Описание: In this volume, John Cook provides a foundational analysis of the Aramaic text of Ezra and Daniel. The analysis is distinguished by the detailed yet comprehensive attention paid to the text. Cooks analysis is a convenient pedagogical and reference tool that explains the form and syntax of the biblical text, offers guidance for deciding between competing semantic analyses, engages important text-critical debates, and addresses questions relating to the Aramaic text that are frequently overlooked or ignored by standard commentaries. Beyond serving as a succinct and accessible analytic key, Aramaic Ezra and Daniel also reflects the most up-to-date advances in scholarship on grammar and linguistics. This handbook proves itself an indispensable tool for anyone committed to a deep reading of the biblical text.

Daniel Evokes Isaiah: Allusive Characterization of Foreign Rule in the Hebrew-Aramaic Book of Daniel

Описание: Lester argues here that the book of Daniel contains a complex but poetically unified narrative. This can be identified through certain narrative qualities, including the allusion to Isaiah throughout, which uniquely contributes to the narrative arc. The narrative begins with the inauguration of foreign rule over Israel, and concludes with that rule’s end. Each stage of the book's composition casts that foreign rule in terms ever-more-reminiscent of Isaiah's depiction of Assyria. That enemy is first conscripted by God to punish Israel, but then arrogates punitive authority to itself until ultimately punished in its turn and destroyed. Each apocalypse in the book of Daniel carries forward, in its own way, that allusive characterization. Lester thus argues that an allusive poetics can be investigated as an intentional rhetorical trope in a work for which the concept of “author” is complex; that a narrative criticism can incorporate a critical understanding of composition history. The “Daniel” resulting from this inquiry depicts Daniel’s 2nd-century Jewish reader not as suffering punishment for breaking covenant with God, but as enduring in covenant faithfulness the last days of the “Assyrian” arrogator’s violent excesses. This narrative problematizes any simplistic narrative conceptions of biblical Israel as ceaselessly rebellious, lending a unique note to conversations about suffering and theodicy in the Hebrew Bible, and about anti-Judaic habits in Christian reading of the Hebrew Bible.

Classifying the Aramaic Texts from Qumran: A Statistical Analysis of Linguistic Features

Описание: Analysis of the scroll fragments of the Qumran Aramaic scrolls has been plentiful to date. Their shared characteristics of being written in Aramaic, the common language of the region, not focused on the Qumran Community, and dating from the 3rd century BCE to the 1st century CE have enabled the creation of a shared identity, distinguishing them from other fragments found in the same place at the same time. This classification, however, could yet be too simplistic as here, for the first time, John Starr applies sophisticated statistical analyses to newly available electronic versions of these fragments. In so doing, Starr presents a potential new classification which comprises six different text types which bear distinctive textual features, and thus is able to narrow down the classification both temporally and geographically. Starr's re-visited classification presents fresh insights into the Aramaic texts at Qumran, with important implications for our understanding of the many strands that made up Judaism in the period leading to the writing of the New Testament.

Описание:

The Messianic Aleph Tav Interlinear Scriptures (MATIS-NT) Acts - Revelation, both Red Letter and Bold Black Editions, are the most unique Interlinear Study Bibles of the New Testament in the world. This work is a "Study Bible" and unique because it is the first large print, true interlinear edition of the New Testament to combine both Dr. John W. Etheridge's Eastern Aramaic Peshitta (22 books) and Dr. James Murdock's Peshitto (5 books) in both Aramaic and Hebrew font, with proper pronunciation, in comparison with the Greek English translation, word by word, all in true interlinear form. This is the first time the Aramaic Peshitta and Peshitto has ever been in true interlinear form, word by word. The Aramaic translation was provided by Lars Lindgren of Dukhrana.com website, and incorporates in the interlinear the pronunciation of the Aramaic, which is also unique and was created and provided by Lars Lindgren and used with his permission... all of which comes under copyright protection.
The purpose of MATIS-NT is to provide a unique Study Bible whereby each Aramaic word and verse could be studied by comparing it to the Greek in an effort to obtain a deeper understanding of what the apostles were trying to express and the differences between the two English translations of the New Testament. MATIS-NT English translation began with the public domain version of the 1987 KJV and removed all the old English for easier reading from the interlinear portion. MATIS is also unique in regard to the Hebrew and Aramaic in the New Testament verses running in sequence from left to right with the English translation, while the Hebrew/Aramaic individual words are written properly from right to left. This combination is unique but makes it easier for beginners to study the Aramaic language in comparison to its English translation. The First Volume of MATIS is The TORAH, with the Strong's Hebrew Dictionary. Volume Two, The WRITINGS, Volume Three, The PROPHETS and Volume Four, MATIS-NT The GOSPELS, with the Strong's Greek Dictionary and Volume Five, Acts - Revelation has a limited Aramaic Lexical New Testament Dictionary. MATIS Study Bibles also furthers the journey of the study of the Aleph/Tav Character Symbol by revealing thousands of words that originally incorporated this symbol in Aramaic, and apparently for good reason
The entire collection of the 5 Volume set of MATIS Study Bibles is truly the perfect gift for the believer who is interested in studying the Biblical Hebrew Old Testament Tanakh and the Aramaic with the Greek B'rit Chadashah (New Testament) and desires to obtain a deeper understanding of what the originators, as well as our Creator was trying to express.

Описание: This volume discusses the Hebrew term 'eres' which is prominently used in Creation and Land theologies in the Bible. Uemura examines whether the term signifies the 'earth' or the 'Land' and traces the historical development of its uses in relation to these two meanings. He offers a survey of all of the occurrences of this term, categorizes them, and discusses the problematic instances in all of the surviving Hebrew and Aramaic texts. Uemura's examination begins with an analysis of the terms under discussion literally and stylistically in order to discern the semantic field of each term, as well as to determine its stylistic idiomatic uses. He discusses the uses of these two terms in ancient non-Jewish circumstances using materials taken from Phoenician, New Punic, Moabite and Aramaic inscriptions, as well as from an Aramaic papyri from Egypt and Nabataean papyri from Nahal Hever. The aim of this study is to show a cultural background of uses of these terms and Uemura sheds light on the biblical worldview in the Graeco-Roman period.

Описание: For many years, scholars have noted that post-biblical Hebrew and Aramaic may have influenced some of the renderings in the ancient Greek versions of the Hebrew Bible, but examination of this has usually been done only in passing with little or no discussion and scant evidence. Seulgi L. Byun examines the ancient Greek version of Isaiah, commonly referred to as LXX (Septuagint) Isaiah, and examines a number of possible cases in depth in order to determine the degree to which semantic change within Hebrew, as well as the spread of Aramaic already in the Second Temple period, may have influenced the translator. The book begins with an overview of key issues (semantic change; the development (or non-development) of the Hebrew language; previous scholarship; issues in the study of LXX Isaiah; and methodological considerations). This is followed by four larger sections representing various categories of examples where post-biblical Hebrew or Aramaic may have influenced renderings in the text, each offering specific examples. The first section contains examples where post-biblical Hebrew may have influenced LXX Isaiah; the second section offers examples of Aramaic influence; the third section addresses examples where the influence is not clear (possibly both post-biblical Hebrew and Aramaic); and the fourth section discusses the possibility of word manipulation - cases where the translator of LXX Isaiah ‘manipulated’ the Hebrew with a post-biblical Hebrew or Aramaic meaning/word in mind.
