In recent years, a tremendous amount of effort has been focused on better understanding the fundamentals of Alzheimer's disease (AD) to facilitate early and accurate diagnosis and appropriately targeted therapeutic treatments. Alzheimer's Disease: Targets for New Clinical, Diagnostic, and Therapeutic Strategies provides a detailed synopsis of the current state of the art of diagnostics and therapeutics and identifies emerging technologies and molecules that show promise in the management and treatment of AD.
With contributions from experts drawn from academia, clinical practice, and the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, the book explores:
The basis of AD and the role of Aβ oligomers in development of disease
Existing and emerging in vitro biomarker-based methodologies for the diagnosis of AD, focusing on genetic, biochemical, and conformational strategies
In vivo imaging diagnostic approaches
Evolving diagnostic criteria, health regulatory guidelines, biomarkers in clinical trials, and available and emerging therapies
Recent progress in small-molecule disease-modifier drug discovery efforts for AD, specifically in the areas of Aβ, tau, and emerging neuroprotective/neurorepair approaches
How a case study of AD raises issues regarding clinical and pathologic criteria, risk factors, and the amyloid hypothesis
The molecular conformational factors that govern the pathogenicity of aggregating proteins, and how these factors could represent new targets for disease-modifying therapies
The latest epidemiological, pathological, biochemical, and behavioral studies that may shed some light on the risk of developing AD and similar dementias after traumatic brain injury
Examining current hypotheses and suggesting possible new approaches to therapeutic clinical applications, this volume paves the way for a robust pipeline of therapeutics to combat not only AD, but a whole host of other neurodegenerative diseases.

Описание: A lot of research on biomarkers for Alzheimer is being done in the last few decades. The aim of these studies is to find some method to ease the diagnosis of Alzheimers as early as possible. Such methods are a range of blood or CSF tests on one hand and several types of neuroimaging scans on the other. Many of the images coming both from laboratory and neuroimaging are very visual and illustrative. These images, accompanied by a short description, can perfectly explain the main results and usefulness of every biomarker. The objective of this book would be to summarize the most important studies made in this field. Few publications have systematically compiled results on this topic and only one as an atlas. Readers would be interested in this publication because it allows reviewing the current status of research by handily visualizing the results.

Описание: This volume contains the proceedings of the ninth "Colloque medecine et recherche" of the Fondation IPSEN devoted to research on Alzheimer's disease. This symposium was held in Lyon on June 21, 1993, on the topic, "Amyloid Protein Precursors in Development, Aging and Alzheimer's Disease". The choice of this venue and of this particular subject was not a matter of chance. As far as the history of medicine and neurology is concerned, Lyon is doubtless one of the most famous cities in France and the F ondation IPSEN had to organize one of its meetings in this city which has been regarded for centuries as a major crossroads. Regarding the topic, the amyloid story is at the center of the debate in the field of Alzheimer's studies. For nearly 10 years, "alzheimerology" has more or less been intertwined with "amyloidology". The purification and the sequencing of the beta/ A4 peptide in amyloid congophilic angiopathy (Glenner and Wong 1984) and in Alzheimer's disease (Masters et al. 1985) were the first steps toward the numerous successes realised in the last few years. The discovery of the amyloid precursor protein (APP), the localisation of its gene on chromosome 21 and the sequencing of its cDNA in 1987 (Kang et al. 1987; Goldgaber et al. 1987; Robakis et al.
