Описание:

Learn how to teach multilingual students effectively and equitably with this practical and accessible resource. The authors share real-world examples from the classrooms of ESOL teachers, unpack the teachers' thinking about their instruction, and identify six core practices that are foundational to teaching multilingual students: knowing your multilingual students, building a positive learning environment, integrating content and language instruction, supporting language and literacy development, using assessment, and developing positive relationships and engaging in advocacy. The book focuses on how K–12 teachers can use these core practices in ways that humanize their instruction—positioning students as whole human beings, valuing the assets and resources they bring to the classroom, actively involving them in rigorous instruction that draws on their experiences and knowledge, responding to each unique learning context, and disrupting traditional power dynamics in education. This text will help pre- and in-service teachers of multilingual students to center equity and justice in their practice and understand how to move humanizing mindsets into action.

Book Features:

  • Identifies and describes core practices for teaching multilingual students.
  • Offers opportunities to analyze teachers' instruction using core practices.
  • Includes templates and additional resources that help teachers extend the use of core practices to their own planning.
  • Supports teacher educators in preparing teachers to move humanizing mindsets to humanizing practices.
  • Provides access to supplementary video clips depicting teachers as they engage in these practices and discuss their use.

Описание: While standard language ideology (SLI) is harmful in its exclusion of minorities through expression of language and race, translingualism provides a positive scaffolding characterized by the disposition of openness. Translingualism suggests that each utterance creates meaning and is a direct rebellion against SLI. It privileges unprivileged varieties of English over so-called Standard English. In order to combat SLI, scholars have emphasized the need for congenial multicultural spaces where students can use their cultural and linguistic resources as an asset and which supports the idea of students learning from each other through their diversity.

Teaching Practices and Language Ideologies for Multilingual Classrooms is an essential scholarly publication that examines the educational necessities for diverse student populations and multilingual students and provides rich teaching resources for guiding the creation of classroom environments that engages multilingual students and supports their writing and problem-solving skill development. Featuring a range of topics such as ethics, code-switching, and language education, this book is ideal for teachers, instructional designers, academicians, sociologists, administrators, language professionals, researchers, and students.

Описание: Literacy practices have changed over the past several years to incorporate modes of representation much broader than language alone, in which the textual is also related to the visual, the audio, the spatial, etc. This book focuses on research and instructional practices necessary for integrating an expanded view of literacy in the classroom that offers multiple points of entry for all students. Projects highlighted in this book incorporate multiple modes of communication (e.g., visual, aural, textual) through various digital and print-based written formats. In addition, this book particularly focuses on the possibilities that this expanded view of literacy holds for emergent to advanced bilingual students and specific scaffolds necessary for supporting them. Our focus is specifically multilingual students as classrooms across the United States and other English-speaking countries around the world become more and more diverse. The book considers educators as active participants in social change and contributors to our overall goal of social justice for all. This book grew out of work conducted by doctoral students and former doctoral students, now faculty at various universities, from the Language and Literacy Learning in Multilingual Settings (LLLMS) specialization in the Department of Teaching and Learning at the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Miami, Florida. The most outstanding feature of this work is the breadth of examples for integrating literacy in the classroom, as well as the specific instructional strategies provided for supporting multilingual students. This volume is unique in tackling both literacy and specific scaffolding for multilingual students. Additionally, the chapters here collectively aim to go beyond describing research to also provide a variety of classroom connections for practitioners and implications for teacher education.
