Описание: For those who want an overdue fresh perspective on a much loved, yet in some ways misunderstood, musical repertoire, this book surveys a much wider panorama of compositional activity than is normally offered, combining the familiar territory of Vienna with many other centres and musical figures.
Описание: Classical symphonies are often considered as works for full orchestra, demanding fidelity to the composers` orchestral scores in performance, listening and study. This book resituates the cultural context, uncovering a largely untapped wealth of early nineteenth-century domestic music-making and chamber ensemble arrangements of Beethoven`s works.
Описание: Focusing on the period of most intense metric experimentation in the work of both Haydn and Mozart, author Danuta Mirka presents here a systematic discussion of the composers` metric strategies. Combining historical music theory with the cognitive study of music, Mirka`s award-winning book sheds new light on this repertoire and redefines the role of meter and rhythm in Classical music.

Описание: Thoughtful musicians seeking ways to deepen their understanding of how tonal music works will be drawn to this study focused on Haydn and Mozart, two masters from the Viennese Classical period. Schenkerian tools and an innovative approach to harmony are synthesised in penetrating analyses, and alternative analytical approaches are critiqued.
Описание: The first extended study of the combined reception of Haydn and Mozart in the long nineteenth century, this book generates new, holistic understandings of their musical, cultural and historical significance in the Germanic, French and Anglophone worlds. It places a wide range of written sources under the microscope, including serious and popular biographies, scholarship, musical and non-musical criticism, and a diverse body of fiction, and evaluates the impact of anniversary commemorations. Haydn and Mozart in the Long Nineteenth Century determines how reputations, images and narratives for the two composers converge, diverge, develop at different speeds, and influence one another. Countering received wisdom about Haydn's reputational decline and reassessing Mozart reception through consideration of a broad spectrum of publications, we hear Haydn and Mozart speaking to the long nineteenth century in more nuanced, powerful, and persuasive voices than previously recognized.
Описание: Hypermetric Manipulations in Haydn and Mozart offers a systematic classification of hypermetrical irregularities in relation to phrase structure. It also offers a comprehensive account of the ways in which phrase structure and hypermeter were described by eighteenth-century music theorists, conceived by eighteenth-century composers, and perceived by eighteenth-century listeners.
Meeting Mozart is a rich historical novel that spans generations and brings to light the incredible life story of Mozart`s librettist, Lorenzo Da Ponte, a Jewish-born priest.
This book explores how the Enlightenment aesthetics of theater as a moral institution influenced cultural politics and operatic developments in Vienna between the mid-eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Moralistic viewpoints were particularly important in eighteenth-century debates about German national theater. In Vienna, the idea that vernacular theater should cultivate the moral sensibilities of its German-speaking audiences became prominent during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa, when advocates of German plays and operas attempted to deflect the imperial government from supporting exclusively French and Italian theatrical performances. Morality continued to be a dominant aspect of Viennese operatic culture in the following decades, as critics, state officials, librettists, and composers (including Gluck, Mozart, and Beethoven) attempted to establish and define German national opera. Viennese concepts of operatic didacticism and national identity in theater further transformed in response to the crisis of Emperor Joseph II's reform movement, the revolutionary ideas spreading from France, and the war efforts in facing Napoleonic aggression. The imperial government promoted good morals in theatrical performances through the institution of theater censorship, and German-opera authors cultivated intensely didactic works (such as Die Zauberfl te and Fidelio) that eventually became the cornerstones for later developments of German culture.

Описание: Interpretive and biographical essays by a major authority on Bach and Mozart probe for clues to the driving forces and experiences that shaped the character and the extraordinary artistic achievements of these iconic composers.
Описание: Music intrudes to our most intimate subjectivity, thus making it a privileged field to which so-called "existential semiotics", a new theory and philosophy developed by the author himself, may be applied.
