Описание: Synopsis: Religion is commonly viewed through the lens of the world's religious traditions, stressing the differences, and often the conflicts, among them. The author of this book instead presents religion as a common and universal human phenomenon, based deeply in a human nature shared by all. In this view, the underlining and unifying principle of religion is a particular affirmative attitude toward life, which he presents as the Ultimate Value, and as such the key cultural constituent and defining factor of all religion. This Ultimate Value finds its expressions in various civilizations, and results in a variety of forms; these are what we know as the world's religious traditions. By analyzing the roles of both culture and civilization in their attitudes toward life, the author places religion beyond religious traditions, and shows how the latter, regardless of whether they are theistic or atheistic, draw their principles from the former, mainly by promoting the Golden Rule in its applications. Endorsements: "Wojciech Zalewski's synthesis of religions . . . presents] a Rousseau-like view that human beings are fundamentally good, born with a desire and respect for life, which becomes perverted by the institutions of their civilization. The evidence that he is right lies in the countless acts of goodness performed by individuals in their daily life apart from, and sometimes in opposition to, the norms of their societies. The Crucible of Religion is an uplifting and hopeful book by a true humanitarian." --Kenneth R. Graham Professor Emeritus Muhlenberg College "Zalewski examines religion as a personal and social construct based on the human yearning for life . . . By differentiating culture from civilization he is able to distinguish between religion as such and various religious traditions . . ., and in so doing to recast the discussion of God in terms of the affirmation of life implemented through the practice of the Golden Rule . . . By equating life with God, Zalewski opens a dialogue among agnostics, atheists, and believers. --Thomas Sheehan Professor of Religious Studies Stanford University Author Biography: Wojciech Maria Zalewski is the Curator for Slavic and East European Collections Emeritus and Bibliographer for Religious Studies at the Stanford University Libraries. He is the author of Untersuchungen uber the literarische Gattung der Apokalypse 1-3.

Описание: This co-authored collection offers valuable insights about the impact of leading off-campus study on faculty leaders' teaching, research, service, and overall well-being. Recognizing that faculty leaders are themselves global learners, the book addresses ways that liberal arts colleges can more effectively achieve their strategic goals for students' global learning by intentionally anticipating and supporting the needs of faculty leaders, as they grow and change. Faculty as Global Learners offers key findings and recommendations to stimulate conversations among administrators, faculty, and staff about concrete actions they can explore and steps they can take on their campuses to both support faculty leaders of off-campus programs and advance strategic institutional goals for global learning. This collection includes transferrable pedagogical insights and the perspectives of faculty members who have led off-campus study programs in a variety of disciplines and geographic regions.

What is philosophical about the practice Philosophy for Children (P4C)? In this book, the authors offer a surprising answer to this question: a practitioner's contemplation of the potentiality to speak, or what can be called infancy. Although essential to the experience of language, this most basic and profound capacity is often taken for granted or simply instrumentalized for the educational purposes of developing critical, caring, or creative thinking skills in the name of democratic citizenship. Against this kind of instrumentalization, the authors' radical reconceptualization of P4C focuses on the experience of infancy that can take place through collective inquiry. The authors' Philosophy for Infancy (P4I) emerges as a non-instrumental educational practice that does not dictate what to say or how to say it but rather turns attention to the fact of speaking. Referencing critical theorist Giorgio Agamben's extensive work on the theme of infancy, the authors philosophically engage the core writings of Matthew Lipman and Ann Sharp, foundational scholars in the P4C tradition, to rediscover this latent potentiality in the original P4C program that has yet to be developed. Not only does the book provide a new theoretical basis for appreciating what is philosophical in Lipman and Sharp's formulations of P4C, it also provides a unique elucidation of key concepts in Agamben's work-such as infancy, demand, rules, adventure, happiness, love, and anarchy-within a collective, educational practice. Throughout, the authors offer applications of P4I that will provide anchoring points to inspire educators to return to philosophical experimentation with language as a means without end.

Описание: This book looks at the rich means of text interpretation in seventeenth and eighteenth century Polish music, a relatively unknown phenomenon. The works of old Polish masters exhibit many ingenious and beautiful solutions in musical oration, which will appeal to wide circles of lovers and experts of old music. One of the fundamental components of baroque musical poetics was music-rhetorical figures, which were the main means of shaping expression – the base and quintessence of musical rhetoric. It was by means of figures that composers built the musical interpretation of a verbal text, developing pictorial, emphatic, onomatopoeic, symbolic, and allegorical structures that rendered emotions and meanings carried by the verbal level of a musical piece.
