This book investigates how De Quincey’s writing was shaped by his work as a translator. Drawing on a wide range of materials and readings, it traces how De Quincey employed structures of interlinguistic and interdiscursive exchange to reimagine Romanticism. The book examines how his theories and practices of translation served to position his oeuvre, define his style, frame his philosophy and reinvent the meaning of literary creativity. Brecht de Groote traces in particular the ways in which De Quincey used translation to locate British Romanticism in its European context. In shedding new light on De Quincey, de Groote models a new translation-centric approach to the study of Romanticism.

Описание:
Situations of conflict offer special insights into the history of the interpreter figure, and specifically the part played in that history by photographic representations of interpreters.
This book analyses photo postcards, snapshots and press photos from several historical periods of conflict, associated with different photographic technologies and habits of image consumption: the colonial period, the First and Second World War, and the Cold War. The book's methodological approach to the "framing" of the interpreter uses tools taken primarily from visual anthropology, sociology and visual syntax to analyse the imagery of the modern era of interpreting. By means of these interpretative frames, the contributions suggest that each culture, subculture or social group constructed its own representation of the interpreter figure through photography.
The volume breaks new ground for image-based research in translation studies by examining photographic representations that reveal the interpreter as a socially constructed category. It locates the interpreter's mediating efforts at the core of the human sciences.
This book will be of interest to researchers and advanced students in translation and interpreting studies, as well as to those working in visual studies, photography, anthropology and military/conflict studies.

Описание: This book looks at translator and interpreter training, focusing on mediation and culture in a global context. It updates numerous research currents in translator and interpreter education by situating them in relation to broader curricular and technological discussions. Particular attention is given to the way in which translator and interpreter training relates both to other topics on university curricula, and to recent developments in the professional sphere of language mediation. These include the new European standard for translation services and the ethical training of interpreters. The significant impact of new technologies in translation is also studied. These discussions take place in the context of an increasingly mature and sophisticated theoretical environment of translator and interpreter training research, one which recognizes the implications of discourses such as constructivism and objectives-oriented design for new pedagogies in the field.
