Indigenous populations in the Andes as a multifaceted and dynamic interaction between converts, missionaries, and their social settings and networks, Mabat demonstrates how the religious and spiritual needs of converts also brought salvation to the missionaries. Conversion had important ramifications on the way social, political, and economic institutions on the local and national level functioned. Sub?Saharan Africa has a long history of internal and international migration, by choice or by constraint, and movement of people has deeply shaped the region. According to available statistics, about 33 million Africans were living outside their country of nationality in 2015. This represents 2.8 percent of the total population of the continent and only 14 percent of international migrants worldwide (UNDESA, 2015).
The paper finds that, in addition to one-way rural-urban migration, contemporary African migration is characterized by widespread multi-directional (including rural-to-rural and urban-to-rural) and circular migration. These patterns reveal that migration is performing a range of socio-economic functions far beyond the mere transfer of labour from agriculture to other sectors or from rural to urban areas. They highlight possible new structural transformation paths, responding to existing challenges faced by the region in terms of demographic and economic transition.

The authors draw on both quantitative data and interviews to uncover how progressive and conservative Christians determine with whom they align themselves religiously, and how they distinguish themselves from each other. They find that progressive Christians emphasize political agreement relating to social justice issues as they determine who is part of their in-group, and focus less on theological agreement. Among conservative Christians, on the other hand, the major concern is whether one agrees with them on core theological points. Ottoman Sephardi migrants in Mexico resisted unequivocal classification as either Ottoman expatriates or Mexicans through their links to the Sephardi diaspora in formerly Ottoman lands, France, Cuba, and the United States. By making use of commercial and familial networks, these Sephardi migrants maintained a geographic and social mobility that challenged the physical borders of the state and the conceptual boundaries of the nation.
