Описание: Confronting Racism in Teacher Education aims to transform systematic and persistent racism through in-depth analyses of racial justice struggles and strategies in teacher education.
Liberation in Higher Education introduces and expands on the notion of Endarkened Feminist Epistemology (EFE) based on a qualitative case study of Cynthia B. Dillard and her students as well as the white researcher and author, Sarah Militz-Frielink, as she became transformed through her research in higher education. Dillard, who created EFE as a teaching and research paradigm in 2000, grounded it in several frameworks: Black feminist thought, standpoint theory, the tenets of African American spirituality, and the work of Parker J. Palmer on non-religious spirituality in education. The book delves into EFE’s origins and students’ meaning-making experiences with EFE—including related themes such as healing, identity development, cultural histories, spirituality, and the evolution of the phenomenon over time. This book also includes a chapter in which Militz-Frielink applies EFE as a methodology to herself, which is one of the recommended practices of EFE as a research tool. Liberation in Higher Education concludes with implications and recommendations for practitioners, particularly white practitioners in higher education who work with African American students in predominantly white institutions.
Описание: Centered on narratives from ethnically and racially diverse scholars of color with experience of working or studying in predominantly White institutions in the United States, this volume critically reflects on policies, and practices which limit or preclude racial diversity and inclusion in educational research and teaching.
Описание: Drawing from over 2 decades of research, this book offers an in-depth analysis of a systemic form of everyday racism commonly experienced by People of Color. Racial microaggressions are layered and cumulative assaults, often carried out in subtle and unconscious ways, which take a psychological and physiological toll on the body, mind, and spirit. The authors make a unique contribution to the study of racial microaggressions by using Critical Race Theory (CRT) to develop the concepts, frameworks, and models provided in this book. Focusing on the lived experiences of People of Color, Racial Microaggressions in Education can be used to disrupt the everyday racism that continues to target so many Communities of Color. Book Features: Theoretical, conceptual, and pedagogical tools to help all people recognize, respond to, and challenge racial microaggressions. An interdisciplinary approach that draws from the fields of education, law, policy, ethnic studies, Women of Color feminisms, sociology, history, theatre, psychology, and public health. Visual examples of racial microaggressions in historical and contemporary life.

Описание: Originally published in 1992. From talking to black and white primary school pupils about issues, not necessarily of `race`, which the children themselves saw as important, the authors here present a fascinating study of how `race` emerges for young children as a plausible explanatory framework within their everyday lives.

Purposeful, intentional racial bias poses an obvious threat to the possibility of real equity in schools. In this volume, antiracist educators explore an equally troubling, but insufficiently explored threat: the racism upheld by schools and districts that claim an antiracist commitment. These institutions perpetuate disparities by enacting that commitment through surface-level and soft diversity and inclusion goals and popular initiatives that are more equity optics than antiracism. This book asks: How is racism perpetuated through actions, programs, practices, and initiatives that might appear to be inclusion-oriented or "progressive," but never quite get around to eliminating racism? How do these efforts pose as racial equity while protecting systems of advantage and disadvantage—creating a sort of equity inertia? The book then asks: What would antiracism look like if we enacted a deeper antiracist approach? What is a truer vision for racial equity? Diverse authors apply these questions to an equally diverse assortment of programs and practices, such as trauma-informed care, social-emotional learning, restorative practices, anti-bias work in early childhood education, Montessori schooling, "inclusive" social studies curricula, and toxic positivity and "niceness" as stand-ins for racial equity.
Book Features:
Illustrates how K–12 educators can adopt more authentically justice-oriented approaches to antiracism.
Draws on existing theoretical frameworks such as critical race theory, critical whiteness studies, culturally sustaining pedagogies, and equity literacy.
Examines concepts such as white fragility, racial battle fatigue, white privilege, and interest convergence.
Includes a range of authors, from racial justice scholars to classroom teachers.
Offers an engaging and accessible format that combines narrative with theoretical grounding, bridging critical analysis to visions for moving forward.
