Описание: How did scientists, artists, designers, manufacturers and amateur enthusiasts experience and value the sea and its products? Examining the commoditization of the ocean world during the nineteenth century, this book demonstrates how the transaction of oceanic objects inspired a multifaceted material discourse stemming from scientific exploration, colonial expansion, industrialization, and the rise of middle-class leisure. From the seashore to the seabed, marine organisms and environments, made tangible through processing and representational technologies, captivated practitioners and audiences. Combining essays and case studies by scholars, curators, and scientists, Sea Currents investigates the collecting and display, illustration and ornamentation, and trade and consumption of marine flora and fauna, analysing their material, aesthetic and commercial dimensions. Traversing global art history, the history of science, empire studies, anthropology, ecocriticism and material culture, this book surveys the currency of marine matter embedded in the economies and ecologies of a modernizing ocean world.

Описание:

Consuming Crisis is a crucial account of how consumer culture capitalized on Coronavirus (COVID-19). Sobande explores how brands claim to care while they encourage people to ‘keep calm and consume’. This critical analysis of the power and politics of marketing examines an eclectic mix of campaigns, content, and experiences. Such work outlines the societal significance of fast-fashion adverts, banana bread’s pandemic ‘moment’, university social media strategies, and how digital technology mediates memories and work. Based on the belief that brands cannot be activists, Sobande creatively considers how brands construct care, camaraderie, culture, and so-called ‘normal’ life during times of crisis.

Francesca Sobande is a Senior Lecturer in Digital Media Studies at Cardiff University

Описание: WINNER of the 2023 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title AwardFocuses on a much discussed and controversial aspect of conservation: the commodification of nature. Can the successful marketization of what is generally perceived as wilderness help to provide for biodiversity conservation, economic development and social emancipation? At a time of profound anxiety about the impact of human activity on nature and the catastrophic effects of climate change, the "sixth mass extinction", invasive species and rapidly expanding zoonotic diseases, this volume engages with the practices, discourses, and materialities surrounding the commodification of "the wild". Focusing on the relationship between commodification and wilderness, the contributors pay particular attention to commodification's newer iterations in which human management plays a significant role, such as wildlife-park tourism, trophy-hunting, and trade in herbal medicines, perfumes and luxury exotic food items. Dominant neoliberal approaches have aimed to address global environmental challenges through the commodification and marketization of nature: by valorizing nature, they claim, biodiversity can be safeguarded and "wild" landscapes protected. This, it is thought, will not only open up a new frontier of sustainable, non-exploitative, participatory capitalist expansion, but invigorate rural livelihoods, reduce poverty, and add important assets to otherwise vulnerable rural economies. This important book challenges this future trajectory. Investigating a broad range of cases across southern and eastern Africa, from the illegal sandalwood trade to legal trade in devil's claw and honeybush, to trophy-hunting and wilderness safaris, the contributors reveal the pitfalls and challenges of commodification, what this means for the continent and beyond.OPEN ACCESS: This title is freely available in digital format under the Creative Commons license CC BY-NC-ND

Описание:

Electric Currents in Geospace and Beyond volume is an outcome of an international collaboration among different space science communities, that takes an integrated approach by treating currents as a fundamental phenomenon and incorporating their phenomenology and physics for many regions in one volume. The volume reviews recent advances of research on electric currents in various space plasmas of our solar system and provides an authoritative up ]to ]date insight on the current status of research on electric currents in outer space.

In the last decade, electric currents in the ionosphere and magnetosphere have been under increased scrutiny with more sophisticated spacecraft at both high and low orbits. Furthermore, ground magnetometer arrays and radar networks have enormously expanded to monitor the ionospheric electrodynamics on a global scale with high timing accuracy. In addition, there have been tremendous advances in the capabilities of simulations to allow modeling many of the relevant processes. In addition to advances in our own geospace, much knowledge has been accumulated about planetary current systems (other than Earth) and even the Sun in the last decade. These new developments make it timely to compile a new volume, reviewing and evaluating recent and accepted results on electric currents in space plasmas in order to gain a deeper understanding of this multidisciplinary research field.

Electric Currents in Geospace and Beyond thus provides a broad overview of recent advances on different types of currents in different types of environments, and will therefore serve as an excellent reference volume for a broad community of space scientists, astronomers and astrophysicists who are studying space plasmas beyond our solar system.

Описание:

Building on Zolt n D rnyei's authoritative work in the field of learner motivation, this book introduces a new conceptualization-Directed Motivational Currents (DMCs)-and sets out the defining aspects of what they are, what they are not, and how they are related to language learning motivation. Going beyond focused behavior in a single activity, DMCs concern intensive long-term motivation. The distinctive feature of the theory is that it views motivation not simply as a springboard for action but also as a uniquely self-renewing and sustainable process. It is this energizing capacity which distinguishes DMCs from almost every other motivational construct described in the research literature.

Motivational Currents in Language Learning offers new insights, valuable both to motivation researchers and classroom practitioners. The accessible style, along with plentiful illustrations and practical suggestions for promoting sustained learning, invite readers to think about motivation in a different way. Highly relevant for language teachers, teachers-in-training, teacher educators, and researchers in TESOL and applied linguistics, the book explains how the DMC construct can be integrated into course structures and teaching methodologies, and encourages teachers to try out novel methods for harnessing motivational power in classroom settings.

Описание: Mass Transport, Gravity Flows, and Bottom Currents: Downslope and Alongslope Processes and Deposits focuses solely on important downslope and alongslope processes. The book provides clear definitions and characteristics based on soil mechanics, fluid mechanics and sediment concentration by volume. It addresses Slides, Slumps, and Debris Flows, Grain Flows, Liquefied/Fluidized Flows, and Turbidity Currents, Density plumes, Hyperpycnal Flows, the Triggering Mechanisms of Downslope Processes, Bottom Currents, and Soft-Sediment Deformation Structures.

The mechanics of each process are described in detail and used to provide empirically-driven categories to help recognize these deposits it the rock record. Case studies clearly illustrate of the problems inherent in recognizing these processes in the rock record, and potential solutions are provided alongside future avenues of research. An appendix also provides step-by-step guidance in describing and interpreting sediments.

Описание: The world’s oceans play a vital role in everyday life, from climate regulation to food provision, and are widely recognized as a global commons. But they also face daunting challenges in the form of climate change, population growth, escalating pollution, and rapidly evolving technologies that speed the reach and pace of resource extractions. Common Currents: Examining How We Manage the Ocean Commons calls upon experts in international ocean law, policy, and science to explore the question to what extent—and to what effect—we currently manage the oceans as a global commons. This volume captures some key issues, questions, and lessons, to help enhance understanding of current practices and opportunities to grow collaborative management efforts.
