: What is Violent Communication?
If "violent" means acting in ways that result in hurt or harm, then much of how we communicate--judging others, bullying, having racial bias, blaming, finger pointing, discriminating, speaking without listening, criticizing others or ourselves, name-calling, reacting when angry, using political rhetoric, being defensive or judging who's "good/bad" or what's "right/wrong" with people--could indeed be called "violent communication."
What is Nonviolent Communication? Nonviolent Communication is the integration of four things:
- Consciousness: a set of principles that support living a life of compassion, collaboration, courage, and authenticity

- Language: understanding how words contribute to connection or distance

- Communication: knowing how to ask for what we want, how to hear others even in disagreement, and how to move toward solutions that work for all

- Means of influence: sharing "power with others" rather than using "power over others"
Nonviolent Communication serves our desire to do three things:
- Increase our ability to live with choice, meaning, and connection

- Connect empathically with self and others to have more satisfying relationships

- Sharing of resources so everyone is able to benefit

: This edited volume represents a collective contribution to the current debates on developing university research capacity. The chapters in this volume offer empirical case studies from post-Soviet countries which share a common history, common policies and practices of higher education. These commonalities make the regional focus meaningful and analytically valid. At the same time, the case studies demonstrate divergence from the shared Soviet tradition and offer historical, sociological, and political analyses of how and in what ways universities in former Soviet countries internalised their research mission and developed the capacity to carry out this mission. This volume is the first of its kind to examine national and institutional resources, political will, and individual agency to understand how these influenced universities motivation, expertise, and opportunities of undertaking research since the early 1990s, and how universities changed their structures and practices under these influences. The book will appeal to students and scholars in the fields of education, sociology, political science, and economics.

This is a student-friendly publication, offering aids such as definitions of key terms, colourful infographics, case studies and end-of-chapter review questions. Theres a companion website, too, and a password-protected website for instructors."Philip Kemp, Times Higher Education Media Today uses convergence as a lens that puts students at the center of the profound changes in the 21st century media world. Through the convergence lens they learn to think critically about the role of media today and what these changes mean for their lives presently and in the future. The books media systems approach helps students to look carefully at how media is created, distributed, and exhibited in the new world that the digital revolution has created. In this way, Media Today goes beyond the traditional mass communication textbooks focus on consuming media, to give students an insiders perspective on how media businesses operate. How exactly does Google profit from web searches? What will a magazine look like five years from now? Informative and engaging, Media Today, Fifth Edition, is characterized by its focus on: Convergence: In addition to separate chapters on the Internet and the Video Games industry, coverage of convergence and its impact is incorporated into every chapter. Consumer Education: Media Literacy questions ask students to consider their roles as a media consumer and potential media creator. Comprehensive Media Industry Coverage: Historical timelines in the print book and on the companion website track the development of each media industry, giving students an overview of a particular industry at a glance. Contemporary, Student-friendly Examples: New culture and media boxes help students think about the impact of media industries on their own lives and globally. Joseph Turowwho has been teaching Intro to Mass Communication for well over a decadedemonstrates the many ways that media convergence and the pervasiveness of the Internet have blurred distinctions between and among various media. From newspapers to video games or social networking to mobile platforms, Media Today prepares students to live in the digital world of media.

: What do search engines do? And what should they do? These questions seem relatively simple but are actually urgent social and ethical issues. The influence of Google's search engine is enormous. It does not only shape how Internet users find pages on the World Wide Web, but how we think as individuals, how we collectively remember the past, and how we communicate with one another.

This book explores the impact of search engines within contemporary digital culture, focusing on the social, cultural, and philosophical influence of Google. Using case studies like Google's role in the rise of fake news, instances of sexist and misogynistic Autocomplete suggestions, and search queries relating to LGBTQ+ values, it offers original evidence to intervene practically in existing debates. It also addresses other understudied aspects of Google's influence, including the profound implications of its revenue generation for wider society.

In doing this, this important book helps to evaluate the real cost of search engines on an individual and global scale.

: In our post-truth world, tapping into people's emotions has proved far more effective than rational argument - and, as Philip Seargeant argues in this illuminating and entertaining book, the most powerful tool for manipulating emotions is a gripping narrative.

From Trump's America to Brexit Britain, weaving a good story, featuring fearless protagonists, challenging quests against seemingly insurmountable odds, and soundbite after soundbite of memorable dialogue has been at the heart of political success. So does an understanding of the art of storytelling help explain today's successful political movements? Can it translate into a blueprint for victory at the ballot box?

The Art of Political Storytelling
looks at how stories are created, shared and contested, illuminating the pivotal role that persuasive storytelling plays in shaping our understanding of the political world we live in. By mastering the tools and tricks of narrative, and evaluating the language and rhetorical strategies used to craft and enact them, Seargeant explains how and why today's combination of new media, populism and partisanship makes storytelling an ever more important part of the persuasive and political process. In doing so, the book offers an original and compelling way of understanding the chaotic world of today's politics.
