Описание: The floricultural industry has been undergoing an unprecedented revolu- tion in terms of the type of commodity produced and the production and marketing technology in both developed and developing countries. As a result of this revolution, as we know today, there is a flower for every purpose and for every person in the world, as is evident from the slogan of the Society for American Florists: "say it with flowers". In re- cent years, the Latin American and European countries have become sizeable competitors for the North American fresh flower markets and the trend continues growing. Like any other crop production, floricultural production can be divided into three basic factors: (1) production costs (2) quality (3) transportation costs. All these must be optimum for this area or industry to be safe from competition. With increasing consumer awareness and the current recession, the pressure from the artificial floral products in- dustry and also of neighbouring countries on the American fresh flower industry, and continued competition even amongst the growers, whole- salers and retailers, quality in floricultural industry is becoming increas- ingly important to all those concerned with handling these products. The visual quality aspects of the product are the sole determiner of consumer acceptability in this industry and, unlike fruits and vegetables, flowers cannot be marketed by just discarding the damaged portion.

Описание: Christel has been intrigued by the phenomenon of invasions since her studies as an undergraduate student in botany at Goettingen University where she took several of my courses and where I supervised her diploma thesis. Her diploma thesis already addressed the possible impact of hybridization for the invasiveness of plant species. By using molecular markers, she studied North American and European Rhododendron species. We were also in close contact while she was working on her PhD thesis at the Department of Community Ecology at the Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research UFZ in Halle. Having been one of the reviewers of her PhD thesis, I readily agreed when she asked me to write a short preface to this publication. While the main line of research on the role of evolutionary processes for plant invasions has mainly been on the response to a different natural selection pressures exerted by the abiotic and biotic site factors of the new environment, Christel has asked to which degree breeding efforts might have contributed to such pressures. She chose a very apt study object to address this topic, Mahonia aquifolium, a species native to North America and introduced to Europe as an ornamental plant, together with some other species of the same genus. Christel's basic question was whether invasive populations of Mahonia aquifolium in Europe originate from planted cultivars or from hybrids with M. repens und M. pinnata.

Описание: Somatic embryogenesis (SE) is a unique process by means of which a vegetative/somatic plant cell transforms into an embryo. This in vitro embryogeny has immense fundamental and practical applications. The SE process is complex and is controlled by a variety of external and internal triggers. This book compiles the latest advances in embryogenesis research on ornamentals and discusses the importance of embryogenic cultures/tissues in raising transgenic crops. The technique of cryopreservation in the protection of ornamental genetic resources is discussed using embryogenic culture/embryo as the tissue of choice, and the respective roles of the genotype, plant growth regulator, environment and other regulating factors in embryogenesis are discussed. The book also focuses on comparative biochemical and physiological differences during the acquisition and development of embryos. The importance of plant proteome and functional genomics as a source of markers is highlighted, and special attention is paid to genes / gene homologues (SERC) in characterizing embryogenesis.
