Описание: Selective laser melting (SLM) has established itself as the most prominent additive manufacturing (AM) process for metallic structures in aerospace, automotive and medical industries. For a reliable employment of this process, it has to conform to the demanding requirements of these industries in terms of quasistatic and, especially, fatigue performance. Shafaqat Siddique identifies the influence of SLM processing conditions on the microstructural features, and their corresponding influence on the mechanical behavior of the processed AlSi12 alloy structures. The author also gives insight into integrated manufacturing by combining conventional and SLM processes to get the synergic benefits. Requirements for fatigue-resistant designs in additive manufacturing are highlighted, and a novel method is developed for agile fatigue life prediction.

About the AuthorShafaqat Siddique worked as Scientific Assistant at TU Dortmund University, Department of Materials Test Engineering (WPT), headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Frank Walther, and completed his Ph.D. research in cooperation with Laser Zentrum Nord (LZN) in Hamburg. He continues his post-doctoral research at TU Dortmund University, Germany.

Описание:

Shape Memory Alloy Engineering, Second Edition builds upon the success of the first edition, while embracing the advancements in new materials, new systems and new applications. Readers will gain an understanding of the intrinsic properties of SMAs and their characteristic state diagrams, allowing for the design of innovative compact actuation systems. As with the first edition, the structure remains the same in order to guide the reader from the selection of the material, including the manufacturing aspects, the integration in actuator systems or other kind of devices (as dissipation and isolation elements), and the final applications to practical problems. In addition, a new section is solely dedicated to addressing modelling and design process aspects in order to provide the users with essential tools for product development and implementation to their specific problems. It also explores recent applications, dividing between consolidated commercial applications and correlated expected developments, as well as current research activities aimed at making up new devices for innovative implementations. The book realistically discusses both the potential of these fascinating materials as well as their limitations in everyday life, and how to overcome some of those limitations in order to achieve proper design of useful SMA mechanisms.

A Quantum Approach to Alloy Design: An Exploration of Material Design and Development Based Upon Alloy Design Theory and Atomization Energy Method presents a molecular orbital approach to alloy design that is based on electronic structure calculations using the DV-X alpha cluster method and new alloying parameters obtained from these calculations. Topics discussed include alloy properties, such as corrosion resistance, shape memory effect and super-elasticity that are treated by using alloying parameters in biomedical titanium alloys. This book covers various topics of not only metals and alloys, but also metal oxides, hydrides and even hydrocarbons.

In addition, important alloy properties, such as strength, corrosion resistance, hydrogen storage and catalysis are treated in view of electron theory.

  • Presents alloy design theory and the atomization-energy method and its use for the fundamental understanding of materials and materials design and development
  • Discusses, for the first time, the atomization-energy analysis of the local lattice strains introduced around alloying elements in metals
  • Illustrates a simplified approach to predict the structure and phases stability of new alloys/materials

Описание: This book investigates the microstructural and mechanical properties of titanium-tantalum (TiTa) alloy formed using selective laser melting (SLM). TiTa has potential orthopaedic biomedical applications thanks to its high strength to modulus ratio. However, because it is difficult to obtain, it is still not widely used. The book describes how SLM is utilized to form this alloy, and provides a better understanding of the SLM process in porous lattice structure fabrication and its control through statistical modelling.
