Описание: The Golden Age of British Detective Fiction The idyllic English village of Lindsay Carfax isn't run by the parish council, the rating authority, the sanitary inspector nor the local cops as you might suppose. The real bosses are the Carders - something to do with wool, four hundred years back. They wound stuff on cards, I suppose. But these boys are very fly customers - they're right on the ball. Boiled down, it comes to this; they're a syndicate who run this place - which makes a packet - with their own rules. One way and another they probably own most of it." Thus ruminated Superintendent Charles Luke to Albert Campion who was contemplating visiting his wayward artistic niece in Carfax. And when a missing schoolteacher reappeared after nine days, and Campion's car was "inadvertently" damaged, not to mention Campion himself, then all the signs were that not all was what it seemed. Campion himself plays the central role in this quintessentially British mystery, but there are appearances too from all of Margery Allingham's regular characters, from Luke to Campion's former manservant Lugg, to his wife Lady Amanda Fitton and others. The dialogue is sharp and witty, the observation keen, and the climax is thrilling and eerily atmospheric.

Описание: "Devotees of G.M. Malliet and Charles Todd will enjoy this different and delicious series." --Booklist Commissaire Capucine Le Tellier and her husband, a renowned restaurant critic, are frequent and privileged guests of Paris's cultured society. Unfortunately, a more refined milieu doesn't keep unsavory behavior like murder off the menu. . . When the body of acclaimed Chef Jean-Louis Brault and a shotgun are discovered in an antique Louis Vuitton portemanteau, the general consensus is suicide. Brault had been understandably distraught, if not quite unhinged, amidst rumors that his restaurant La Mere Denis might lose its rare third Michelin star. But when Capucine investigates the scene of the crime, she doesn't think it's only the boulliabaisse that smells fishy. And when Le Monde suggests that Capucine's investigation is a cover up for the lethal consequences of food critics everywhere--a profession in which her husband takes great pride--she will stop at nothing to solve the case. Praise for Alexander Campion and the Capucine Culinary Mysteries "Riveting gastronomic mystery. . . Readers will want a second helping." --Publishers Weekly on The Grave Gourmet "Steeped in Parisian culture and class structure. . .this mystery makes for a fine getaway read." --Library Journal on Killer Critique

Описание: Between haute couture and haute cuisine, Parisian Commissaire Capucine Le Tellier finds murder to be more than the specialite du jour. . . When the senior food critic for Le Figaro is found face-first in a plate of Ravioles d'homard, there seem to be as many suspects as there are restaurants in the City of Light. Yet Capucine feels she'll solve the case quicker than it takes to find a 3-star rating in the Michelin Guide. Un problem, murders of food critics have become an epidemic. And there are just as many suspects, including a sexy starlet, an award-winning novelist, and a smorgasbord of aggravated chefs. While Capucine struggles to zero in on the murderer's tastes, she is confronted with a false dilemma: file and forget the case, leaving restaurant critics across France vulnerable to a killer's episodic cravings, or use her husband, Alexandre, himself a famous food journalist, as irresistible bait. Praise for Alexander Campion's Capucine Culinary Mysteries "Will appeal to a diversity of readers. Devotees of G.M. Maillet and Charles Todd will especially enjoy this different and delicious series." --Booklist on Killer Critique " A] countryside romp." --Kirkus Reviews on Crime Fraiche "An astonishing debut that raises the bar on today's detective novel." --Aram Saroyan on The Grave Gourmet

Описание: St. Edmund Campion, born in London in 1540, was an outstanding student and orator from his early years. After schooling at St Paul's, and Christ Church, he entered St John's College, Oxford, where he studied philosophy, theology and the classics. Caught in the middle of the Elizabethan Reformation, he compromised his Catholic faith at University, took the Oath of Supremacy, and was ordained an Anglican deacon. After a change of heart and retreat into Ireland, he eventually went to Rome in 1573 to enter the Society of Jesus. In 1580 he was commissioned by the Jesuit General to minister to the persecuted Catholics in England. He returned to England in June 1580 and began a secret ministry, passing from home to home in thirteen counties, via an underground Catholic network. A nationwide man-hunt was out for him, but he evaded his pursuers and secretly printed his book, Ten Reasons, which caused a sensation across the country. Betrayed by a false Catholic, Campion was captured in July 1581, imprisoned in the Tower of London and tortured on the rack. On 1st December 1581, before an enormous crowd at Tyburn, he was fearlessly martyred by hanging, drawing and quartering. Now, recount the life of Edmund Campion, saint and martyr in this newly revised and definitive version from TAN Books. A new and updated life of St. Edmund Campion, Simpson's classic biography has been thoroughly revised and enlarged by Fr. Peter Joseph. With a foreword by Cardinal Pell.
