Описание: Shattering the Illusion is the first book to gather and comparatively analyze policies addressing child sexual abuse complaints in a selection of religious institutions in Canada. Although there is a substantial body of literature regarding Christianity and sexual abuse, very little of it focuses on religious institutions in Canada and their respective policies. In the foreword, Tracey J. Trothen summarizes the Cornwall Inquiry, out of which this book arose. She then examines the Roman Catholic Church, The United Church of Canada, the Anglican Church, the Mennonite Church, Islam, and the Canadian Unitarian Council/Unitarian Universalist Association, describing in detail the evolution and particular content of policies and procedures that address child sexual abuse complaints directed at paid and volunteer faith community representatives and/ or leaders. She identifies differences and common themes among the approaches taken by the institutions and provides a summary table for an accessible comparative overview. Child sexual abuse is not new, but the emergence of policies to address abuse complaints within religious institutions is. This book identifies significant and shared causal factors behind the emergence of policy and reviews their content carefully. This review will serve as a significant tool for furthering the development of such policies.

Owens wrestles with the question of why white men paid notoriously high prices to gain sexual access to the bodies of enslaved women to whom they already had legal and social access.
Owens centers the survival strategies and intellectual labor of Black women enslaved in New Orleans to unravel the culture of violence they endured, in which slaveholders obscured "the presence of force" with arrangements that included gifts and money. Owens's storytelling highlights that the classic formulation of rape law that requires "the presence of force" and "the absence of consent" to denote a crime was in fact a key legal fixture that packaged predation as pleasure and produced, rather than prevented, violence against Black women. Owens dramatically reorients our understanding of enslaved women's lives as well as of the nature of violence in the entire venture of racial slavery in the U.S. South. Unsettling the idea that consent is necessarily incompatible with structural and interpersonal violence, this history shows that when sex is understood as a transaction, women are imagined as responsible for their own violation.

Challenges Students with Learning Disabilities Face without Transition Programs to Post-Secondary Institutions

Christine Warian Ed.D. has been in education for over two decades and, throughout her career, has developed a passion for literacy and dyslexia. She has also developed a desire to prepare the next generation of teachers as they embark on their career educating students who come into their lives. Challenges Students with Learning Disabilities Face without Transition Programs to Post-Secondary Institutions was developed as a dissertation topic since Dr. Warian wanted to know what programs are available to students with learning disabilities as they prepare to transition to post-secondary institutions. Dr. Warian is familiar with services that are available to students with learning disabilities in the K-12 school environment and felt a need to investigate what programs, if any, are available to this population of students at the post-secondary level. Administrators of post-secondary institutions would benefit from reading this text to provide them guidance in what to provide to students with learning disabilities that are enrolled in their institution. Investigating post-secondary institutions, private and public, in the state of New Jersey, few institutions provide programs for students with learning disabilities. Information provided in this work, from institutional websites as well as participants' experiences, indicates a need at the post-secondary level to ensure students with a learning disability have the same opportunity as their non-learning-disabled peers at the post-secondary level.
