Описание:
Our goal in writing this book is to make lead women winemakers more visible. We believe that knowing their names, their rich stories, and their varied career pathways helps challenge and change the traditional societal view that women do not have a leading role in producing wine. Women's greater visibility, together with knowledge of their pathways, encourages other women to enter the field with the confidence that they, too, belong and can be successful as winemakers. Their greater visibility also makes women's presence and performance more normative for everyone working in the industry.
That said, in many ways this is a highly personal book that portrays details of the professional journeys that women winemakers shared in our one-on-one conversations with them. We have tried our best to capture their stories and journeys. We present their odysseys within a coherent framework built around career pathways and cultural histories and the changing views of women's place in the wine industry.
We met with nearly 150 winemakers in California and the wine regions of Champagne, France; Douro Valley, Portugal; Hawke's Bay, New Zealand; Piemonte, Italy; and Pened s, Priorat, and Rioja, Spain to learn about their experiences. We talked exclusively with lead winemakers, that is, winemakers who have the primary responsibility for producing wine at a winery or winemaking facility. These conversations were critical in providing the knowledge base for this book. With a few exceptions, we met with winemakers who are women.
The book has three main parts. The three chapters of Part I highlight trailblazing women winemakers. Its first two chapters focus on California's trailblazing women. In chapter 1, we describe the careers of the first eight women who entered the field of winemaking between 1965--the year the first woman, MaryAnn Graf, graduated from an enology program at UC Davis--and 1974, some nine years later. In the next chapter, we introduce the fifteen women who entered the field between 1975 and 1979, just before and after an important blind wine tasting in Paris brought significant attention to California wine. We also describe the career pathways of four women from this period. In chapter 3, we turn to six trailblazing women in the international regions we visited, providing information on the wine region and then describing their careers. Their professional journeys exemplify the four general career pathways to becoming a winemaker.
In Part II, we focus on the careers of women who entered the winemaking field after 1980. Each chapter is devoted to one of four designated career pathways and describes the odysseys of five or six women winemakers from California and international regions who followed that general pathway. This set of chapters includes women who are more established along with newer winemakers, all of whom are recognized for making wine of high quality.
The three chapters of Part III pertain to women's progress in the winemaking field. The findings of our three groundbreaking studies on women winemakers in California are the topic of chapter 8. The first study addresses the question, How many women? The second study assesses whether wines crafted by female winemakers are being recognized in the industry. The third study investigates women's progress in the field.
As reported in the first study described in chapter 8, we learned that some 10 percent of the wineries in the state have lead winemakers who are women. Chapter 9 provides a summary of the advice for aspiring winemakers offered by the women we interviewed in California and internationally. In chapter 10, our closing chapter, we comment on the value of career pathways in furthering women winemakers' progress.

Описание: From the author of The Physician and Shaman now comes this story of a young man-the grapes he grows, the wine he fashions, the women he loves, and his struggle against an evil that seeks to destroy him. Already an international bestseller. Josep Alvarez is a young man in the tiny grape-growing village of Santa Eul lia, in northern Spain, where his father grows black grapes that are turned into cheap vinegar. Joseph loves the agricultural life, but he is the second son, and his father's vineyard will be inherited by his brother Donat, the firstborn. Josep needs to keep his hands in the soil. He yearns for a job growing grapes and for an opportunity to marry Teresa Gallego. In Madrid, an assassination plot, conceived against the political leader of Spain by men of wealth and power, creates a storm of intrigue that sucks into its vortex a group of innocent young farm workers in Santa Eul lia. How Josep's life is changed drastically by these events, and how, ironically, they gradually turn him into an inspired vintner with an evolving vision of life, is the fascinating story of The Winemaker. "Conciseness is Gordon's greatest skill. He unfolds a plot branching out far, until a panoramic view of a world past emerges-as vivid as the great realistical novels of the 19th century." -Welt am Sonntag (Germany) "So suspenseful that you cannot put it down." -Leipziger Volkszeitung (Germany) "Gordon's healthy obsession with research, his ability to create extremely realistic characters, and that innate literary talent of his for which there's no explanation are certain to make this book another best seller." -Elle Magazine (Spain) "A wonderful book. Enjoy it with a good bottle of wine." -B cher (Germany) Noah Gordon has had outstanding international success. The Physician, soon to be a motion picture, has been called a modern classic, and booksellers at the Madrid Book Fair voted it "one of the 10 best-loved books of all time." Shaman was awarded the James Fenimore Cooper Prize for historical fiction. Both of these books, and five of the author's other novels-The Rabbi, The Death Committee, The Jerusalem Diamond, Matters of Choice, and The Winemaker-are published in digital formats by Barcelona eBooks and Open Road Integrated Media. Gordon's novel, The Last Jew, will also be published digitally in the near future. He lives outside of Boston with his wife, Lorraine Gordon.

Описание: From crushing grapes to bottling wine, this handbook enables the home winemaker to make decisions about ingredients, equipment, and the winemaking process. It offers instructions, which lead both novice and advanced winemakers through the procedures, including selecting and working with new equipment, and analysing the product.
Winner of the 2013 New York Book Show Award in Scholarly/Professional Book Design From Ernest and Julio Gallo to Francis Ford Coppola, Italians have shaped the history of California wine. More than any other group, Italian immigrants and their families have made California viticulture one of America’s most distinctive and vibrant achievements, from boutique vineyards in the Sonoma hills to the massive industrial wineries of the Central Valley. But how did a small group of nineteenth-century immigrants plant the roots that flourished into a world-class industry? Was there something particularly “Italian” in their success?
In this fresh, fascinating account of the ethnic origins of California wine, Simone Cinotto rewrites a century-old triumphalist story. He demonstrates that these Italian visionaries were not skilled winemakers transplanting an immemorial agricultural tradition, even if California did resemble the rolling Italian countryside of their native Piedmont. Instead, Cinotto argues that it was the wine-makers’ access to “social capital,” or the ethnic and familial ties that bound them to their rich wine-growing heritage, and not financial leverage or direct enological experience, that enabled them to develop such a successful and influential wine business. Focusing on some of the most important names in wine history—particularly Pietro Carlo Rossi, Secondo Guasti, and the Gallos—he chronicles a story driven by ambition and creativity but realized in a complicated tangle of immigrant entrepreneurship, class struggle, racial inequality, and a new world of consumer culture.
Skillfully blending regional, social, and immigration history, Soft Soil, Black Grapes takes us on an original journey into the cultural construction of ethnic economies and markets, the social dynamics of American race, and the fully transnational history of American wine.
