In an "other world" composed of language--it could be a fathomless Martian well, a labyrinthine hotel or forest--a narrative unfolds, and with it the experiences, memories, and dreams that constitute reality for Haruki Murakami's characters and readers alike. Memories and dreams in turn conjure their magical counterparts--people without names or pasts, fantastic animals, half-animals, and talking machines that traverse the dark psychic underworld of this writer's extraordinary fiction.
Fervently acclaimed worldwide, Murakami's wildly imaginative work in many ways remains a mystery, its worlds within worlds uncharted territory. Finally in this book readers will find a map to the strange realm that grounds virtually every aspect of Murakami's writing. A journey through the enigmatic and baffling innermost mind, a metaphysical dimension where Murakami's most bizarre scenes and characters lurk, The Forbidden Worlds of Haruki Murakami exposes the psychological and mythological underpinnings of this other world. Matthew Carl Strecher shows how these considerations color Murakami's depictions of the individual and collective soul, which constantly shift between the tangible and intangible but in this literary landscape are undeniably real.
Through these otherworldly depths The Forbidden Worlds of Haruki Murakami also charts the writer's vivid "inner world," whether unconscious or underworld (what some Japanese critics call achiragawa, or "over there"), and its connectivity to language. Strecher covers all of Murakami's work--including his efforts as a literary journalist--and concludes with the first full-length close reading of the writer's newest novel, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage.
The creation of a new school system in the Philippines in 1898 and educational reforms in occupied Japan, both with stated goals of democratization, speaks to a singular vision of America as savior, following its politics of violence with benevolent recuperation. The pedagogy of recovery—in which schooling was central and natives were forced to accept empire through education—might have shown how Americans could be good occupiers, but it also created projects of Orientalist racial management: Filipinos had to be educated and civilized, while the Japanese had to be reeducated and “de-civilized.”
In Campaigns of Knowledge, Malini Schueller contrapuntally reads state-sanctioned proclamations, educational agendas, and school textbooks alongside political cartoons, novels, short stories, and films to demonstrate how the U.S. tutelary project was rerouted, appropriated, reinterpreted, and resisted. In doing so, she highlights how schooling was conceived as a process of subjectification, creating particular modes of thought, behaviors, aspirations, and desires that would render the natives docile subjects amenable to American-style colonialism in the Philippines and occupation in Japan.
Описание: Through accessible prose, ethnographically-grounded analysis, and emotionally compelling stories, this book explores the rich pastiche of daily life and ritual activity at a major Japanese Zen temple in institutional, historical, and social context through the practices of its community of clergy, practitioners, parishioners, and visitors.

Описание: The Lively Experiment chronicles how Americans have continually demolished traditional prejudices while at the same time erecting new walls between belief systems. Nearly four hundred years after Roger Williams` 1633 Rhode Island colony, the "lively experiment" of religious tolerance remains a core tenet of the American way of life.

A Choice Outstanding Academic Title, 2017
At the end of the nineteenth century, Indigenous boarding schools were touted as the means for solving the “Indian problem” in both the United States and Canada. With the goal of permanently transforming Indigenous young people into Europeanized colonial subjects, the schools were ultimately a means for eliminating Indigenous communities as obstacles to land acquisition, resource extraction, and nation-building. Andrew Woolford analyzes the formulation of the “Indian problem” as a policy concern in the United States and Canada and examines how the “solution” of Indigenous boarding schools was implemented in Manitoba and New Mexico through complex chains that included multiple government offices with a variety of staffs, Indigenous peoples, and even nonhuman actors such as poverty, disease, and space. The genocidal project inherent in these boarding schools, however, did not unfold in either nation without diversion, resistance, and unintended consequences.
Inspired by the signing of the 2007 Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement in Canada, which provided a truth and reconciliation commission and compensation for survivors of residential schools, This Benevolent Experiment offers a multilayered, comparative analysis of Indigenous boarding schools in the United States and Canada. Because of differing historical, political, and structural influences, the two countries have arrived at two very different responses to the harm caused by assimilative education.

It is important that even institutions often viewed as abhorrent are dispassionately understood. This assertion is what motivates Arkotong Longkumer's pathbreaking ethnography of the Sangh Parivar, a family of organizations comprising the Hindu-right. In The Greater India Experiment, Longkumer counters the urge to explain away their ideas and actions as inconsequential by demonstrating their painstaking efforts to influence local politics and culture in the "Mongolian fringe" of Northeast India. For the first time, Longkumer constructs a comprehensive understanding of Hindutva, an idea central to the establishment of a Hindu nation-state, focusing on the Sangh Parivar's engagement with indigenous peoples in a region that has long resisted the "idea of India." He describes their activities as a Hindutva experiment, and through that lens analyzes their actions and behaviors in relation to the broader Indian political and cultural landscape, ultimately painting a unique picture of the country today.
Описание: Based on extensive research in eighteenth-century primary sources, this engaging history offers an eye-opening look at how colonists-at first, the backwoods Paxton Boys of Pennsylvania, but later the U.S. government-expropriated Native American lands, ending forever the dream of colonists and Indians living together in peace.
