Описание:

"The Grandin Papers is a compilation of some of my most important scientific papers with an emphasis on livestock facility design, the development of animal welfare auditing programs, and behavior of cattle and horses during handling. They are in chronological order. I chose the papers and book chapters that would most likely be of interest to the general public, policymakers, and people interested in farm animal welfare and behavior. This anthology will show how my thinking has evolved over a fifty-year career.”—Temple Grandin

Temple Grandin is famous for her groundbreaking approach to decoding animal behavior. Her 40 + years of experience in observing animals shines through in The Grandin Papers. Dr. Grandin’s professional training as a scientist and her amazing life as a person with autism has given her a perspective like that of no other expert in the field of animal science.

A professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University, Dr. Grandin is also a designer of livestock handling facilities. Curved chute and race systems she has designed for cattle are used worldwide, and her writings on the flight zone and other principles of grazing animal behavior have helped many people to reduce stress on their animals during handling.

She has also developed an objective scoring system for assessing the handling of cattle and pigs at meat plants. This scoring system is being used by many large corporations to improve animal welfare. Other areas of research are: cattle temperament, environmental enrichment for pigs, reducing dark cutters and bruises, bull fertility, training procedures, horse perception of novel objects, and effective stunning methods for cattle and pigs at meat plants. The Grandin Papers celebrate her storied career.

Her numerous awards include University Distinguished Professor, Colorado State University (2022); 2020, Named top 10 Best College Professors in the U.S., CEO Magazine; 2017, National Women's Hall of Fame; The Distinguished Alumni Medallion, National 4-H Council; 2012, Liberty Science Center Distinguished Humanitarian Award; 2011, American Humane Association - National Humanitarian Award - Pioneering Efforts that Reshaped Animal Welfare in the Livestock Industry; 2010, Inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame in Dallas, Texas; 2007, Dept. of Health and Humane Services, Secretary's Highest Award, Washington D.C.; 2002, British Society of Animal Science, Yorkshire England, Animal Welfare Award Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty in Animals; 1999, Founders Award, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Dr. Grandin is also a past member of the board of directors of the Autism Society of America. She lectures to parents and teachers throughout the U.S. on her experiences with autism, and her work has appeared in the New York Times, People, National Public Radio, and 20/20. Most recently she was one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people of the year. The HBO movie based on her life, starring Claire Danes, received seven Emmy Awards.

Описание: The dependency on animal biotechnology in livestock industries has been increased in the recent past. The livestock production research has witnessed remarkable developments on biotechnological methods to produce the elite animal breeds. The global animal food requirement has been steadily increasing, and animal production needs to be increased as per the global needs. This book covers various aspects of animal biotechnology such as, reproductive biotechnologies in sheep and goats, oogenesis and folliculogenesis and ovarian disorders. This book focusses the discussion on proteomics and metabolomics, and separate chapters were dedicated to discuss these topics. The proteomics studies of animal viruses were discussed in this book, and this would be helpful to understand animal viral pathogenesis. The applications of metabolomics in livestock were discussed with focus on data analysis, identification of unknown compounds. The purpose of this book is to provide the recent research trends, and convert all this information to usable guide to professionals, researchers and students who are working the research area of animal biotechnology.

Описание: This 2nd book provides fundamental concepts and recent applications of biotechnological methods, such as genetic selection, breeding methods and genetic engineering tools. Biotechnology has remarkably improved the productivity of livestock by increasing the reproduction efficiency and decreasing the generation time. The chapters detail the mechanisms of methods for animal reproduction and breeding methods. This book focus on the impact of minerals, steroids metabolic stress, nutritional stress and anti-nutritional factors on the livestock reproduction.

Описание: Most livestock in the United States currently live in cramped and unhealthy confinement, have few stable social relationships with humans or others of their species, and finish their lives by being transported and killed under stressful conditions. In Livestock, Erin McKenna allows us to see this situation and presents alternatives. She interweaves stories from visits to farms, interviews with producers and activists, and other rich material about the current condition of livestock. In addition, she mixes her account with pragmatist and ecofeminist theorizing about animals, drawing in particular on John Dewey’s account of evolutionary history, and provides substantial historical background about individual species and about human-animal relations. This deeply informative text reveals that the animals we commonly see as livestock have rich evolutionary histories, species-specific behaviors, breed tendencies, and individual variation, just as those we respect in companion animals such as dogs, cats, and horses. To restore a similar level of respect for livestock, McKenna examines ways we can balance the needs of our livestock animals with the environmental and social impacts of raising them, and she investigates new possibilities for humans to be in relationships with other animals. This book thus offers us a picture of healthier, more respectful relationships with livestock.

Описание: This book highlights the latest findings and techniques related to nutrition and feed efficiency in animal agriculture. It addresses the key challenges facing the nutrition industry to achieve high animal productivity with minimal environmental impact. The concept of smart nutrition involves the use of smart technologies in the feeding and management of livestock. The first chapters focus on advances in biological fields such as molecular agriculture and genotype selection, as well as technologies that enhance or enable the collection of relevant information. The next section highlights applications of smart nutrition in a variety of livestock systems, ranging from intensive indoor housing of broilers and pigs to extensive outdoor housing of cattle and sheep, and marine fish farms. Finally, because of the worldwide attention to this issue, the authors address the environmental consequences. This work, which takes a serious look at how nutrition can be used to improve sustainability in animal agriculture, is a key literature for readers in animal and veterinary sciences, the food industry, sustainability research, and agricultural engineering.
