Описание: Immunology has made significant progress in the past decade, driven forward by rapidly advancing technology and a renewed interest in the vast realm of innate immunity. The receptors that mediate these functions are at the front lines of both protective and regulative roles of the immune system.  In Immune Receptors: Methods and Protocols, expert researchers present a variety of experimental approaches to the characterization of immune receptors and the cell biology that mediates their functions.  These include imaging techniques that aim to understand receptor localization and trafficking, techniques to measure receptor-ligand interactions, strategies to identify novel ligands and methods to analyze downstream receptor signaling, as well as strategies for genomic and proteomic characterization of receptor repertoires. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology™ series format, chapters include introductions to their respective subjects, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, Immune Receptors: Methods and Protocols offers technical descriptions and protocols that will be useful both to investigators who are interested in carrying out these procedures and to those who seek a deeper understanding of the bench science that lies behind the immunology literature.

Описание: Natural Killer (NK) cells are large granular lymphocytes of the innate immune system. They are widespread throughout the body, being present in both lymphoid organs and non-lymphoid peripheral tissues. NK cells are involved in direct innate immune reactions against viruses, bacteria, parasites and other triggers of pathology, such as malignant transformation, all of which cause stress in affected cells. Importantly, NK cells also link the innate and adaptive immune responses, contributing to the initiation of adaptive immune responses and executing adaptive responses using the CD16 FcgRIIIA immunoglobulin Fc receptor. Such responses are mediated through two major effector functions, the direct cytolysis of target cells and the production of cytokines and chemokines. The authors focus here on the nature of recognition events by NK cells and address how these events are integrated to trigger these distinct and graded effector functions.

Описание: On occasion, the innate immune system is referred to as the "primitive" immune system. On the contrary, the innate immune system has had time to achieve a level of refinement that is nothing short of dazzling, and a modicum of respect is at long last due.

Описание: A NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Membrane Receptors, Dynamics and Energetics" was held in order to consider recent developments in membrane receptor research. Presentations and discussions focussed on signal transduction mechanisms (e.g. 2 G-proteins, transducin, Ca ]) and on the structure and func- tion of some selected receptors (i.e. low density lipoprotein receptor, acetylcholine receptor, growth factor receptors, toxin receptors). These topics were put in the larger con- text of current knowledge on the structure and function of membranes; connections between different fields of research were established by in-depth discussions of energy transduc- tion and transport mechanisms. Specialized membrane systems were discussed including chloroplasts and chromaffin granules. Functional relationships with specific lipids (e.g. phospho- inositides, lipid A) were major topics of discussion. This book presents the content of the major lectures and a selection of most relevant posters presented during the course of the Institute. This book is intended to make the proceedings of the Institute accessible to a larger audience and to offer a comprehensive account of those topics of re- ceptor, membrane and bioenergetics research that were at the center of interest during our stay on the Island of Spetsai from August 17 to 30, 1986.

Описание: In the last two decades, our knowledge on regulatory peptides and their cognate receptors, most of which are members of the seven transmembrane receptor families, has increased enormously. Regulatory peptides are small proteins which, besides their hormonal functions in regulating cellular metabolism in various tissues, may also act as neurotransmitters, and thus they often carry the prefix "neuro". Many of the cognate receptors involved in transducing the peptidergic signal across the cell membrane via a family of G proteins exist in multiple forms, the number of which frequently exceeds that of the corresponding peptide ligands. In this book, various peptide-receptor systems are discussed, e.g. CRF, somatostatin, TRH, opioid peptides, vasopressin, and oxytocin. It also discusses new strategies such as "reverse physiology" to uncover new peptides and orphan receptors.

Описание: Here is an up-to-date review of important new methods and results in anti-idiotypes, receptors, and molecular mimicry. It begins with a discussion of the theoretical background of the anti-idiotypic network, it's role in the regulation of immune response, and the physical characteristics of anti-idiotypic antibodies. It then goes on to explore many exciting applications in such areas as insulin action, thyroid cell function, the neurosciences, cardiology, virology, pharmacology, and reproduction.
