A Just Future addresses the precarious future of American higher education and diversity and inclusion initiatives along with it. From a global pandemic to a national reckoning with anti-Blackness, the 2020 historical conjuncture brutally revealed the impact of structural inequalities on historically marginalized communities and galvanized college students, diversity officers, and educators on a scale not seen since the 1960s. In so doing, they exposed the unfinished business of the Civil Rights era and the limits of diversity and inclusion reforms.
The time has come to create a more just future for the most marginalized members at higher education institutions. To do so, we must share a common understanding of where we have been, what went wrong, and how to get back on track. Immigrants often embraced these policies because they, too, stood to gain from pensions, family allowances, unemployment benefits, and French nationality. By striking this bargain, they were also guaranteed safety and stability on a tumultuous continent.
Barton concludes that, in return for generous social provisions and refuge in dark times, immigrants joined the French nation through marriage and reproduction, breadwinning and child-rearing—in short, through families and family-making—which made them more French than even formal citizenship status could.

In 2012, a gruesome incident had shaken our country in December. 'Dear Nirbhaya' is the poem written in retrospect of what devastated us and made the students of colleges come out to protest. The way that peaceful protest was discouraged left me with questions. It is a poem of both tribute and a promise to Nirbhaya that we will have to fight to prevent cannibalism of this nature.
