Описание: Our world and bodies are becoming increasingly polluted with chemicals capable of interfering with our hormones and thus, possibly, our present and future neural and mental health. This book focuses on if and how these chemicals, known as endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), affect the development and function of the brain and might be contributing to neural disorders rapidly rising in prevalence. It provides an overall synthesis of the EDC field including itshistorical roots, major hypotheses, key findings, public health policy implications, and research gaps.
Описание: Most physiological and behavioral mechanisms that comprise the stress response come from laboratory experiments using domesticated animals. This book summarizes work to understand stress in natural contexts.

Описание: This volume starts with an elementary introduction covering stem cell methodologies used to produce specific types of neurons, possibilities for their therapeutic use, and warnings of technical problems. In addition the authors report successes in achieving the derivation of a specific type of neuron. The dopamine neuron offers an important example and is discussed in more detail. Additional chapters cover problems obviously approachable with cells derived from stem cells, including their need in surgeries for pituitary cancers. The last chapter provides an overview of this particular field of research and presents a vision for its future directions.

Описание: Estrogens are key modulators of brain regions that mediate learning and memory formation. This regulation has significant translational implications, as estrogens contribute to age-related memory decline and dementia, emotional disorders, addiction, and recovery from brain injury. Although the importance of estrogens for memory formation has been well accepted within the behavioral neuroendocrinology community, it has yet to be fully appreciated by neuroscientists outside of the discipline. Recent National Institutes of Health policies on the inclusion of sex as a biological variable in grant applications will force thousands of researchers to consider hormonal regulation of memory for the first time. However, the majority of these researchers are not trained endocrinologists, and no previous monograph comprehensively encompasses the breadth of basic and clinical research on this subject. Thus, this book provides a vital resource for non-endocrinologists and endocrinologists alike. Estrogens and Memory: Basic Research and Clinical Implications provides a compendium of cutting-edge basic and clinical research describing the ways in which estrogens regulate memory in a variety of species. Chapters are written by leading experts whose work is on the forefront of this exciting field. Three fundamental discussions focus on: effects of estrogens on the hippocampus and other brain regions central to memory, effects of estrogens on memory and related cognitive processes throughout the lifespan, and translational implications of estrogenic regulation of memory for aging and disease.

Neurosecretion in invertebrates, 2. Adrenergic neurons, 3. Mechanisms of release of neurohypophyseal materials, 4. Hypothalamic control of anterior pituitary. Weitere Kurzvortrage waren verschiedenen Problemen der Neurosekretion gewidmet. Описание: Neuroendocrinology is the study of the interactions between the nervous system and the endocrine system. The concept arose from the recognition that the secretion of hormones from the pituitary gland is closely controlled by the brain, especially by the hypothalamus. This book presents the research in the field from around the world.

Описание: Given that the hypothalamus is the center of neuroendocrine activity, the reader will learn about the molecular specification of hypothalamic cells, developmental modulators and epigenetic factors influencing hypothalamic development, and the development of neuroendocrine circuits.

Описание: It is well established that progesterone plays a role in the brain and hypophysis as a facilitator and inhibitor of sexual behavior and gonadotropin release in the female rat (Everett 1961; Caligaris et al. 1971; Brown-Grant and Naftolin 1972; Dorner 1972; Meyerson 1972; Barraclough 1973; Goldman and Zarrow 1973; Mann and Barraclough 1973; Freeman et al. 1976; Feder and Marrone 1977; Goodman 1978; Attardi 1981), guinea pig (Morin and Feder 1974), and primates (Odell and Swerdloff 1968; Spies and Niswender 1972; Yamaji et al. 1972; Karsch et al. 1973; Dierschke et al. 1973; Knobi11974; Clifton et al. 1975). In an attempt to learn whether a specific progesterone uptake mechanism exists in the brain and the hypophysis, the distribution and retention pattern of radioactivity after in vivo injection of labeled progesterone was studied. Early work of Kato (1963) did not show a selective uptake of radioactivity in the hypo- thalamus of immature and estrogen-primed immature rats after injection oflow- specific-activity 14C]progesterone, but some tendency of the reticular formation to take up radiation was observed. Laumas and Farooq (1966) reported that after intravenous administration of labeled progesterone to ovariectomized estrogen- treated rats, radioactivity in the brain and pituitary appeared to show a very slight, insignificant increase 1-2 min after injection, but the uptake pattern was not definite, as had been seen with estradiol. Описание: The brain, therefore, which is protected by the blood-brain barrier from disturbing and potentially noxious exogenous and endogenous agents circulating in the blood, has to have certain neurohemal regions beyond this barrier, such as the neural lobe and the median eminence (infundibulum), where neurohor- mones have free access to the blood stream.
