Описание: In the spirit of Paulo Freire, this inspiring book deconstructs many of the 'gods' that define contemporary life, then offers hope through sources of traditional wisdom. It addresses important contemporary discourses in the political and social sciences in ways that are relevant to the personal and professional lives of teachers at all levels of educational practice. David G. Smith discusses the impacts on teachers' lives of neoconservativism, neoliberalism, the New Marxism, the emerging paradigm of Deep Politics, global Wisdom traditions, and more - and he reveals how teachers can creatively stand with or against these streams of influence. By clearly relating larger theoretical discussions in the social sciences to the policies and practices of teaching, Smith builds upon Freire's legacy. He also reaches beyond debates in Western scholarship, and accesses new theory from the global "South", from Buddhist and NeoConfucian traditions as well as the new African Renaissance stream known as Unhu/Ubuntu. This is a powerful work of educational theory and philosophy that contains useful advice for educators wishing to push back against conformity.

Scotland's Curriculum for Excellence offers an example of a different approach to national curriculum development. It combines what are claimed to be the best features of top-down and bottom-up approaches to curriculum development, and provides an indication of the broad qualities that school education should promote rather than a detailed description of curriculum content. Advocates of the approach argue that it provides central guidance for schools and maintains national standards whilst at the same time allowing schools and teachers the flexibility to take account of local needs when designing programmes of education. Reinventing the Curriculum uses Scotland's Curriculum for Excellence as a rich case study, analysing the strengths and weaknesses of this approach to curriculum design and development, and exploring the implications for curriculum planning and development around the world.
Описание: This book explores teacher professional development as a situated, socio-political practice. Drawing on cross-national case studies, and on the theories of Pierre Bourdieu, the study reveals the inherently political nature of professional development practices, showing them to be the product of tensions within and between competing policy, research and work pressures.

Описание: Choice Outstanding Academic Title of 2017 For more than three decades, Kathleen Cash has lived and worked with impoverished people, learning about their lives. Listening to them talk about their feelings of shame, Cash heard how people suffered from being unable to change what was happening to them--HIV infection, sexual and domestic violence, violence toward children, and environmental degradation. She saw that many interventions lacked emotional and cultural integrity and thus did little to alleviate these hardships. So Cash went outside the conventional approaches to health promotion and social justice and devised a community narrative practice, a strategy for engaging people through storytelling. From numerous ethnographic interviews, she pieced together cultural stories in a way that resonated with community people and revealed the paradoxes in their suffering. Cash recruited local artists to illustrate the stories in a form resembling a graphic novel and distributed these booklets for community discussion. (This book includes excerpts from these illustrated stories.)
In Thailand, Bangladesh, Haiti, Uganda, and the United States, people learned to talk about forbidden subjects and say what they could never say before. They stood up to each other, reconciled, and made health-seeking decisions. By helping others, they repaired themselves. In cathartic conversations they acknowledged shame, which led to acts of courage and generosity.

Powell draw on research in both the communication and education disciplines, and provide useful strategies for improving teaching practices alongside theoretical models regarding diversity in the classroom. Much of the information found in this text is also inspired by the authors' direct experience in schools and from the experience they have gleaned from other first-line instructors as well as from parents and children.
Among the many updates to this Third Edition are:
Expanded coverage of students with diverse needs
Discussion on working effectively with parents
Coverage of cultural influences and the impact of race and ethnicity on disciplinary actions
Examination of the role of social media and its impact on instructional communication
The increase of educational technology use.
Teachers and scholars in the communication and education fields will find this text practical and valuable for their teaching efforts, and it is appropriate for instructional communication courses in both disciplines.

Описание: In this book about communities of practice in the international, higher education sector, the authors articulate the theoretical foundations of communities of practice (CoPs), research into their application in higher education, leadership roles and how CoPs sustain and support professional learning. Research demonstrates that communities of practice build professional and personal links both within and across faculty, student services and administrative and support units. This book describes how community of practice members may be physically co-located and how social media can be used to connect members across geographically diverse locations. It positions higher education communities of practice within the broader community of practice and social learning literature, and articulates the importance of community of practice leadership roles, and the growing focus on the use of social media for community of practice implementation. The multiple perspectives provide higher education leaders, academic and professional staff with the means to establish, or reflect on existing CoPs, by sharing insights and critical reflections on their implementation strategies, practical guidelines and ideas on how community of practice’s theoretical underpinnings can be tailored to the higher education context.
