Описание: This book uncovers the multiple layers of challenges posed to achieve sustainable human health and improves the understanding of interactive areas set by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (1) no poverty, (2) zero hunger, (3) good health and wellbeing, (6) clean water and sanitation, and (11) sustainable cities and communities. The book focuses on conceptual understanding, food, nutrition, lifestyle, and their integration to reinforce the ideas of holistic health principles. The most important drivers of sustainable health are food, nutrition, and lifestyle. Healthy food is a basic need of human beings. In under-developed regions, people are underweight and facing malnutrition, with a prevalence of deficiency diseases due to low intake of micro-nutrients such as vitamin A, iodine, and protein among others. A good diet as well as lifestyle has a tremendous bearing on a person’s health, emotional stability, and enthusiasm for life. The global coronavirus pandemic has brought unimaginable devastation and hardship in all corners of the globe, questioning the existing healthcare services, health policies, and health planning across the developed and developing countries. It has also exposed the lacunae in understanding health, the base of human happiness. The global community needs to gravely ponder the health issues we are facing and explore sustainable solutions for health recovery and the wellbeing of humanity.

Описание:

Environmental Nutrition: Connecting Health and Nutrition with Environmentally Sustainable Diets explores the connection between diet, environmental sustainability and human health. Current food systems are a major contributor to our most pressing health and environmental issues, including climate change, water scarcity, food insecurity and chronic diseases. This book not only seeks to increase our understanding of the interrelatedness of these major global issues, but also aids in the creation of new solutions. Sections discuss the diet, the health and environment trilemma, food systems and their trends, environmental nutrition as an all-encompassing discipline, and the environmental nutrition model.

  • Demonstrates how the food system, the environment and human health are inter-related
  • Explores how dietary patterns impact food production and agriculture choices
  • Identifies the imbalance between current food production relative to demand
  • Addresses how the current food system negatively impacts the environment
  • Provides practical solutions to how diets can be both healthy and sustainable

Описание: These guiding principles are the result of an Expert Consultation jointly led by FAO and WHO in July 2019. They take a holistic approach to diets, and consider international nutrition recommendations, the environmental cost of food production and consumption, as well as adaptability to local social, cultural and economic contexts. The term “Sustainable Healthy Diets” was agreed upon during the Consultation to encompass the two dimensions – sustainability and healthiness of diets.

Sustainable Healthy Diets are dietary patterns that promote all dimensions of individuals’ health and wellbeing, have low environmental impact, are accessible, affordable, and culturally acceptable. They aim at people’s wellbeing at all life stages for present and future generations. They contribute to preventing all forms of malnutrition and reducing the risk of diet-related non-communicable diseases, while also supporting biodiversity.

These guiding principles emphasize the role of food consumption and diets in contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals at country level, including Goals 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger), 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality) and 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and 13 (Climate Action). They are translated into clear and non-technical messaging to be used by governments and other actors in policy-making and communications.
