Описание: The study offers an interdisciplinary analysis of Harold Pinter’s dramatic discourse and focuses on the way power makes the characters play on the borders of linguistic, spatial, narrative and gender configurations. It examines the experimental nature of Harold Pinter’s dramatic technique and how he compromises both the realistic and the absurd dramatic formulae. The study also investigates the narrative of the past – a new dramatic technique in Pinter’s Plays, which brings into focus the inner life of the characters without causing any severe disturbance to the realistic conventional formula. It asserts that the narratives of the past become a form of doing, of being anchored in life and of acting in response to it. It also argues that sexuality is constantly submitted to manipulation and that women are more prepared than men to transgress gender constructions.
«In the wake of pioneering scholarship by Sharon Marcus and Juliette Rogers, Giada Alessandroni’s study situates Belle ?poque women’s writing in the broader literary and cultural history of friendship, highlighting how representations of female homosociality were used ‘to deconstruct gender and redefine modern femininity’ (p. 24). One of the work’s key strengths lies in its careful navigation of the relationship between subversion and the re-inscription of gender norms in a range of middlebrow works by successful women writers. […] Of particular interest to scholars of women’s writing and the Belle ?poque, Alessandroni’s analysis nuances our understanding of female homosociality, reminding us that literature need not be avant-garde to reflect socio-cultural change.» (Helen Craske, French Studies 76.3, July 2022)
Second fiddle to love, fleeting and inauthentic, a disguise for sexual rivalry, a practice to be policed or, at most, a social mechanism aptly reinforcing traditional gender norms, female friendship did not always have a good reputation in canonical and didactic literature from nineteenth-century France. But how did French women imagine and represent their relationships in fiction, and to what ends?
Situated at the intersection of feminist cultural history and Belle Epoque literary studies, this book explores fictional representations of female homosociality in novels by Daniel Lesueur, Gabrielle R?val, Marcelle Tynaire, and Yver Prost, among others, including women’s writing of the Belle Epoque within the narratives of the literary and cultural history of friendship in the long nineteenth century.
Playing with the tension between traditional and modern womanhood and intersecting with topics as diverse as the female body, work, education, marriage, heterosexual love, and the moral regeneration of the French nation, the representation of female homosociality constitutes, in these texts, one of the literary devices through which the figure of the femme moderne comes into being on paper and reflects the authors’ engagement with a form of female modernism that problematizes the dichotomy between «high» and «popular» literature, helping to give shape to women’s experience of modernity.
This book was the joint winner of the 2019 Peter Lang Young Scholars Competition in Nineteenth-Century French Studies.

Описание:

Описание:
Passionate allegiances to competing theoretical camps have stifled dialogue among today's literary critics, asserts Fran?oise Lionnet. Discussing a number of postcolonial narratives by women from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, she offers a comparative feminist approach that can provide common ground for debates on such issues as multiculturalism, universalism, and relativism.
Lionnet uses the concept of m?tissage, or cultural mixing, in her readings of a rich array of Francophone and Anglophone texts—by Michelle Cliff from Jamaica, Suzanne Dracius-Pinalie from Martinique, Ananda Devi from Mauritius, Maryse Conde and Myriam Warner-Vieyra from Guadeloupe, Gayl Jones from the United States, Bessie Head from Botswana, Nawal El Saadawi from Egypt, and Leila Sebbar from Algeria and France. Focusing on themes of exile and displacement and on narrative treatments of culturally sanctioned excision, polygamy, and murder, Lionnet examines the psychological and social mechanisms that allow individuals to negotiate conflicting cultural influences. In her view, these writers reject the opposition between self and other and base their self-portrayals on a m?tissage of forms and influences.
Lionnet's perspective has much to offer critics and theorists, whether they are interested in First or Third World contexts, American or French critical perspectives, essentialist or poststructuralist epistemologies.
This book examines homicide-suicides in a post-communist country in South-East Europe. It presents results regarding risk factors and particularities of homicide-suicides in Romania committed in the period 2002–2013.
The author analyses statistical data from legal records, police registers, and online newspapers discussing the way in which the victims and aggressors of homicide-suicides are represented. She completed the data by investigating six penitentiaries in Romania regarding the risk factors specific to various types of homicide-suicide: intimate partner femicide-suicides, familicide-suicides, filicide-suicides and homicide-suicides committed by police officers.
