Adopting a political and legal perspective, Redefining Citizenship in Australia, Canada, and Aotearoa New Zealand undertakes a transnational study that examines the demise of Britishness as a defining feature of the conceptualisation of citizenship in Australia, Canada, and Aotearoa New Zealand and the impact that this historic shift has had on Indigenous and other ethnic groups in these states. During the 1950s and 1970s an ethnically based citizenship was transformed into a civic-based one (one based on rights and responsibilities). The major context in which this took place was the demise of British race patriotism in Australia, English-speaking Canada, and Aotearoa New Zealand. Although the timing of this shift varied, Aboriginal groups and non-British ethnic groups were now incorporated, or appeared to be incorporated, into ideas of citizenship in all three nations. The development of citizenship in this period has traditionally been associated with immigration in Australia, Canada, and Aotearoa New Zealand. However, the historical origins of citizenship practices in all three countries have yet to be fully analysed. This is what Redefining Citizenship in Australia, Canada, and Aotearoa New Zealand does. The overarching question addressed by the book is: Why and how did the end of the British World lead to the redefinition of citizenship in Australia, Canada, and Aotearoa New Zealand between the 1950s and 1970s in regard to other ethnic and Indigenous groups? This book will be useful for history and politics courses, as well as specialised courses on citizenship and Indigenous studies.
Описание: "The biggest challenges of the twenty-first century require global solutions. Focusing on three of the most urgent problems of our time climate change, conflict, and poverty and inequality Tū Rangaranga introduces the notion of global citizenship, and what it means to be an active citizen in todays world. If we are fundamentally linked to people around the globe by the clothes we wear, the phones we use and the resources we consume, what does this mean for the rights and responsibilities that underpin citizenship? How should we respond to the climate crisis, conflict or inequality? In the face of these daunting global crises, this book encourages reflection on the power of collective action to enhance the dignity and rights of others. Part of a series of books exploring and promoting citizenship in Aotearoa and beyond, Tu Rangaranga joins Tutira Mai (2021) and Turangawaewae (2017, 2022) in combining academic rigour with an examination of how to engage as an active citizen."

Описание: Schools work continually to keep students with challenging and difficult behaviour engaged in education. The message of this book is that more can and needs to be done. The audience of this book includes all those who work with excluded children: school, health and justice personnel; school trustees, parents and community workers. School exclusion is a world-wide practice that disproportionately affects children from groups identified as at-risk. These students come from low-income backgrounds, are indigenous Australians, Māori and Pasifika students and many have disabilities. Being excluded from school is linked to low school achievement and youth offending, so keeping young people in school is crucial to the health of our communities. This is the first book to describe school exclusion practices in the local context in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. It presents accessible, locally based research and includes the voices of excluded students, their parents and those who speak for them. The second part of the book provides examples of research-based interventions that are proving effective. Common themes are early intervention, flexible approaches, robust communications and maintaining school connectedness. Excluding a child from school affects a wide range of practitioners who work to reduce poor life outcomes for young people. For this reason the authors of this book are drawn from the health, justice and education sectors in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. With forwards by Australia's National Children's Commissioner Megan Mitchell, and Judge Andrew Becroft, Principal Youth Court Judge for Aotearoa New Zealand.
Описание: The contentious science of phrenology once promised insight into character and intellect through external 'reading' of the head. In the transforming settler-colonial landscapes of nineteenth-century Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, popular phrenologists – figures who often hailed from the margins – performed their science of touch and cranial jargon everywhere from mechanics' institutions to public houses. In this compelling work, Alexandra Roginski recounts a history of this everyday practice, exploring how it featured in the fates of people living in, and moving through, the Tasman World. Innovatively drawing on historical newspapers and a network of archives, she traces the careers of a diverse range of popular phrenologists and those they encountered. By analysing the actions at play in scientific episodes through ethnographic, social and cultural history, Roginski considers how this now-discredited science could, in its own day, yield fleeting power and advantage, even against a backdrop of large-scale dispossession and social brittleness.

Social studies education plays a critical role in developing young people as active and engaged citizens in uncertain, complex times. This edited collection presents the latest research, ideas and practice in the social studies learning area in Aotearoa New Zealand. The writers challenge educators and policy makers to think deeply about the purpose of social studies and its transformative potential for citizenship education. They offer a direct challenge to the idea that social studies education is about preparing students to fit easily and uncritically into existing society - and suggest as alternative that social studies can support learners to critically navigate and take action in society during their time at school and in their futures.
Chapters delve into the Tikanga ā Iwi learning area, issues-based social inquiry, social justice, viewpoints and perspective, engaging emotions, multiliteracies and using assessment to enhance learning within social studies. Questions about the nature of knowledge and how students learn to be critical and active citizens are themes throughout, with reflective questions provided to provoke discussion.
This book is essential reading for teachers working with the core social studies learning area for Years 1-10, as well as the optional subject and related social science subjects from Years 11-13. It will also be of interest to policy makers, government and resource developers.
