Описание: Is there really such a thing as giftedness? Are programs for gifted children elitist and undemocratic? Giftedness 101 addresses this extremely controversial topic with the intention of dispelling the many myths surrounding the concept of giftedness and providing a clear, cohesive conception of the psychology and development of gifted children.

Seeking to reinvigorate the study of giftedness as a legitimate discipline of psychology, the book examines numerous viewpoints of giftedness that have scientific validity. It explores the many disparate opinions about giftedness throughout history, and discusses the meaning and characteristics of giftedness throughout the lifespan. Comprehensive methods of assessment are described along with parental and educational roles in developing the abilities of gifted children. The book addresses the unique psychological needs of gifted children, often manifested as ""feeling different,"" and examines special issues such as gifted children with learning disabilities, gender considerations, implications of socio-economic status, and more. Discussions of future trends and gifted education policy conclude the book.

Описание: This book contains two parts. The first part, Chapters 1 to 14 provide a systematic insight into key aspects of gifted students starting from different approaches to defining giftedness, then identifying the gifted, their role in the society, gender differences, socio-emotional development, mentoring gifted students, creating an optimal environment for their development, evaluating the work of the gifted, underachievement of the gifted, methods and programs of working with the gifted, use of modern technologies in teaching gifted students, and training of teachers to work with the gifted population. The second part of the manuscript includes a case study, or empirical research on the development of students gifted in mathematics. The research method is explained first, including a description of the participants and data collection instruments. The research conducted is a case study showing the development of gifted mathematicians both in schools and in the family environment, from early childhood to higher education. The research includes many factors in the family environment such as: socio-economic and educational status of parents, learning conditions, number of children in the family, parents assistance with school obligations, parents reaction to childrens successes and failures, punishment, etc. The research also includes many in-school factors that could have a positive or negative, motivating or restraining effect on the development of the mathematical gift of the respondents. Some of these factors are: identification of the gifted, methods of working with them, rewards, punishments, programs of working with them, teacher-student relations, and the like. In addition to the development of respondents in the family and school environments, their motivation was also investigated. Based on the interviews conducted with the respondents, the factors that induced our respondents to develop into mathematically gifted students were presented. The development of students gifted in mathematics is also described on the basis of the analysis of their pedagogical documentation, through which their abilities outside mathematics were determined, along with whether there were any crucial moments that had a positive or negative effect on them, i.e. their mathematical development. Finally, the results of the research were summarized and the factors that could have contributed to the mathematical gift of the respondents were listed. Moreover, certain recommendations are given to parents and teachers for more efficient work with the gifted population.

Описание: This book discusses the relationships between mathematical creativity and mathematical giftedness. It gathers the results of a literature review comprising all papers addressing mathematical creativity and giftedness presented at the International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME) conferences since 2000. How can mathematical creativity contribute to children’s balanced development? What are the characteristics of mathematical giftedness in early ages? What about these characteristics at university level? What teaching strategies can enhance creative learning? How can young children’s mathematical promise be preserved and cultivated, preparing them for a variety of professions? These are some of the questions addressed by this book. The book offers, among others: analyses of substantial learning environments that promote creativity in mathematics lessons; discussions of a variety of strategies for posing and solving problems; investigations of students’ progress throughout their schooling; and examinations of technological tools and virtual resources meant to enhance learning with understanding. Multiple perspectives in the interdisciplinary fields of mathematical creativity and giftedness are developed to offer a springboard for further research. The theoretical and empirical studies included in the book offer a valuable resource for researchers, as well as for teachers of gifted students in specialized or inclusive settings, at various levels of education.

Описание: This volume provides readers with a broad view on the variety of issues related to the educational research and practices in the field of Creativity in Mathematics and Mathematical Giftedness. The book explores (a) the relationship between creativity and giftedness; (b) empirical work with high ability (or gifted) students in the classroom and its implications for teaching mathematics; (c) interdisciplinary work which views creativity as a complex phenomena that cannot be understood from within the borders of disciplines, i.e., to present research and theorists from disciplines such as neuroscience and complexity theory; and (d) findings from psychology that pertain the creatively gifted students. As a whole, this volume brings together perspectives from mathematics educators, psychologists, neuroscientists, and teachers to present a collection of empirical, theoretical and philosophical works that address the complexity of mathematical creativity and giftedness, its origins, nature, nurture and ways forward. In keeping with the spirit of the series, the anthology substantially builds on previous ZDM volumes on interdisciplinarity (2009), creativity and giftedness (2013).
