“Education, Leadership, Wisdom” is an institutional history of one of the leading Native American tribal colleges. Salish Kootenai College began in 1976 as a response from the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes to the failure of higher education to recruit, educate, and graduate Native American students from the Flathead Indian Reservation in western Montana. The college opened its borrowed doors to students in winter term 1977 as a newly formed tribal college and as a branch campus of Flathead Valley Community College of Kalispell, Montana.
By 2010 the college offered eleven bachelor’s degrees, fifteen associate degrees, and five vocational certificate programs of study to 877 full-time equivalent students. Instructional and student support services were provided by 68 full-time faculty, 53 part-time faculty, and 120 staff members. From 1980 to 2010 the college conferred 1,461 associate and bachelor’s degrees on Indian students, more than the total Indian graduates of all Montana public and private colleges and universities in the last 125 years.

This prompted objections from the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, who already operated a lucrative casino in the region. Brook Colley's in-depth case study unravels the history of this disagreement and challenges the way conventional media characterizes intertribal casino disputes in terms of corruption and greed. Consulting a wealth of sources, both Osage and otherwise—ethnographies, government documents, missionary records, traveler narratives—Edwards considers how the first century and a half of colonization affected Osage gender construction. She shows how women and men built the Osage empire together. Once confronted with US settler colonialism, Osage men and women increasingly focused on hunting and trade to protect their culture, and their traditional social structures—including their system of gender complementarity—endured. Gender in fact functioned to maintain societal order and served as a central site for experiencing, adapting to, and resisting the monumental change brought on by colonization.Through the lens of gender, and by drawing on the insights of archaeology, ethnography, linguistics, and oral history, Osage Women and Empire presents a new, more nuanced picture of the critical role of men and women in the period when the Osage rose to power in the western Mississippi Valley and when that power later declined on their Kansas reservation.
In The Power of the Steel-tipped Pen Noenoe K. Silva reconstructs the indigenous intellectual history of a culture where—using Western standards—none is presumed to exist. Silva examines the work of two lesser-known Hawaiian writers—Joseph Ho‘ona‘auao K?nepu‘u (1824–ca. 1885) and Joseph Moku‘?hai Poepoe (1852–1913)—to show how the rich intellectual history preserved in Hawaiian-language newspapers is key to understanding Native Hawaiian epistemology and ontology. In their newspaper articles, geographical surveys, biographies, historical narratives, translations, literatures, political and economic analyses, and poetic works, K?nepu‘u and Poepoe created a record of Hawaiian cultural history and thought in order to transmit ancestral knowledge to future generations.
