Описание:

Asian/American Scholars of Education: 21st Century Pedagogies, Perspectives, and Experiences shares the knowledge and travails of Asian/American luminaries in the field of education. This unique collection of essays acknowledges the struggle that Asian/American Education scholars have faced when it comes to being regarded as legitimate scholars deserving of endowed or distinguished status. The chapter contributors in this volume include former doctoral students, children, prot?g?s, and colleagues of the Asian/American endowed and distinguished professors featured in the book: A. Lin Goodwin, Suzanne SooHoo, Kioh Kim, Krishna Bista, George Sugai, Yali Zou, Yong Zhao, Robert Teranishi, Asha K. Jitendra, Shouping Hu, and Ming Ming Chiu. Asian/American Scholars of Education makes an important impact by asking: Why are there so few Asian/American endowed and distinguished faculty members in education?

Описание: This volume introduces theory-to-practice-based critical pedagogy grounded in Paulo Freire's scholarship to language and literacy learning settings. The chapters present authentic experiences of teacher-scholars, feature real-world examples and activities ready for implementation in the classroom, and provide nuanced guidance for future teachers. The examples and activities from teacher-scholars place critical pedagogy at the heart of classroom contexts and cover key topics, including place-based pedagogy, contemplative pedagogy, technology within the classroom, and translingual and multimodal paradigms.

The chapters include further readings and discussion questions that challenge assumptions and promote deeper reflection, and can be modified for different teaching contexts. This practical volume is essential reading for students and scholars in TESOL and critical pedagogy.

Описание: The Ivory Tower is and can often be a lonely place for faculty of color. Social injustices run deep and are entrenched within academia. Faculty of color (FOC), more specifically Black and Hispanic, often lament about the ‘Black/Brown’ tax that frequently takes its toll both personally and professionally, and pushes them out of the academy. Similar to trends in P?12 settings, educators of color in postsecondary contexts represent less than 10% of the profession. In essence, we are an anomaly and the implications of this are clear and dire, as evidenced by persistent achievement, access, and expectation gaps within the academy.Scholars of color (SOC), at all stages, but particularly during doctoral training, frequently struggle to not just survive, but to thrive, in the academy. Too many fail to earn their doctoral degree, with many wearing the All But Dissertation (ABD) as a badge of honor. Although ABD is not a degree, many scholars of color receive inadequate mentoring, often substandard in comparison to the hand?holding White students receive, which leaves far too many doctoral students of color lost, bewildered, angry, indignant, and defeated. This righteous indignation is justified, but excused away using the myth of meritocracy and colorblind notions of success; followed by a myriad of problems steeped with victim blaming, as noted in the classic Presumed Incompetent: The Intersections of Race and Class for Women in Academia (Gutiérrez y Muhs, Niemann, González, & Harris, 2012). The aforementioned work was not the first treatise on higher education and how the non?status quo, along with those grappling with oppression and double standards, experience the profession called higher education. Moreover, The Chilly Climate (Sandler, Silverberg, & Hall, 1996) report, which focused on females, was also telling, but not enough was addressed and disclosed about females of color, until version two. But these issues do not stop with females of color, but instead, extend to all faculty of color.R.A.C.E. Mentoring, a social media Facebook group, with several subgroups (see Figures 1 and 2) was created by Donna Y. Ford, Michelle Trotman Scott, and Malik S. Henfield in 2013, to tackle the numerous thorny and contentious issues and challenges in higher education. We began by intentionally attending to the needs of students enrolled at mostly White universities, as well as those who attended historically Black colleges and universities, while keeping the unique nuances and challenges of each setting in mind. We wanted scholars of color to thrive in both. Fondly and affectionately called RM, our charge and challenge is to affirm the dignity and worth of scholars of color. Additionally, we recognize that there are scholars outside of academe, and their contributions as well to impact and affect change for Black and Brown people inside and outside of academe need to be acknowledged. These scholars are community organizers, activists, P?12 teachers, and families. It truly takes a village...

Описание: Canada is more diverse than ever before, and the application of transcultural literacies in Canadian classrooms is needed for the successful growth of students and teachers alike. In this edited volume, world-renowned educators offer unique perspectives on the impact of race, culture, and identity in the classroom. With an interdisciplinary approach, this book investigates not only how teachers can design learning spaces to accommodate diverse students, but also how they can build literacy programs to complement and further develop the varied strengths, skills, and experiences of those students. Educators will learn to better understand the trajectories of immigration: how immigrant students often enter the classroom after living in multiple places, acquiring several languages, and forming memories of places that are different from Canadian socio-cultural and geographic landscapes.Examining the roles of both teachers and students in transcultural language learning, this text will benefit students in teacher education programs and in graduate-level education studies that focus on language and literacy, diversity, and global citizenship.Featurescontextualizes places and spaces that are very different from the geographic and socio-cultural terrain of Canada, preparing educators to design learning spaces for students who have such varied experiencesidentifies how educators can build literacy programs around the strengths, linguistic diversity, and experiences of their studentsincludes pedagogical features such as chapter previews and visual organizers that introduce students to the ideas and concepts presented in each chapter, further recommend readings and websites, and guiding discussion questions

Описание: This important volume brings together key writings from one of the most influential education scholars of our time. In this collection of her seminal essays on critical race theory (CRT), Gloria Ladson-Billings seeks to clear up some of the confusion and misconceptions that education researchers have around race and inequality. Beginning with her groundbreaking work with William Tate in the mid-1990s up to the present day, this book discloses both a personal and intellectual history of CRT in education. The essays are divided into three areas: Critical Race Theory, Issues of Inequality, and Epistemology and Methodologies.
