Описание:

..it is increasingly clear that cancer is also a disease of inertia. In this book, a broadly multidisciplinary group presents the evidence and provides the recommendations. ... The antidote to diseases of inertia is movement -- lets move!

John Potter, M.D., Ph.D., from the Foreword

The American Cancer Society estimates that a third of all cancer deaths could be prevented through avoidance of obesity and the rejection of sedentary lifestyles. The World Health Organization also supports this claim. Additionally, these and other organizations now recognize the role that activity can play in improving the quality of life for cancer patients.

Cancer Prevention and Management through Exercise and Weight Control provides us with the support necessary to make a call to action. Itbrings together the contributions of world-class researchers to lay out the evidence and a plan of attack for coping with this crisis. The text begins by focusing on the research methods used in assessing the complex associations between activity, energy balance, and risk and prognosis. In comprehensive literature reviews, the authors consider the role of physical activity in the incidence of individual cancers, then explore the mechanisms that might explain this connection. They continue with a look at the relation between weight and cancer incidence, including a consideration of genetics.

Research is also provided linking physical activity and weight control to a cancer patients quality of life and prognosis. The work concludes with ideas on how a plan of action might be implemented at the individual, clinical, and public health levels. It also provides guidance on incorporating exercise and diet recommendations into clinical oncology practice.

Описание: The purpose of this book is to review our state of knowledge about the neurobehavioral and psychosocial processes involved in behavioral inhibitory processes and to provide an insight into how these basic research findings may be translated into the practice of drug abuse prevention interventions. Over the last decade, there has been a wealth of information indicating that substance use disorders do not simply reflect an exaggeration of reward seeking behavior, but that they also represent a dysfunction of behavioral inhibitory processes that are critical in exercising self-control. A number of studies have determined that individuals with substance use disorders have poor inhibitory control compared to non-abusing individuals. In addition, the fact that the adolescent period is often characterized by a lack of inhibitory control may be one important reason for the heightened vulnerability for the initiation of drug use during this time. Controlled experiments utilizing neuroscience techniques in laboratory animals or neuroimaging techniques in humans have revealed that individual differences in prefrontal cortical regions may underlie, at least in part, these differences in inhibitory control. Although a few excellent journal reviews have been published on the role of inhibitory deficits in drug abuse, there has been relatively little attention paid to the potential applications of this work for drug abuse prevention. The current book will provide both basic and applied researchers with an overview of this important health-relevant topic. Since translational research cuts across multiple disciplines and most readers are not familiar with all of these disciplines, the reading level will be geared to be accessible to graduate students, as well as to faculty and researchers in the field. The book will be organized around three general themes, encased within introductory and concluding chapters. The first theme will review basic neurobehavioral research findings on inhibition and drug abuse. Chapters in this theme will emphasize laboratory studies using human volunteers or laboratory animals that document the latest research implicating a relation between inhibition and drug abuse at both the neural and behavioral levels of analysis. The second theme will move the topic to at-risk populations that have impulse control problems, including children, adolescents and young adults. The third theme will concentrate on prevention science as it relates to inhibitory control. Chapters in this theme will be written by experts attempting to develop and improve prevention interventions by integrating evidence-based knowledge about inhibitory control processes. In all of the chapters, writers will be asked to speculate about innovative approaches that may be useful for the practice of prevention.

Описание:

HIV continues to be a profound challenge facing communities nationally and internationally. Until a vaccine or a cure is found, prevention remains a most crucial line of defense. However, the successes made to reduce exposure and transmission have not benefited all communities equally. HIV continues to affect vulnerable communities, and HIV-related health disparities are growing.

The work documented in Innovations in HIV Prevention Research and Practice through Community Engagement spotlights the effectiveness of community involvement to reduce HIV infections in the United States. This timely resource introduces the concepts of community engagement, partnership, and community-based participatory research (CBPR). Contributors provide detailed examples of these concepts in which diverse research partners blend their unique insights and skills to arrive at an authentic understanding of phenomena and inform the translation of best practices and processes to enhance equity in HIV prevention and treatment. Equitable interactive collaboration is central to these efforts, in which community members and representatives from organizations, the scientific and medical sectors, and other relevant agencies nurture long-term health improvement through sustained teamwork. Challenges and barriers to effective engagement are identified, as are characteristics of successful partnerships. Included in the book:

  • Details of a multigenerational HIV prevention intervention in a rural southeastern community.
  • The challenges and successes of developing, implementing, and evaluating an intervention for higher-risk predominately heterosexual black men in college.
  • The history of gay community involvement in HIV prevention and its contributions to the theory and current practice of engagement.
  • Next steps in the integration of HIV-related policy change and research.
  • Community engagement within American Indian communities.
  • Keys to sustaining a CBPR partnership to prevent HIV within ethnic, sexual, and gender minority communities.

Innovations in HIV Prevention Research and Practice through Community Engagement offers researchers and practitioners in public health, community health, and medicine guidance on community engagement that is both inspiring and realistic.

"Community engagement and knowledge continue to be essential to prevent HIV infections. This book is a compilation of the state-of-the-science of engagement and delves deeper into the meaning and utilization of community-based participatory research, with implications that reach beyond the HIV epidemic to public health and medicine in general."

Описание:

An encyclopedic, A-Z listing of terminology, Loss Prevention and Safety Control: Terms and Definitions addresses the need for a comprehensive reference that provides a complete and sufficient description of the terminology used in the safety/loss prevention field. Fostering clarity in communication among diverse segments within the field and between outside agencies, this book:

  • Provides a reference for the background, meaning, and description of safety and loss prevention terms being used in government, industry, research, and education
  • Contains two-paragraph descriptions of terms, photographs, diagrams, graphs, and tables to aid understanding of the subject, making it more than a dictionary
  • Includes common safety terms, safety engineering aspects, a description of safety organizations, and a list of common safety standards and their scope

The field of safety and loss prevention encompasses myriad unrelated industries and organizations, such as insurance companies, research entities, process industries, and educational organizations. These organizations may not realize that their terminology is not understood by individuals or even compatible with the nomenclature used outside their own sphere of influence. And even though fire protection and environmental professionals use identical and similar terminology, their meanings may be slightly different in selected applications.

An all-encompassing reference, the book uses OSHA standards and interpretations as guidelines for the definitions and explanations. Drawing from the many areas that influence the terminology, it provides a basic understanding of the terms used in lost prevention and control.

Описание: Hydrostatic Testing, Corrosion, and Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion: A Field Manual for Control and Prevention teaches industry professionals, managers, and researchers how to combat corrosion failure associated with hydrotesting. It discusses how a test liquid must be selected, how corrosion by bacteria should be controlled, and how to eliminate the risk of leakage. Rather than teaching how hydrotests should be conducted, it helps the reader evaluate the quality of a hydrotest that’s already been conducted in terms of oxygen scavenger use, biocide testing, inhibitor addition, and water quality and explains the tasks that top and middle management must ensure are taken with respect to corrosion assessment of hydrotesting. The manual also discusses microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) as the main corrosion mechanism related to post-hydrotesting and offers essential knowledge on combating this corrosion process. In addition to being a manual for top and middle management on how to deal with corrosion, this book also:
