Описание: Presents a collection of peer-reviewed scholarship from an annual international forum that focuses on topics related to the languages and cultures of Algonquian peoples. This series touches on a variety of subject areas, including anthropology, archaeology, education, ethnography, history, Indigenous studies, language studies, literature, and more.
Public school classrooms around the world have the power to shape and transform youth culture and identity. In this book, Mneesha Gellman examines how Indigenous high school students resist assimilation and assert their identities through access to Indigenous language classes in public schools. Drawing on ethnographic accounts, qualitative interviews, focus groups, and surveys, Gellman’s fieldwork examines and compares the experiences of students in Yurok language courses in Northern California and Zapotec courses in Oaxaca, Mexico. She contends that this access to Indigenous language instruction in secondary schooling serves as an arena for Indigenous students to develop their sense of identity and agency, and provides them tools and strategies for civic, social, and political participation, sometimes in unexpected ways. Showcasing young people’s voices, and those of their teachers and community members, in the fight for culturally relevant curricula and educational success, Gellman demonstrates how the Indigenous language classroom enables students to understand, articulate, and resist the systemic erasure and destruction of their culture embedded in state agendas and educational curricula. Access to Indigenous language education, she shows, has positive effects not only for Indigenous students, but for their non-Indigenous peers as well, enabling them to become allies in the struggle for Indigenous cultural survival. Through collaborative methodology that engages in research with, not on, Indigenous communities, Indigenous Language Politics in the Schoolroom explores what it means to be young, Indigenous, and working for social change in the twenty-first century.

Are you looking for a new and exclusive diet for losing weight quickly in less 30 days? Then keep reading...
DASH is an abbreviation for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. It is recommended as a remedy for those suffering from hypertension and a preventive measure for those with normal blood pressure.
DASH recommends a dietary lifestyle change as opposed to quick fixes. You are encouraged to eat a wide range of nutrient-dense foods mainly fruits, low-fat dairy products, lean meats, vegetables, and whole grains. Another essential component of the diet is reduced sodium intake.
DASH diet dates back to the early 1990s when concern was raised about the prevalence of lifestyle diseases, among them hypertension. In 1992, under the funding of the National Institute of Health (NIH), several research projects were initiated to determine if dietary changes could be effective in treating hypertension.
The participants were provided with a meal plan and advised not to include any other lifestyle modification so that all the changes could be attributed directly to the dietary interventions.
The results were encouraging. A decrease of about 6 to 11 mm Hg was reported in systolic blood pressure in a span of a few weeks. In addition, the lower levels of sodium in the diet dropped, the lower the blood pressure dropped. In addition to reducing hypertension, the cholesterol levels were reduced as well.
After several subsequent studies and experiments with positive results, the DASH diet became and still is highly recommended as a long-term remedy for hypertension.
This book covers the following topics:
- What is the dash diet
- Benefits of dash diet
- Breakfast recipes
- Snack, sides & small plates
- Salad & soup

- Fish & shellfish recipes
- Poultry & meat
- Side dish recipes

The DASH diet allows a variety of foods rich in nutrients such as calcium, potassium, and magnesium. The food groups involved include legumes, nuts, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and some fats. These ingredients are low in cholesterol and saturated fats, limiting the daily calorie intake to a healthy 2,000 on average.

Описание: "Engrossing. . . . Gellman is] a thorough, exacting reporter . . . a marvelous narrator for this particular story, as he nimbly guides us through complex technical arcana and some stubborn ethical questions. . . . Dark Mirror would be simply pleasurable to read if the story it told didn't also happen to be frighteningly real." --Jennifer Szalai, The New York TimesFrom the three-time Pulitzer Prize winner and author of the New York Times bestseller Angler, the definitive master narrative of Edward Snowden and the modern surveillance state, based on unique access to Snowden and groundbreaking reportage around the world.
Edward Snowden touched off a global debate in 2013 when he gave Barton Gellman, Laura Poitras and Glenn Greenwald each a vast and explosive archive of highly classified files revealing the extent of the American government's access to our every communication. They shared the Pulitzer Prize that year for public service. For Gellman, who never stopped reporting, that was only the beginning. He jumped off from what Snowden gave him to track the reach and methodology of the U.S. surveillance state and bring it to light with astonishing new clarity. Along the way, he interrogated Snowden's own history and found important ways in which myth and reality do not line up. Gellman treats Snowden with respect, but this is no hagiographic account, and Dark Mirror sets the record straight in ways that are both fascinating and important. Dark Mirror is the story that Gellman could not tell before, a gripping inside narrative of investigative reporting as it happened and a deep dive into the machinery of the surveillance state. Gellman recounts the puzzles, dilemmas and tumultuous events behind the scenes of his work - in top secret intelligence facilities, in Moscow hotel rooms, in huddles with Post lawyers and editors, in Silicon Valley executive suites, and in encrypted messages from anonymous accounts. Within the book is a compelling portrait of national security journalism under pressure from legal threats, government investigations, and foreign intelligence agencies intent on stealing Gellman's files. Throughout Dark Mirror, Gellman wages an escalating battle against unknown adversaries who force him to mimic their tradecraft in self-defense. With the vivid and insightful style that is the author's trademark, Dark Mirror is a true-life spy tale about the surveillance-industrial revolution and its discontents. Along the way, with the benefit of fresh reporting, it tells the full story of a government leak unrivaled in drama since All the President's Men.

Описание:
Originally published in 1979. American diplomacy during Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidency has received much attention, with one notable exception--the United States' relations with Latin America. Irwin Gellman's book corrects this past neglect through a perceptive analysis of FDR's Good Neighbor efforts in Latin America. Based on a fresh examination of State Department records and extensive manuscript sources (including an unprecedented use of Nelson Rockefeller's oral history archives), the book points out the complexities of Good Neighbor diplomacy and its intimate relationship to Roosevelt's global strategies. As background to his discussions of FDR's policies, Gellman looks first at how Latin American affairs were handled during the administrations of Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover, the three Republicans who preceded Roosevelt in office. Good Neighbor diplomacy, Gellman shows, was not a carryover from these administrations; it bore the distinctive mark of FDR's own making. He then describes how Roosevelt's policy of nonintervention worked, particularly how military force was superseded by more subtle diplomatic maneuverings.
Turning to a discussion of economic relations with Latin America, Gellman focuses on how the United States' own situation--cut off from international trade by the Depression--encouraged regional expansion. And, finally, he looks at how Roosevelt parlayed the threat of war in Europe and the specter of Nazi penetration in the Americas to further solidify a hemispheric stand. Gellman's account vividly demonstrates that Good Neighbor diplomacy was as much the product of personality as it was of policy. In particular, it emerged out of the rivalries and alliances among three men: Roosevelt; his Secretary of State, Cordell Hull; and Assistant Secretary of State, Sumner Welles. Gellman (the first to have access to FBI files on Welles) characterizes FDR as an astute politician who saw an opportunity to use pan-Americanism to restore America to world prominence--yet could not handle the personality conflicts among those in his own ranks. Gellman shows how tenuous a government policy can be when so much of it depends on personal control and influence.
