Описание: This book explores the role of culture in explaining suicidal behaviour. Explanations based on the genes and physiology of individuals, and theories based on psychological variables have difficulty explaining the suicide rate of societies, as well as the occurrence of suicide in individuals. This book illustrates the strong role of culture in determining the suicide rate of societies by looking at the role of the major religion of a society, in particular, Islam, as well as national differences in suicide rates, and the variation of suicide rates within a nation (for example, over the states of the USA). Descriptions of suicidal behaviour in some groups are provided, including African American slaves in the 1700s and 1800s, Siberian indigenous peoples, and the Roma. Cultural scripts for suicide are described, such as seppuku, sati, and victim-precipitated homicide, and types of suicide in which the staging of the suicidal act is determined by the culture. Finally, it is argued that, not only does culture have an impact on the suicide rate of a society, but also that culture is the primary determinant of the staging of the suicidal act, that is, the location chosen for suicide (for example, at home versus away from home), the method chosen for suicide, the clothes worn, the motive for the suicidal act, and other choices that the would-be suicide has to make.

Описание:

Empathy dissolves the boundaries between self and others, and feelings of altruism towards others are activated. This process results in more compassionate and caring contexts, as well as helping others in times of suffering. This book provides evidence from neuroscience and quantum physics that it is empathy that connects humanity, and that this awareness can create a more just society. It extends interest in values-based management, exploring the intellectual, physical, ecological, spiritual and aesthetic well-being of organizations and society rather than the more common management principles of maximising profit and efficiency.

This book challenges the existing paradigm of capitalism by providing scientific evidence and empirical data that empathy is the most important organizing mechanism. The book is unique in that it provides a comprehensive review of the transformational qualities of empathy in personal, organizational and local contexts. Integrating an understanding based upon scientific studies of why the fields of positive psychology and organizational scholarship are important, it examines the evidence from neuroscience and presents leading-edge studies from quantum physics with implications for the organizational field. Together the chapters in this book attempt to demonstrate how empathy helps in the reduction of human suffering and the creation of a more just society.

Описание: Everyone who dies by suicide has thought about suicide prior to their action. Suicidal ideation is, therefore, one of the most important risk factors for suicide. This book explores and illustrates current research on this risk factor. There are reviews of selected aspects of suicidal ideation. Karolina Krysinska and David Lester review research on whether religiosity is a protective factor for suicidal ideation, while John Gunn reviews whether bullying is a risk factor. Cathy Pederson reviews research on suicidal ideation in the chronically ill. Three research studies are presented: Mahboubeh Dadfar on mattering as a protective factor in Iranian psychiatric patients, Jenny Huen and her colleagues on correlations of suicidal ideation in Chinese students, and Steven Stack on suicidal ideation in men who have been raped. The content of suicidal ideation is discussed by James Overholser and his colleagues, and Jennifer Laffier presents examples of suicidal communications in social media. Finally, Frank Bailey presents two case studies of individuals in which their suicidal ideation is presented in the context of their life histories. The chapters illustrate the importance and the complexity of suicidal ideation and its role in leading to suicidal actions.
