Описание:
This beautiful book charts the development of the circus as an art form around the world, from antiquity to the present day.
Using over 200 circus related artworks from the French National Library's private collections, celebrated cultural historian Pascal Jacob tells the story of travelling entertainers and their art and trade. From nomadic animal tamers of the Dark Ages to European jugglers and acrobats of the 1800s, from the use of the circus as Soviet propaganda to the 20th-century Chinese performance art renaissance, this is an exhaustive history with a uniquely international scope.
Jacob draws on both rare and famous artworks, including prints dating from the 13th century, and paintings by Picasso and Dor . In doing so he demonstrates the circus to be a visual and physical masterpiece, constantly moving and evolving, and just as exciting an experience for audiences now as it was 1,000 years ago.

Описание: A study of how notions of place and race inform the identities and performances of musicians in contemporary Cuba Derived from the nationalist writings of Jos Mart , the concept of Cubanidad (Cubanness) has always imagined a unified hybrid nation where racial difference is nonexistent and nationality trumps all other axes identities. Scholars have critiqued this celebration of racial mixture, highlighting a gap between the claim of racial harmony and the realities of inequality faced by Afro-Cubans since independence in 1898. In this book, Rebecca M. Bodenheimer argues that it is not only the recognition of racial difference that threatens to divide the nation, but that popular regional sentiment further contests the hegemonic national discourse. Given that the music is a prominent symbol of Cubanidad, musical practices play an important role in constructing regional, local, and national identities. This book suggests that regional identity exerts a significant influence on the aesthetic choices made by Cuban musicians. Through the examination of several genres, Bodenheimer explores the various ways that race and place are entangled in contemporary Cuban music. She argues that racialized notions which circulate about different cities affect both the formation of local identity and musical performance. Thus, the musical practices discussed in the book--including rumba, timba, eastern Cuban folklore, and son--are examples of the intersections between regional identity formation, racialized notions of place, and music-making. REBECCA M. BODENHEIMER, Oakland, California, is an ethnomusicologist who has conducted research in Cuba since 2004, examining the contemporary performance practices of rumba and a range of other Afro-Cuban folkloric and popular musical styles in the cities of Havana, Matanzas, and Santiago. Her work has appeared in Black Music Research Journal, Musical Quarterly, Ethnomusicology, and Latin American Music Review.
This volume studies the evolution of Chinese art during the Qin and Han Dynasties, The Three Kingdoms, Eastern and Western Jin, and the Northern and Southern Dynasties. It traces the initial artistic vocabularies of Chinese calligraphy as well as the rapid development of the performing and the decorative arts. A General History of Chinese Art comprises six volumes with a total of nine parts spanning from the Prehistoric Era until the 3rd year of Xuantong during the Qing Dynasty (1911). The work provides a comprehensive compilation of in-depth studies of the development of art throughout the subsequent reign of Chinese dynasties and explores the emergence of a wide range of artistic categories such as but not limited to music, dance, acrobatics, singing, story telling, painting, calligraphy, sculpture, architecture, and crafts. Unlike previous reference books, A General History of Chinese Art offers a broader overview of the notion of Chinese art by asserting a more diverse and less material understanding of arts, as has often been the case in Western scholarship.
Описание: How do the temporal features of sacred music affect social life in South Asia? Due to new time constraints in commercial contexts, devotional musicians in Bengal have adapted longstanding features of musical time linked with religious practice to promote their own musical careers. The Politics of Musical Time traces a lineage of singers performing a Hindu devotional song known as k?rtan in the Bengal region of India over the past century to demonstrate the shifting meanings and practices of devotional performance. Focusing on pad?bal? k?rtan, a type of devotional sung poetry that uses long-duration forms and combines song and storytelling, Eben Graves examines how expressions of religious affect and political belonging linked with the genre become strained in contemporary, shortened performance time frames. To illustrate the political economy of performance in South Asia, Graves also explores how religious performances and texts interact with issues of nationalism, gender, and economic exchange. Combining ethnography, history, and performance analysis, including videos from the author's fieldwork, The Politics of Musical Time reveals how ideas about the sacred and the modern have been expressed and contested through features of musical time found in devotional performance.

Описание:
An Inconvenient Black History of British Musical Theatre: 1900 - 1950 makes a radical and vital intervention in this established history of British musical theatre. It records how Black performance and creative practice was a significant force in the British musical theatre industry and disrupts established ideas that Black British performance practice starts after the arrival of the Windrush in 1948.
Through original research and investigation this book draws together threads from existing work in histories of popular music alongside significant archival work and framing of newly digitised newspapers, theatrical newspapers and magazines, and genealogical records. It makes two overarching arguments; firstly, that Black performance practice was a vital and significant part of the history of British musical theatre with an extraordinary impact on the development of the form; and secondly, that this was inherently a resistant practice on the part of hundreds, of practitioners of African descent, whose backgrounds reflect the breadth of the African diaspora. Through considering the presence of, and relationships between, African American, Caribbean and Black British performers and creative producers, this book reinstates the work of hundreds of practitioners by focusing on a close reading of twelve key figures who made musicals theatre in the UK. From Mabel Mercer, Johnny Nit, Pip Graham and Gordon Stretton to Frank Weaver, Alberta Hunter, and Clarence "Buddy" Bradley, it shows how Black composers, musicians, performers and choreographers with a variety of heritages and national identities played a central role in reshaping the form from Edwardian musical comedy into the age of modernism and beyond. Many of their names or works are not included in histories of the British musical. This book exposes this inconvenient history.
