Описание: Authentic Case Studies: Adolescence to Emerging Adulthood provides future educators and practitioners with a comprehensive and diverse collection of case studies that document a variety of challenges faced by at-risk youth. The case studies reflect the lived experiences of hundreds of individuals, relayed in their own voices. Through them, readers learn about issues that affect youth today, as well as issues that have played important roles in developmental trends of the past. Topics addressed within the case studies include, but are not limited to, substance abuse and exploration, sexual behavior, bullying and peer victimization, dietary and mental health disorders, depression, ADHD, and a multitude of other behaviors that have proven potentially difficult for youth and emerging adults. Throughout, readers are provided with key questions to help them analyze the cases, determine patterns of behavior, and identify appropriate interventions. Authentic Case Studies is a highly valuable and practical collection that prepares those who will educate, work with, and assess at-risk youth to do so with compassion and expertise. The text is ideal for courses in education, human development, social work, counseling, and psychology.

Описание: This book describes a variety of programs -- firmly based in psychological theory and modern decision analysis -- that are suitable for teaching adolescents how to improve both their own decision making skills and their understanding of the decision making of others. Providing practical advice as well as theoretical analysis, this volume addresses general questions such as the nature and rationale of the enterprise, its implementation, and its evaluation. Relevant to several current adolescent problems including drug abuse, this is an excellent source, either as research, new curriculum, or enrichment of old curriculum.

Описание: This book is intended for prospective secondary teachers, university education and human development faculty and students, and in-service secondary school teachers. The text focuses on the current environment of adolescents. Physical growth, sexuality, nutrition, exercise, and substance abuse receive attention. Social development depends on consideration of advice given by peers and adults. Neuroscience insights are reported on information processing, attention and distraction. Detection of cheating, cyber abuse, and parental concerns are considered. Career exploration issues are discussed. Visual intelligence, creative thinking, and Internet learning are presented with ways to help students gauge risks, manage stress, and acquire resilience.

Peers become the most prominent influence on social development during adolescence, and they recognize the Internet as their greatest resource for locating information. Teachers want to know how to unite these powerful sources of learning, peers and the Internet, to help adolescents acquire teamwork skills employers will expect of them. This goal is achieved by implementing Collaboration Integration Theory. Ten Cooperative Learning Exercises and Roles (CLEAR) at the end of chapters allow each student to choose one role per chapter. Insights gained from these roles are shared with teammates before work is submitted to the teacher. This approach enables students to select assignments, expands group learning, and makes everyone accountable for instruction. The adult teacher role becomes more creative as they design exercises and roles that differentiate team learning. Using Zoom or other platforms a teacher can observe or record cooperative team sharing. Involvement with CLEAR can enable prospective teachers to apply this system to empower their secondary students.

Описание: Working Together for Children provides an account of the systems and processes of multi-agency work with several groups of children and their families. The key philosophy of the book is that such work is inherently complex, and only by understanding and grappling with these complexities can prospective or practising professionals within children's services contribute really effectively to multi-agency working.

This second edition contains updated references to legislation and guidance underpinning multi-agency working, as well as fresh configurations of chapters to reflect new ways of categorising needs of, and organising support for, children in a variety of circumstances. New chapters are included for specific groups of children including coverage of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and youth justice.

Reflection on practice, to help link policy with practice, is a theme running throughout the book, which uses features to assist the reader including:
- information boxes giving further factual details of particular areas related to multi-agency working
- reflective exercises including case studies
- questions designed to stimulate reflection on issues raised
- an appendix providing points to consider and suggestions for the exercises

This introduction is for trainee practitioners in childcare or childhood related courses, education, social work, youth work and health care, or for those already working in such settings who are looking to improve their practice.

Описание:

Research on the academic and social impairments related to disruptive behavior disorders, such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), suggests that youth with these disorders are at unusually high risk for school failure, school dropout, significant behavior problems, social rejection, and alcohol/substance abuse and dependence when compared to their peers. Clearly, effective interventions for this population are essential. However, research also suggests that due in part to deficits in executive functioning (e.g., memory, organization, planning), youth with disruptive behavior disorders are unlikely to benefit from interventions drawing strictly from cognitive or insight-based therapies. Therefore, the literature regarding counseling and therapy for adolescents seems to divide along two general lines: 1) a rich and growing counseling literature on internalizing disorders (e.g., CBT for social anxiety) and transition planning (e.g., college and career counseling), and 2) an equivocal counseling literature on externalizing disorders, where theory, research, and practice are rarely integrated.

The proposed book bridges the gaps in the literature by integrating research and practice specific to the difficulties experienced by adolescents with disruptive behavior disorders. Much of our discussion will be based on our research of the Challenging Horizons Program and the High School Treatment Development Project conducted at James Madison University. During the course of these studies, graduate and undergraduate students have been trained to build alliances with adolescents, their teachers, and their families for the purpose of implementing evidence-based interventions. Counseling Adolescents with Disruptive Behavior Disorders describes this process in detail--drawing directly from the research and the relevant literature--with a focus on how this research can inform practice.

This therapeutic approach is best described as "solution-focused" because it uses a trans-theoretical model, similar to that advocated by Steve de Shazer, John J. Murphy, and others. Counseling Adolescents with Disruptive Behavior Disorders builds on this tradition by describing how these concepts and techniques can be applied to youth with disruptive behaviors, while providing the reader with specific intervention ideas, troubleshooting strategies, and research findings from these studies and others.
