Описание: The story of how NASA transformed Florida's East Coast over half a century

Florida’s Space Coast tells the compelling story of America's half century in space exploration, from the successful launch of the first two-stage rocket in 1950 through the latest space shuttle missions of 2000. Told from the unique viewpoint of the people who built the Spaceport, this book shows how the space program transformed the east central Florida coast from a traditional citrus production and tourist area to one of the most influential high-tech centers in the nation.

Cape Canaveral was chosen as a missile launch site because of its many geographical advantages. However, in the early years of the space program, the area was far from an ideal place for NASA employees to raise their families. NASA brought in thousands of space-related workers, who, besides sending machines and men into space, had to meet the challenge of moving their families from urban environs to a rural southern county. This book engagingly recounts the parallel stories of the establishment of America's space program and its impact on the development of Brevard County.

Описание: The economic, social, political, and racial history of southwest Florida in the nineteenth century

For most of the nineteenth century, southwest Florida and the Peace River Valley remained a frontier as unknown to outsiders as the frontiers of the American West. In this book, Canter Brown, Jr. records the area’s economic, social, political, and racial history in an account of violence, passion, struggle, sacrifice, and determination.

The Peace River originates in Polk County’s Lake Hamilton, one of the many lakes that dot the heart of interior Florida. It flows past the towns of Bartow, Fort Meade, Bowling Green, Arcadia, Fort Ogden, and Punta Gorda, finally meeting the sea at Charlotte Harbor on Florida’s southwest Gulf Coast. No great cities line its banks; no commerce passes along its waters. Still, the river has bent and molded events of lasting significance to Florida and to the nation.

Using such primary materials as government records, manuscript collections, and newspapers published throughout the country, Brown documents the presence of Native Americans and African Americans in the area in the aftermath of the First Seminole War. He examines the Civil War and Reconstruction periods, paying particular attention to the Union/Confederate, Republican/Democratic split among the area’s residents. In the final sections of the book he describes the arrival of the railroad and the growth of towns, the phosphate boom, and consequences of the Great Freeze of 1895.

Throughout this account, the author identifies by name hundreds of persons who participated in these events, believing, he says, that the stories of individuals and families are a vital part of the area’s history. Florida’s Peace River Frontier will appeal to readers interested in Florida history, the Civil War and Reconstruction eras, African American history, and the history of the American frontier.

Описание:

This comprehensive look at the first humans in Florida combines contemporary archaeology, the writings of early European explorers, and experiments to present a vivid history of the state's original inhabitants. Includes a photographic atlas of projectile points and pottery types as well as typical plant and animal remains uncovered at Florida archaeological sites.

The author replicated many primitive technologies during the writing of this book. He fashioned a prehistoric tool kit from stone, wood, bone, and shell, then used the implements to carve wood, twist palm fiber into twine and rope, make and decorate pottery, and weave fabric. The book shows detailed photos of these processes.

Описание: In 1840, twenty-three-year-old George Long Brown migrated from New Hampshire to north Florida, a region just emerging from the devastating effects of the Second Seminole War. This volume presents over seventy of Brown’s previously unpublished letters to illuminate day-to-day life in pre?Civil War Florida. Brown’s personal and business correspondence narrates his daily activities and his views on politics, labor practices, slavery, fundamentalist religion, and the local gossip. Having founded a successful mercantile establishment in Newnansville, Brown traveled the region as far as Savannah and Charleston, purchasing sea island cotton and other goods from plantations. He also bartered with locals and circulated among the judges, lawyers, and politicians of Alachua County. The Letters of George Long Brown provides an important eyewitness view of north Florida’s transformation from a subsistence and herding community to a market economy based on cotton, timber, and other crops, showing that these changes came about in part due to an increased reliance on slavery. Brown’s letters offer the first social and economic history of one of the most important yet little-known frontiers in the antebellum South. A volume in the series Contested Boundaries , edited by Gene Allen Smith.

