Описание: The economic, social, political, and racial history of southwest Florida in the nineteenth century

For most of the nineteenth century, southwest Florida and the Peace River Valley remained a frontier as unknown to outsiders as the frontiers of the American West. In this book, Canter Brown, Jr. records the area’s economic, social, political, and racial history in an account of violence, passion, struggle, sacrifice, and determination.

The Peace River originates in Polk County’s Lake Hamilton, one of the many lakes that dot the heart of interior Florida. It flows past the towns of Bartow, Fort Meade, Bowling Green, Arcadia, Fort Ogden, and Punta Gorda, finally meeting the sea at Charlotte Harbor on Florida’s southwest Gulf Coast. No great cities line its banks; no commerce passes along its waters. Still, the river has bent and molded events of lasting significance to Florida and to the nation.

Using such primary materials as government records, manuscript collections, and newspapers published throughout the country, Brown documents the presence of Native Americans and African Americans in the area in the aftermath of the First Seminole War. He examines the Civil War and Reconstruction periods, paying particular attention to the Union/Confederate, Republican/Democratic split among the area’s residents. In the final sections of the book he describes the arrival of the railroad and the growth of towns, the phosphate boom, and consequences of the Great Freeze of 1895.

Throughout this account, the author identifies by name hundreds of persons who participated in these events, believing, he says, that the stories of individuals and families are a vital part of the area’s history. Florida’s Peace River Frontier will appeal to readers interested in Florida history, the Civil War and Reconstruction eras, African American history, and the history of the American frontier.

Описание: Previously unpublished letters offering a view of everyday life in north Florida before the Civil War

In 1840, twenty-three-year-old George Long Brown migrated from New Hampshire to north Florida, a region just emerging from the devastating effects of the Second Seminole War. This volume presents over seventy of Brown’s previously unpublished letters to illuminate day-to-day life in pre–Civil War Florida.

Brown’s personal and business correspondence narrates his daily activities and his views on politics, labor practices, slavery, fundamentalist religion, and local gossip. Having founded a successful mercantile establishment in Newnansville, Brown traveled the region as far as Savannah and Charleston, purchasing goods from plantations and strengthening social and economic ties in two of the region’s most developed cities. In the decade leading up to the Civil War, Brown married into one of the largest slaveholding families in the area and became involved in the slave trade. He also bartered with locals and mingled with the judges, lawyers, and politicians of Alachua County.

The Letters of George Long Brown provides an important eyewitness view of north Florida’s transformation from a subsistence and herding community to a market economy based on cotton, timber, and other crops, showing that these changes came about in part due to an increased reliance on slavery. Brown’s letters offer the first social and economic history of one of the most important yet little-known frontiers in the antebellum South.

Entitlement to `logic` is due to knowledge of the logos. The logos is religion and reasoning`s common origin.

Описание:

This collection focuses on the period from 1763 through the mid-nineteenth century. In Louisiana and the Floridas, the territorial ambitions of Britain, France, and Spain, as well as the new American Republic, led to a rapidly shifting series of political and cultural changes. The result in the region was the creation of complex hybrids of social mores, customs, and legal ideas and institutions. Of particular significance were the land claims that inevitably followed transfers of sovereignty and legal systems, the social and legal entrenchment of established elites and the institution of slavery, as well as a legacy of extra-legal violence and folk justice. The fluid borders of Louisiana and the Floridas, both East and West, exposed the flexible social identities and political loyalties of those who were settled there. Indeed, later accounts of the period and place have often misunderstood mixed motives, and contemporary rhetoric, of its subjects and citizens. Through a mix of different historiographical methods, a broad understanding of legal and social history, and the lens of plural comparative contexts, this collection tells us much about continuity and change in a critical transition period for the region, as well as for the modern Western nation-state and its increasingly common laws. xxxv, 297 pp. 10 illustrations. Описание: The story of how NASA transformed Florida's East Coast over half a century

Florida’s Space Coast tells the compelling story of America's half century in space exploration, from the successful launch of the first two-stage rocket in 1950 through the latest space shuttle missions of 2000. Told from the unique viewpoint of the people who built the Spaceport, this book shows how the space program transformed the east central Florida coast from a traditional citrus production and tourist area to one of the most influential high-tech centers in the nation.

Cape Canaveral was chosen as a missile launch site because of its many geographical advantages. However, in the early years of the space program, the area was far from an ideal place for NASA employees to raise their families. NASA brought in thousands of space-related workers, who, besides sending machines and men into space, had to meet the challenge of moving their families from urban environs to a rural southern county. This book engagingly recounts the parallel stories of the establishment of America's space program and its impact on the development of Brevard County.

Описание: For centuries, men dreamed of cutting a canal across the Florida peninsula. Intended to reduce shipping times, it was championed in the early twentieth century as a way to make the mostly rural state a center of national commerce and trade.Rejected by the Army Corps of Engineers as ""not worthy,"" the project received continued support from Florida legislators. Federal funding was eventually allocated and work began in the 1930s, but the canal quickly became a lightning rod for controversy.Steven Noll and David Tegeder trace the twists and turns of the project through the years, drawing on a wealth of archival and primary sources. Far from being a simplistic morality tale of good environmentalists versus evil canal developers, the story of the Cross Florida Barge Canal is a complex one of competing interests amid the changing political landscape of modern Florida. Thanks to the unprecedented success of environmental citizen activists, construction was halted in 1971, though it took another twenty years for the project to be canceled. Though the land intended for the canal was deeded to the state and converted into the Cross Florida Greenway, certain aspects of the dispute - including the fate of Rodman Reservoir - have yet to be resolved.

Описание:

The Mission Road: "And lo A light from Heaven shown down, And I beheld through the briars The Mission Road of the Franciscan friars." Early on the morning, April 6, 2013 while visiting the old Suwannee River crossing at Charles Spring, I saw this beam from the heavens shining as if to mark the trail for me. This digital image, entitled "Photograph of the Bellamy Road, Charles Spring, which is thought to be a part of the Old Spanish Trail," was placed in the Viva Florida 500 statewide time capsule and was sealed in the R. A. Gray Building, Tallahassee on December 31, 2013. It will be opened on Mar. 3, 2095.

The state of Florida is entering some significant anniversaries in its history. The year 2013 ushered in Viva Florida 500, a state effort to celebrate and promote the Spanish discovery of Florida and 500 years of Spanish influence upon it. The year 2015 marked the 450th birthday of St. Augustine, the oldest continuously occupied city in the United States. Consequently there has been a renewed interest in the most famous road in the state's history. Yes, Florida can boast as having the oldest city, but perhaps it also has the oldest road, for almost from the inception of St. Ausustine, inroads into the hinterland ensued. It is surprising that Florida's royal road, El Camino Real, has never been accurately defined until now.

Many have heard of the Old Spanish Trail, but have misleading ideas of its use and course. Often times, it is confused with the trail of the same name out West. Some think it extended from St. Augustine to Mexico, and, perhaps, the greatest error, is to associate it with U. S. Highway 90.

Robert Hurst takes the reader on a 465 mile journey through the eyes of early Spaniards and others across the marshes, swamps, rivers, natural bridges, and highlands of Florida from St. Augustine to Pensacola. He describes the methods of ferrying men, cargo and horses across the many rivers encountered. The reader will travel in the footsteps of Spaniards, English and American soldiers. He will experience the hardships of river crossings and encounter the various tribes of Native Americans, their villages and the Catholic missions along the way. He will experience the tired traveler's joy upon reaching the many remarkable springs along the trail. In short, this book is about the struggle of man and beast to penetrate the wild, untamed Florida wilderness of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The reader will discover the course and experience what travel was like along the real Old Spanish Trail.

Accompanying the text are appendices, photographs and maps. In the appendices, the reader will discover driving roads and hiking trails that replicate the experience of travel on this most famous and historic trail. The photographs illustrate the pristine parts of the existing trail, and the early and contemporary maps enable the reader to actually visit parts of the old trail.

This is a book that will not only interest the reader with historical and archaeological interests, but also the outdoor adventurer and the Florida heritage\ecotourist. The publication of this work is long overdue. Florida's oldest, most famous, and longest road has not received the attention it deserves. It is the author's hope that the attention this book will receive will help save what is left of one of Florida's most important heritage sites.
