Описание: This book explores a rapidly growing area of discussion in the health care industry, disruptive behavior in medical providers. The presence of disruptive behavior adversely impacts the providers of all disciplines: paraprofessional personnel, nurses, physicians and administrators. But more importantly, there may be a greater detrimental effect on quality and patient safety. This has led to mandated regulatory requirements that assist healthcare institutions in developing programs to address the problem. The book presents an evidence-based analysis of the disruptive provider behavior that defines the incidence, demographics, and profile of the behavior; discusses the specialties and work locations predisposed, as well as the interface with residents and nurses. The importance of patient safety, economic, and legal issues are addressed by a comprehensive, management strategy to effect positive, sustainable culture change in healthcare.

Описание: This book is dedicated to population health management and how it can be used to improve the health care and outcomes for patients with poly chronic conditions. Great potential exists to improve the health and health care of these individuals through improved coordination integrating multiple domains of the population health management approach.
Описание: This work aims to deepen our understanding of the role played by technical guidelines and tools for the design, construction and operation of healthcare facilities, ultimately establishing the impact of the physical environment on staff and patient outcomes.

Описание: Evidence-Based Diagnosis explains diagnostic, screening, and prognostic tests in clinical medicine. The authors' approach is based on many years of experience teaching physicians in a clinical research training program. Although needing only a minimum of mathematics, the quantitative discussions in this book are deeper and more rigorous than in most introductory texts. The book includes numerous worked examples and 60 problems (with answers) based on real clinical situations and journal articles. This book is a great choice for anyone looking to select, develop, or apply medical tests. Topics covered include: the diagnostic process; test reliability and accuracy; testing and treatment thresholds; critical appraisal of studies of diagnostic, screening and prognostic tests; test independence and methods of combining tests; quantifying treatment benefits using randomized trials and observational studies; Bayesian interpretation of P values and confidence intervals; challenges for evidence-based diagnosis; likelihood ratios and ROC curves.

Описание: Focusing on practical, patient related issues, this volume provides the basic concepts of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) as they relate to Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and presents various practical applications. It includes EBM concepts for use in the identification of cost-effective panels of immunostains and other laboratory tests and for improvement of diagnostic accuracy based on the identification of selected diagnostic features for particular differential diagnosis. EBM concepts are also put forth for use in Meta-analysis to integrate the results of conflicting literature reports and use of novel analytical tools such as Bayesian belief networks, neural networks, multivariate statistics and decision tree analysis for the development of new diagnostic and prognostic models for the evaluation of patients. This volume will be of great value to pathologists who will benefit from the concepts being promoted by EBM, such as levels of evidence, use of Bayesian statistics to develop diagnostic and other rules and stronger reliance on "hard data" to support therapeutic and diagnostic modalities.
This case studies book is an indispensable resource for educators, students, and practitioners of nursing. It is innovative in its application of lessons from the communication sciences to common challenges in the delivery of safe patient care. The authors apply basic tenets of human communication to the context of nursing to provide a foundation for practices that can advance the safety and quality of care.
The cases, which describe "close calls" and adverse events, are organized along the continuum of healthcare delivery, providing quick access to solutions in commonly encountered care situations. Each case is accompanied by a discussion of how skillful communication can be key to preventing and recovering from errors and adverse events. Thought-provoking discussion questions and references for further reading make this book a valuable reference for nursing educators, students, and practitioners across the world.
We are what we think all day long. At least that's what Ralph Waldo Emerson said. If that is true, then you should really stop and ask yourself "what am I thinking about right now?" And if you take a moment to really do that, then the title of this book will make sense to you. So often we simply react to what is going on around us and while we do "think" when we react, we often do not "critically think," because if we did, we would respond and not react. When I was in the Navy, I was taught to "work the problem," which meant to stop, look around, use whatever tools were available to you and figure out a solution. In fact, that's pretty much what I do today; I am a problem solver. I find solutions to problems that are oftentimes complex and illusive and I often do it by just standing there; taking a breath, looking at the information that is available to me and then making the best decision possible. Does it always work out the way I would like? Nope. But the outcome is positive a whole lot more often than it is negative and that's because I have reduced the uncertainty around the problem.
The purpose of this book is to show you how to reduce the uncertainty around the decisions you make, thereby increasing the likelihood of a positive outcome. And the way to do this is to understand the process of critical thinking and evidence-based practice. Being an evidence-based thinker means being able to wade through the masses of information and data and bring to the table something that we can use to make better decisions. And evidence-based decisions will more often than not result in positive management outcomes. So, welcome to my world.
And remember, don't do something, just stand there.