Описание: The books in the Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series demonstrate the University Press of Florida’s long history of publishing Latin American and Caribbean studies titles that connect in and through Florida, highlighting the connections between the Sunshine State and its neighboring islands. Books in this series show how early explorers found and settled Florida and the Caribbean. They tell the tales of early pioneers, both foreign and domestic. They examine topics critical to the area such as travel, migration, economic opportunity, and tourism. They look at the growth of Florida and the Caribbean and the attendant pressures on the environment, culture, urban development, and the movement of peoples, both forced and voluntary. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series gathers the rich data available in these architectural, archaeological, cultural, and historical works, as well as the travelogues and naturalists’ sketches of the area in prior to the twentieth century, making it accessible for scholars and the general public alike. Описание:

The Mission Road: "And lo A light from Heaven shown down, And I beheld through the briars The Mission Road of the Franciscan friars." Early on the morning, April 6, 2013 while visiting the old Suwannee River crossing at Charles Spring, I saw this beam from the heavens shining as if to mark the trail for me. This digital image, entitled "Photograph of the Bellamy Road, Charles Spring, which is thought to be a part of the Old Spanish Trail," was placed in the Viva Florida 500 statewide time capsule and was sealed in the R. A. Gray Building, Tallahassee on December 31, 2013. It will be opened on Mar. 3, 2095.

The state of Florida is entering some significant anniversaries in its history. The year 2013 ushered in Viva Florida 500, a state effort to celebrate and promote the Spanish discovery of Florida and 500 years of Spanish influence upon it. The year 2015 marked the 450th birthday of St. Augustine, the oldest continuously occupied city in the United States. Consequently there has been a renewed interest in the most famous road in the state's history. Yes, Florida can boast as having the oldest city, but perhaps it also has the oldest road, for almost from the inception of St. Ausustine, inroads into the hinterland ensued. It is surprising that Florida's royal road, El Camino Real, has never been accurately defined until now.

Many have heard of the Old Spanish Trail, but have misleading ideas of its use and course. Often times, it is confused with the trail of the same name out West. Some think it extended from St. Augustine to Mexico, and, perhaps, the greatest error, is to associate it with U. S. Highway 90.

Robert Hurst takes the reader on a 465 mile journey through the eyes of early Spaniards and others across the marshes, swamps, rivers, natural bridges, and highlands of Florida from St. Augustine to Pensacola. He describes the methods of ferrying men, cargo and horses across the many rivers encountered. The reader will travel in the footsteps of Spaniards, English and American soldiers. He will experience the hardships of river crossings and encounter the various tribes of Native Americans, their villages and the Catholic missions along the way. He will experience the tired traveler's joy upon reaching the many remarkable springs along the trail. In short, this book is about the struggle of man and beast to penetrate the wild, untamed Florida wilderness of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The reader will discover the course and experience what travel was like along the real Old Spanish Trail.

Accompanying the text are appendices, photographs and maps. In the appendices, the reader will discover driving roads and hiking trails that replicate the experience of travel on this most famous and historic trail. The photographs illustrate the pristine parts of the existing trail, and the early and contemporary maps enable the reader to actually visit parts of the old trail.

This is a book that will not only interest the reader with historical and archaeological interests, but also the outdoor adventurer and the Florida heritage\ecotourist. The publication of this work is long overdue. Florida's oldest, most famous, and longest road has not received the attention it deserves. It is the author's hope that the attention this book will receive will help save what is left of one of Florida's most important heritage sites.

Описание: Florida has had many frontiers. Imagination, greed, missionary zeal, disease, war, and diplomacy have created its historical boundaries. Bodies of water, soil, flora and fauna, the patterns of Native American occupation, and ways of colonizing have defined Florida's frontiers. Paul E. Hoffman tells the story of those frontiers and how the land and the people shaped them during the three centuries from 1565 to 1860.
For settlers to La Florida, the American Southeast ca. 1500, better natural and human resources were found on the piedmont and on the western side of Florida's central ridge, while the coasts and coastal plains proved far less inviting. But natural environment was only one important factor in the settlement of Florida. The Spaniards, the British, the Seminole and Miccosuki, the Spaniards once again, and finally Americans constructed their Florida frontiers in interaction with the Native Americans who were present, the vestiges of earlier frontiers, and international events. The near-completion of the range and township surveys by 1860 and of the deportation of most of the Seminole and Miccosuki mark the end of the Florida frontier, though frontier-like conditions persisted in many parts of the state into the early 20th century.
For this major work of Florida history, Hoffman has drawn from a broad range of secondary works and from his intensive research in Spanish archival sources of the 16th and 17th centuries. Florida's Frontiers will be welcomed by students of history well beyond the Sunshine State.
