Описание: The most enjoyable way to learn about an unfamiliar culture is through its stories--especially when they're told in two languages! Thai Stories for Language Learners introduces 28 entertaining Thai stories with bilingual Thai and English versions presented on facing pages. The stories are adapted from traditional folktales with roots in the Thai oral tradition, classic Thai literature, and Thai versions of the Indian Jataka Tales--which describe the past lives of the Buddha. The stories in this book include: "The Frightened Rabbit" is a well-known story about rabbit who hears a loud thundering sound and concludes it is a landslide, without investigating further.
He runs about telling others of the landslide, thus causing unnecessary panic. "A Horse-faced Woman" is one of the most popular folktales in Thailand because the heroine's appearance and character differ vastly from other Thai heroines. Her equine appearance, unpopularity with fellow villagers, and passionate desires to marry the handsome Prince Pin Thong collide.
"A Myth of Phra Ruang" is a classic tale popular among Thai people. It tells the story of a legendary hero--Phra Ruang--who frees the people of Lavo (Lopburi) from the ancient Khmer rulers. When the Khmer king tries to kill him, Phra Ruang escapes and is ordained as a monk.
And many more!Alongside each story, readers will find:A list of key vocabulary in the Thai script, Romanized form, and the English meaningsA set of questions and writing activitiesA Thai pronunciation guideOnline audio recording in order to improve pronunciation and comprehension. This book will be of interest to learners who are beginning to read and write the Thai language and would like additional practice, as well as to general readers interested in learning about Thai culture.

Описание: Ideal for the ESL classroom, International Folktales provides an opportunity for students to learn about the folktales told by different cultures around the world. The folktales in this volume span the globe and are both educational and entertaining. Readers will enjoy following the adventures of the Laotian trickster XiengMieng, discovering the profound lesson in the Pashtun tale "The Walnut and the Pumpkin," and appreciating the frights inspired by Latin American ghost La Llorona. Author and educator Nancy Harmon, co-founder of the nonprofit Center for Global Awareness, has collected these stories during years of teaching around the world. Stories are arranged by linguistic complexity, starting with simpler sentence structures and moving on to more challenging syntax and vocabulary. Language awareness activities, comprehension questions, and vocabulary exercises allow students to test their learning and consider the stories in realms beyond the written page. Stories can be used for different levels, from beginning to high intermediate students. Regardless of the classroom, readers will discover newfound appreciation for human commonalities, and for intriguing cultural differences. "Small school students just enjoy reading these stories. Older university students found them philosophic and life true. As a teacher I was glad to find the variety of activities that Nancy offers. Thus, all are happy." - Urunsa, a teacher in Kyrgyzstan. This book is for adult learners, educators, and students. Illustrated. Table of Contents "The Dog and the Meat" "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" "The Tiger and the Mouse" "The King and His Daughters" "The Cobra" "The Walnut and the Pumpkin" "The Sound of Money" "XiengMieng Tricks the King" "The Great Rain" "La Llorona" "Stone Soup"
Witches, fairies, unicorns, giants, dwarves, gnomes, and talking animals. Folk tales feature many magical creatures and larger or smaller than life entities and are great for pastime activities. What if such enchanted beings are replaced by familiar figures of kings, queens, lords, peasants, pirates, and slaves? What if folk tales are given center stage to understand the international politics and sociocultural matters of a milieu? By analyses of Italian folktales and the notion of Other as represented by Turks and Moors, the book is premised to address the clashing, bifurcating, and intersecting paths of the ruling classes and the subaltern groups and is set to throw a light on the convoluted hegemonic relations between different strata in the Italian society in the fifteenth and the sixteenth centuries.
