Описание: Updates for many countries have made it possible to estimate hunger in the world with greater accuracy this year. In particular, newly accessible data enabled the revision of the entire series of undernourishment estimates for China back to 2000, resulting in a substantial downward shift of the series of the number of undernourished in the world. Nevertheless, the revision confirms the trend reported in past editions: the number of people affected by hunger globally has been slowly on the rise since 2014. The report also shows that the burden of malnutrition in all its forms continues to be a challenge. There has been some progress for child stunting, low birthweight and exclusive breastfeeding, but at a pace that is still too slow. Childhood overweight is not improving and adult obesity is on the rise in all regions.

The report complements the usual assessment of food security and nutrition with projections of what the world may look like in 2030, if trends of the last decade continue. Projections show that the world is not on track to achieve Zero Hunger by 2030 and, despite some progress, most indicators are also not on track to meet global nutrition targets. The food security and nutritional status of the most vulnerable population groups is likely to deteriorate further due to the health and socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The report puts a spotlight on diet quality as a critical link between food security and nutrition. Meeting SDG 2 targets will only be possible if people have enough food to eat and if what they are eating is nutritious and affordable. The report also introduces new analysis of the cost and affordability of healthy diets around the world, by region and in different development contexts. It presents valuations of the health and climate-change costs associated with current food consumption patterns, as well as the potential cost savings if food consumption patterns were to shift towards healthy diets that include sustainability considerations. The report then concludes with a discussion of the policies and strategies to transform food systems to ensure affordable healthy diets, as part of the required efforts to end both hunger and all forms of malnutrition.

Описание: These guiding principles are the result of an Expert Consultation jointly led by FAO and WHO in July 2019. They take a holistic approach to diets, and consider international nutrition recommendations, the environmental cost of food production and consumption, as well as adaptability to local social, cultural and economic contexts. The term “Sustainable Healthy Diets” was agreed upon during the Consultation to encompass the two dimensions – sustainability and healthiness of diets.

Sustainable Healthy Diets are dietary patterns that promote all dimensions of individuals’ health and wellbeing, have low environmental impact, are accessible, affordable, and culturally acceptable. They aim at people’s wellbeing at all life stages for present and future generations. They contribute to preventing all forms of malnutrition and reducing the risk of diet-related non-communicable diseases, while also supporting biodiversity.

These guiding principles emphasize the role of food consumption and diets in contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals at country level, including Goals 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger), 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality) and 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and 13 (Climate Action). They are translated into clear and non-technical messaging to be used by governments and other actors in policy-making and communications.

Описание: This paper examines evidence regarding climate variability and extremes in agricultural areas and the impact of these on agriculture and food security.

The case studies presented provide an integrated picture of how increasing climate variability and extremes are negatively affecting agriculture, resulting in destructive secondary impacts on livelihoods, income, food prices and coping capacities. These in turn lead to increased food insecurity.

According to the study, the challenge is to scale up and accelerate actions that strengthen the resilience of food systems and livelihoods to climate variability and extremes. Integrated, rather than dissociated, disaster risk reduction and management, as well as climate adaptation policies, programmes and practices are critical.

Role of Income Inequality in Shaping Outcomes on Individual Food Insecurity: Background Paper for The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2019

Описание: This background study for the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2019 shows how income inequality and GDP per capita, analysed both alone and together, determine the probability of individual food insecurity in low- and middle-income countries. Results show that increases in the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita are concurrent with declines in individual food insecurity.

The study uses the 2014 Gallup World Poll (GWP) dataset on a sample of 75 low- and middle-income countries to collect individual and household socio-economic information, and merges it with two country-level characteristics: GDP per capita and the Gini index of income inequality. The result is a unique dataset containing information at different levels of disaggregation that comprise individual, household and country-level variables. The GWP dataset of individual food insecurity is based on the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) and employs a three-level linear probability model to assess the macro-economic effects of economic growth and income inequality on individual food insecurity.

The results show that individuals living in countries with a high Gini index have on average a 33 percentage point higher probability of experiencing severe food insecurity and a 42 percentage point higher probability of moderate or severe food insecurity. Importantly, the results also indicate that high income inequality works to undercut the contribution of per capita GDP in reducing individual food insecurity, both in terms of severe and moderate or severe food insecurity. The findings suggest that by tackling income inequality, economic growth can become a force for reducing food insecurity, especially in low- and middle-income countries

Описание: Healthy Food: Perspectives, Availability and Consumption first explores the pathological form of healthy eating, orthorexia nervosa. Although orthorexia nervosa cannot be found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association, important findings suggest that orthorexia nervosa should receive wider scientific and public attention. Additionally, the current literature regarding the effects of healthy foods and early feeding practices in childhood is explored in the context of the primordial prevention of non-communicable diseases and their risk factors. This compilation also examines carrot bagasse flour and banana peel flour for their potential to be employed as functional ingredients to improve the texture, color, and flavor of raw meat products, as chorizo, or cooked meat products, as sausages. Candelilla wax oleogel is investigated for its potential to replace pork back fat lard in cooked sausages, specifically focusing on its textural profile, moisture, color, and sensory acceptance. Results indicate that candelilla wax oleogel can be employed as a fat replacement, improving the health profile of certain meat products.
